Pluto in Enhanced Color
Pluto is more colorful than we can see. Color data and high-resolution images of our Solar System's most famous dwarf planet, taken by the robotic New Horizons spacecraft during its flyby in 2015 July, have been digitally combined to give an enhanced-color view of this ancient world sporting an unexpectedly young surface. The featured enhanced color image is not only esthetically pretty but scientifically useful, making surface regions of differing chemical composition visually distinct. For example, the light-colored heart-shaped Tombaugh Regio on the lower right is clearly shown here to be divisible into two regions that are geologically different, with the leftmost lobe, Sputnik Planitia, also appearing unusually smooth. After Pluto, New Horizons continued on, shooting past asteroid Arrokoth in 2019 with enough speed to escape our Solar System completely.

Small asteroid impact today near Australia
The Mount Lemmon Observatory survey has spotted a new asteroid, less than 1 meter across (less than 3 feet across) that’s headed for Earth.
The impact should happen in Earth’s atmosphere near northwest Australia at 16:07 UTC (11:07 a.m. CDT). At that time near Australia the skies should be dark, so people in the area could see a bright flash of the incoming meteor.
At the moment, the asteroid has the name CERNQ52.
This is the 13th time we’ve discovered an asteroid before impact.
Richard Moissl, the Head of Planetary Defense for ESA, wrote on social media:
INCOMING! Our systems have calculated an atmospheric entry in the timeframe between 16:00-16:30 UTC of a harmless object discovered by Mt Lemmon survey with a diameter of ~0.8 m northwest of Australia over the ocean.
The impact will likely cause a bright meteor.
Adrien Coffinet, a member of the Minor Planet Mailing List, wrote:
If I’m not wrong, this will be the first Aten asteroid (a < 1 AU) detected in space before impact. All the previous impactors detected in space before impact were Apollo asteroids (a 1 AU).
Aten asteroids are those that have an orbit inside Earth’s, so under 1 astronomical unit (AU). Apollo asteroids are those that are farther from the sun than Earth on average.
Report the meteor if you see it

Bottom line: A small asteroid impact will occur in the next few hours near northwest Australia. The meteor should harmlessly burn up in Earth’s atmosphere and poses no danger.

Witnessing 9/11 from space - ‘We’re not having a very good day here on Earth, Frank’

When terrorists attacked the United States on Sept. 11, 2001, Holly Hill High School graduate Frank Lee Culbertson Jr. was aboard the International Space Station — the only American off Earth.
Twenty-five years later, the retired astronaut reflects on witnessing the tragedy from orbit and how that day shaped his life.
Culbertson, then 52, was about 30 days into a four-month mission as commander of Expedition 3.
He and Russian cosmonauts Mikhail Tyurin and Vladimir Dezhurov had traveled to the space station aboard the space shuttle Discovery on NASA’s STS-105 mission.
Watching tragedy from orbit
Culbertson learned about the attacks when he called flight surgeon Stephen Hart to report the results of 30-day physical exams for himself and his two crewmates, flight engineers Tyurin and Dezhurov.
“Hey, Steve, how’s it going?” Culbertson asked. “Well, we’re not having a very good day here on Earth, Frank,” Hart replied.
Hart told him that two planes had crashed into the World Trade Center towers. “As he’s describing it, it sounds horrible but unreal,” Culbertson said.
The circumstances were made more surreal by what Culbertson had been reading.
“Coincidentally, I was actually halfway through a Tom Clancy novel, ‘The Sum of All Fears,’ which has terrorist attacks,” he said. “I felt like I was back in the novel for a minute.”
As Hart recounted the attacks, Tyurin and Dezhurov overheard the conversation and began listening.
Hart told Culbertson about the attack on the Pentagon. Then came more news.
“Well, it looks like we just lost another airplane in Pennsylvania,” Hart said.
Culbertson looked at a world map that he and his crewmates kept displayed on a computer.
“I realized as we were coming across Canada, we were going to be over New England in a couple of minutes,” he said.
Culbertson raced to find a video camera and a window facing in the right direction.
“From over Maine, I could zoom in on Manhattan,” he said. “It was easy to spot because you could see the big trail of black smoke going out over Long Island Sound and over the Atlantic Ocean.
And as I zoomed in, this big, basically gray cloud enveloped Manhattan.”
He later learned that the cloud was caused by the collapse of the second World Trade Center tower.
“To me, it was horrifying, of course,” Culbertson said. “I just assumed many thousands of people were dying.”
He tried to find words appropriate for the moment.
“You don’t really know what to say in a time like that,” he said.
Culbertson recalled saying, “I hope we bring the people to justice who did this.”
Communications with Earth were limited that day. Security concerns also disrupted Mission Control operations, Culbertson said.
He was able to arrange a call with his family to confirm that everyone was safe, although communication remained intermittent.
“I talked to them whenever I had the opportunity to make sure they were getting through this fine,” he said.
Trumpeting ‘Taps’ from space
On Sept. 12, Culbertson learned that a friend and fellow U.S. Naval Academy classmate had been killed when hijacked American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon the previous day.
Charles Frank “Chic” Burlingame III, 51, was the flight’s captain.
Burlingame had been helping plan a 30-year reunion for their Naval Academy class. He and Culbertson had played trumpet together at the academy, including in a band.
“We trained together in F-4 Phantoms and knew each other well,” Culbertson said.

