Russia Tries To Assassinate Ukraine's SBU Chief With Unprecedented Drone Attack On Kyiv HQ

The Kremlin has long previewed that its next escalation step against Ukraine would be to start attacking 'decision-making centers', or headquarters and government buildings. That moment has clearly begun and is now in an active phase, also as strikes ramp up on the key southern port of Odesa, as well as on Ukraine-linked cargo and other shipping. On Friday a Russian drone slammed into the headquarters of Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) in central Kyiv.

The SBU is the country's top domestic security and intelligence service - somewhat akin to the FBI in America. It primarily oversees counterintelligence, counterterrorism, espionage investigations, as well as engages in some law-enforcement functions, especially concerning top level crime including among government officials. It has been the mastermind behind multiple high-level deadly and destructive attacks on Russia.

President Zelensky soon after the attack announced and confirmed that the SBU's central building on Volodymyrska Street, in the heart of iconic downtown near St. Sophia Cathedral, was struck. Flames and smoke have been seen billowing high over the high-secure central district.

"I spoke with the Head of the Security Service of Ukraine, Oleksandr Poklad. Unfortunately, a Russian drone struck the central building of the Security Service of Ukraine on Volodymyrska Street in Kyiv, across from St. Sophia Cathedral," Zelensky said.

"The drone was aimed directly at the office of the Head of the Security Service in that building," he added. Zelensky has ordered his military to mount a "tangible response and, where possible, one that mirrors this strike, to the Russians once everything is ready. Our military will support this response."

If accurate, this sends an alarming and resounding message - that not only is Moscow now willing to directly target top headquarters buildings, but that it's ready to assassinate intelligence directors.

Elderly outnumber young children for first time in history – census

The demographic reversal is putting growing pressure on pension and healthcare systems, particularly in Europe

The world’s elderly population has overtaken the number of young children for the first time in human history, according to a new US Census Bureau report. Europe, already the world’s oldest region, is at the forefront of the trend.

People aged 65 and over accounted for 10.5% of the global population in 2025, surpassing children aged five and younger for the first time, the bureau said in its An Aging World: 2025 report.

The reversal has been driven by longer life expectancy and falling birth rates. The Census Bureau said sustained fertility below replacement level can create a “fertility trap,” as the number of potential parents eventually declines.

Around 132 million babies are now born worldwide each year, down from a peak of roughly 142 million in the early 2010s, according to UN data. Africa accounted for roughly 47 million births in 2024, reflecting an increasingly uneven global trend.

The decline has been particularly pronounced in Europe. Just 3.55 million babies were born in the EU in 2024, nearly half the 6.8 million recorded in 1964. The bloc’s fertility rate has fallen to a record low of 1.34 children per woman.

The demographic shift is set to accelerate. The global population is expected to grow by more than 2 billion by 2060, while the number of people aged 65 and over will rise by around 1.15 billion, according to the US Census Bureau.

The elderly are projected to account for 19.6% of humanity by then, up from 10.5% today. In Europe, their share is expected to rise from 21% to nearly 31%, the report said.

The shift will put further strain on government budgets as fewer workers and taxpayers support a growing number of retirees. The Census report estimates that across Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries, increased government healthcare spending over the next decade will amount to 2.6% of GDP, twice the projected 1.3% growth in revenues.

At the same time, European governments are ramping up military spending as they cite the perceived threat from Russia. EU defense expenditure is projected to reach €454 billion this year, up around 75% since 2021.

The OECD warned in June that higher military spending would force governments to make “tough choices” over spending priorities, particularly in heavily indebted countries such as Belgium, France, Italy, and the UK. It said larger defense budgets would compound existing pressures from growing pension and healthcare costs.

The competing demands are already shaping European politics. Belgium has tightened pension and welfare rules, while Germany is taking on more debt to fund its military buildup and France is constraining non-defense spending.

In Britain, the Conservatives this week proposed welfare cuts to fund an additional £10 billion ($13.5 billion) in annual military spending, including reductions in housing support and the restoration of a cap on child benefits.

Diesel Prices Now Higher Than They Were Under Biden

Diesel just hit a four-year high, and it barely made the news.

