I actually went through the first three of those books in the 90's after the first movie came out. I remember being uncomfortable reading through the subtle homoerotic parts. I still think del Toro and Hogan has had the best spin on vampires since Stoker.
It was the opposite for me, no problem with the movies. But yeah, I've always been more into stories where vampires are monsters to be wary of and destroyed rather than misunderstood undead to be romanticized and related to.
