The Dönmeh are a group of crypto-Jews in the Ottoman Empire and modern Turkey who outwardly converted to Islam in the late 17th century but secretly retained their Sabbatean Jewish faith and Kabbalistic beliefs.
Originating as followers of the self-proclaimed Messiah Shabbetai Zevi, the community was centered in Thessalonika (Salonica) and divided into several subsects, including the İzmirli, Yakubi, and Karakashi. They practiced strict endogamy and maintained their secretive religious rituals for centuries, eventually becoming prominent in the Young Turk movement and the founding of the Turkish Republic.
Following the 1923 population exchange between Greece and Turkey, the Dönmeh were classified as Muslims and relocated primarily to Istanbul and İzmir. While many have since assimilated into Turkish society, the community historically preserved elements of both Muslim and Jewish traditions, such as observing Ramadan while keeping Shabbat.