The national average is back above $5.60 a gallon, up roughly $2 from a year ago, as the Iran war and hits on Russian refineries choke global supply. Gasoline gets the headlines at $4. Diesel runs the economy.

Diesel prices in the U.S. climbed to a record high Friday as the war in Iran and disruptions to global refining capacity tightened fuel supplies.

The national average for diesel reached $5.85 per gallon Friday, according to AAA, surpassing the previous national record set in 2022 during the global energy crunch that followed Russia’s invasion of Ukraine during the presidency of Joe Biden. The national average for diesel prices was $3.72 in February, the month the Iran war began, per the Bureau of Transportation Statistics.

The average US diesel price climbed above $5 per gallon in spring 2022 — following the escalation of the Ukraine war — and reached a peak of roughly $5.81 per gallon during the week of June 20, 2022, according to Energy Information Administration (EIA) data. Still, this was four cents lower than the new high recorded under the second Trump administration.

Gasoline prices have also increased sharply, with the national average reaching roughly $4.15 per gallon Friday, according to the American Automobile Association (AAA). The increase in diesel has coincided with elevated crude oil prices. Brent crude, the international oil benchmark, traded around $96 per barrel Friday as disruptions to global energy supplies continued to pressure markets, according to the AAA.

Most products consumed in the U.S. are transported by trucks and trains with diesel engines, while diesel also powers most farming and construction equipment, according to The U.S. Energy Information Administration. Higher diesel prices can therefore raise the cost of transporting goods and operating businesses.

DHS Hands Election File to Justice Department

Mullin asks Blanche to review barcode ballots, ERIC’s access to driver records, and more than 42,000 deceased names on Georgia’s rolls

The Department of Homeland Security has formally put election-system vulnerabilities, private voter-data access, and a major Georgia voter-roll finding before the Department of Justice.

In a signed Sept. 2 letter, DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin asked Attorney General Todd Blanche to review prior DHS referrals involving barcode and QR-code voting systems, the Electronic Registration Information Center, and the Center for Election Innovation and Research.

This is not a social-media rumor. It is a DHS secretary asking the attorney general to decide whether election systems and private access to government records comply with federal law.

DHS Questions Barcode Ballots Under HAVA

Mullin asked DOJ whether systems that count votes encoded in barcodes or QR codes satisfy the Help America Vote Act. The law requires voting systems used in federal elections to produce a permanent paper record with manual-audit capacity and make that record available for recounts, under 52 U.S.C. § 21081.

The letter states DHS identified systems that can separate the programming of the barcode from the human-readable text on the printed ballot. That configuration can leave auditors with a paper record that fails to reflect the machine-counted vote.

Mullin’s letter cites a released CISA Election Report examining ImageCast X ballot-marking devices.

ERIC, CEIR, and Georgia’s Voter Rolls Go to DOJ

DHS also asked DOJ to review whether states unlawfully shared motor-vehicle and voter-registration data with private nonprofits. The referral identifies ERIC and CEIR and raises potential violations of the Driver’s Privacy Protection Act.

Mullin wrote that ERIC’s model contract requires member states to transmit motor-vehicle licensing and identification records at least every 60 days. He said the data can include Social Security and driver’s-license numbers, then questioned whether ERIC’s use and sharing of that information fits federal privacy-law exceptions.

The letter states Georgia has sent protected data to ERIC since 2019. It also states that when Georgia ran its voter file through the federal SAVE system in 2026, USCIS analysts identified more than 42,000 deceased registrants on the state’s rolls.

Mullin placed those referrals directly before Blanche. The ballot-code question, the ERIC data trail, and Georgia’s 42,000-name finding now sit in DOJ’s file.

Hasidic rabbis meeting with US President Donald Trump in the Oval Office on Thursday reportedly urged him to intervene on behalf of ultra-Orthodox yeshiva students in Israel seeking to evade military service.

A letter was also crafted on behalf of rabbis from the anti-Zionist Satmar sect who participated in the meeting with a list of specific requests from Trump on the issue, but the initiative was blocked at the last minute, according to Hebrew media reports.

“The regime is now faltering. It is weaker than ever. It is fighting for its survival,” Netanyahu said during a Rosh Hashanah toast with the IDF General Staff Forum in Tel Aviv, crediting Israel’s military operations since the Hamas-led October 7, 2023, atrocities with ebbing the Iranian threat.

“I am confident in our ability to remove this threat once and for all – in other words, to topple this regime,” Netanyahu said. “That is the central mission that still lies ahead of us, but it is close. It is not impossible. It is within reach.”

“It is no coincidence that they are not attacking us. They are attacking everyone except us. They know our strength, the force of our blows and our determination,” he added.

In a warning to Israel’s enemies, Netanyahu said, “Don’t mess with us. If you have learned anything, don’t mess with us. We have the strength, the determination and the internal unity to defeat you.”

Netanyahu’s remarks came after Defense Minister Israel Katz warned earlier in the day that if Iran attacks Israel, the military will target all of the regime’s infrastructure, “including energy infrastructure.” Katz was responding to a Reuters report that Iran warned the United States it would respond forcefully to any Israeli offensive in southern Lebanon’s Ali Taher Ridge, under which is a “strategic” underground Hezbollah facility that the Israel Defense Forces said Thursday had been cleared out ahead of its demolition.

Almost half of Israelis, particularly those aligned with parties that form Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's coalition, believe that there was a "betrayal from within" conspiracy around the morning of October 7, 2023, a poll published by Maariv on Friday found.

Out of the respondents, a slight plurality, at 44%, believed that there was no "betrayal from within," while 40% believed such an event did occur, and 16% said they were unsure.

The poll also broke down these results by political affiliation, with 61% of coalition voters believing there was an "betrayal from within," while 64% of opposition voters believed there was no such event.

‘You are standing today’: A Jewish lesson for America, 25 years after 9/11

As we approach the 25th anniversary of that terrible day, this week’s haftarah (Isaiah 61:10-63:9) offers a powerful perspective on destruction, rebuilding, and memory.

Twenty-five years ago next week, America and the world awoke to a morning that would forever divide time into before and after.

On September 11, 2001, Islamic terrorists hijacked four passenger planes and turned them into weapons. One plane struck the Pentagon, while aboard United Flight 93, passengers and crew fought back against the hijackers before the aircraft crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Nearly 3,000 innocent people were murdered in New York, Washington, and Pennsylvania. The Twin Towers collapsed, smoke rose over Manhattan, and Americans suddenly realized that oceans were no protection against those determined to destroy them.

As we approach the 25th anniversary of that terrible day, this week’s haftarah (Isaiah 61:10-63:9) offers a powerful perspective on destruction, rebuilding, and memory.

Destruction, rebuilding, and memory

The prophet Isaiah declares: “For Zion’s sake I will not be silent, and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not be still, until her righteousness goes forth like brightness, and her salvation like a burning torch” (Isaiah 62:1).

Isaiah is speaking, of course, about Zion and Jerusalem. His prophecy is directed to the Jewish people and describes the future restoration of the Jewish capital.

But the ideas he raises – refusing to be silenced and rebuilding after devastation – speak beyond the immediate context of the prophecy.

That is especially true as America prepares to commemorate September 11.

Throughout the haftarah, Isaiah speaks of Jerusalem’s transformation from desolation to renewal. The city that had been abandoned and devastated will rise again. “You shall be a glorious crown in the hand of the Lord,” he declares (62:3), and it will no longer be called “forsaken” or its land “desolate” (62:4).

Anyone who remembers lower Manhattan in the weeks after September 11 can appreciate the power of those images.

Ground Zero was a smoking ruin. Thousands of families had been shattered. One of the most recognizable parts of the New York skyline had disappeared in a matter of hours.

Yet New York rebuilt.

The terrorists succeeded in murdering thousands of innocent people, but they failed in their larger goal. They did not destroy America or bring it to its knees.

The verse’s opening words contain another important idea: “For Zion’s sake I will not be silent.”

Twenty-five years is a long time.

An entire generation of Americans has now grown up with no personal recollection of September 11. They did not watch the towers burn nor see people covered in ash fleeing through lower Manhattan. They did not watch firefighters and police officers rush into buildings from which everyone else was desperately trying to escape.

For those of us who lived through that day, the images remain difficult to forget. But for millions of younger Americans, September 11 is already history. Which makes it all the more important to tell the story clearly.

This week’s parasha adds a related dimension.

The Zionist Attention Corral

For valid reasons, Americans are becoming increasingly aware of the corruption of their government by Zionists and the Zionist lobby.

The concern that their government does not represent them, but rather the Zionist element within both the US and the Israeli governments, is squarely based upon evidence and, for the overwhelming part, is not born of antisemitism.

Zionism is a racist nationalist political movement, not a religious movement. It is purely for political reasons that the World Jewish Congress (WJC) declares Zionism to be synonymous with Judaism. It is this baseless claim that supposedly justifies accusing anyone who opposes Zionism of being antisemitic.

The idea that Zionism is a core feature of Jewish identity is nonsense. Many Jews resoundingly reject Zionism. Anti-Zionism is not, by any definition, a form of antisemitism. Regardless of the WJC’s groundless assertions.

Illustrating the absurdity of maintaining that Zionism and Jewish identity are synonymous, the WJC openly concedes that Zionism’s primary objective was defined at the First Zionist Congress, or Basel Congress, in 1869.

That objective is:

To secure for the Jewish people a publicly recognized, legally assured homeland in Palestine.

The creation and expansion of a Jewish nation state “in Palestine” is an overtly ethno-nationalist political ambition.

Underlining the separation between the Zionist state project, Judaism, and the Jewish people, the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s (IHRA’s) working definition of antisemitism clearly determines that “holding Jews collectively responsible for actions of the state of Israel” is antisemitic. Reciprocally, therefore, claiming that the state of Israel embodies the will of Jews is equally antisemitic, according to the IHRA definition.

In the UK—from the legal perspective—anti-Zionism is definitely not antisemitism. Professor David Miller has won his employment tribunal and defeated the subsequent appeal by his employer. Miller’s tribunal finding has established in UK law that anti-Zionism is a protected philisophical belief for the purposes of the 2010 Equality Act.

There are, of course, antisemitic anti-Zionists, but anti-Zionism is not antisemitic. Opposition to the political ideology of Zionism and revulsion at the horrors inflicted by the Israeli state and its international partners in pursuit of the political ideology of Zionism is not to blame all Jews.

For example, the Israeli state, heavily influenced by Zionism, has committed genocide against the Palestinians in Gaza. This observation does not imply that Jews, as a whole people, are collectively responsible for this abhorrent war crime.

From a rational perspective, genocide is obviously incomprehensible. To perpetrate a genocide, even if ordered, requires a deeply unfathomable, heinous malevolence. Burning children alive in their beds, blowing infants’ brains out, sniping pregnant women (and their unborn children), beating the elderly to death with rifle butts, and using anal rape as part of your torture regimen—then writing songs about your exploits and celebrating your depravity as if it were a virtue—are not the actions of morally defensible human beings: Jewish or otherwise.

As discussed in my recent piece for Unlimited Hangout, aside from the obscene brutality—recorded, filmed, and shown around the world—just from a statistical or even an official report perspective, the Israeli government’s genocide of the Palestinians in Gaza is blatantly obvious.

That’s a lot of money keeping us safe, yet the government learnt that Chinese businessman Wang Yongxin, president of the Shanghai Xinyang Chamber of Commerce, had bought significant blocks of land next to a prospective submarine base site at Port Kembla and Newcastle Port after reading about it in the newspaper.

Neither confirm nor deny

When MWM used Freedom of Information laws to find out what went on at the Foreign Investment Review Board in relation to the foreign purchase of land next to prospective submarine bases, Treasury refused to say anything about what had been going on behind the scenes.

They hit us with a big fat “neither confirm nor deny” any documents exist.

Only after a fight in the Administrative Review Tribunal has Treasury relented and handed over some documents, revealing it wasn’t because of national security or law enforcement; rather, it seems because of embarrassment.

On 18 July last year, journalist Jack Quail at The Australian published an article with the headline “AUKUS port purchase alarm: fears of Chinese Communist Party links”.

By 2:30 PM on the same day, Chris Tinning, the First Assistant Secretary of the Foreign Investment Division in Treasury, sent an email to Sheridan Kearnan, First Assistant Secretary, Strategic Policy, at the Department of Defence.