Unable to attend the reunion because he was in space, Culbertson already had planned to send his classmates a message from orbit.
He had taken a trumpet aboard the space station as a personal entertainment item. On the day of the reunion, Culbertson played “Taps” in honor of Burlingame and all those killed in the Sept. 11 attacks.
“I felt ‘Taps’ was appropriate because Chic and I both had played the trumpet,” Culbertson said. “It was a small thing I could do to remember the people who died.”
A friend working in Mission Control recorded Culbertson’s performance aboard the space station. The video was sent to his classmates and shown at a football game during the reunion.
25 years later: ‘Still vulnerable’
A quarter-century after the attacks, Culbertson, now 77, said the United States remains at risk.
“We’ve done a lot of things to prevent something like that happening again, but we are still vulnerable,” he said.
“The world is still a dangerous place, and there’s still a lot of people that don’t agree with us or want to take what we have or harm us,” he said. “A lot of people who are just mean.
“I think it’s important that we continue to work hard to foster peace in the world and try to reduce conflicts — not increase them.”
Culbertson also believes Americans must preserve the principles on which the nation was founded.
“I think it’s important that we maintain our own values of democracy, freedom, liberty and personal choice the way we have for 250 years,” he said.
He encouraged people to learn more about other cultures and systems of government.
“I think it’s also important that people educate themselves on why there are differences between societies and between governments and work to reduce those differences, not increase them,” he said.
‘Never gave up’
By age 11, Culbertson knew he wanted to become a pilot — but not just any pilot. He was drawn to fast planes, especially those that broke the sound barrier.
Two years later, America’s young space program expanded his ambitions.
“That’s higher, faster and further. And why not?” he recalled thinking as a teenager.
Culbertson began setting his sights on space. He read everything he could about astronauts and flying, followed the paths they had taken and worked to earn an appointment to the Naval Academy.
As a student, he paid particular attention to science and math. He credits teachers in Fairfield County public schools and at Holly Hill High School, where he spent his final two years of high school, with helping build his foundation.
While attending Holly Hill, Culbertson heard a talk by fellow South Carolinian Charles “Charlie” Bolden, then a Naval Academy midshipman. Bolden later became an astronaut and NASA administrator.
“He, even before integration, came to Holly Hill and spoke at our high school,” Culbertson said.
“He and I have been friends ever since.”
When Culbertson entered the Naval Academy as a freshman, Bolden was a senior.
“He looked out for me,” Culbertson said.
Their mothers also became close friends. Culbertson said he planned to attend Bolden’s 80th birthday celebration soon.
Reaching his goals required persistence. It took Culbertson four attempts to enter test pilot school and two attempts to secure an interview with NASA.
“But I was just determined,” he said.
Culbertson credits his family, friends and teachers with helping him along the way. He is especially grateful to his late parents, Dr. Frank and Carolina Culbertson.
“My sisters believed in my dreams, too,” he said, naming Jane, Sallie, Carolina and Amy.
His advice to students is simple.
“I never gave up,” Culbertson said. “Don’t take ‘no’ as the final answer.”
He plans to visit South Carolina more often to speak with students — encouraging them to reach for the stars, too.

Grateful to @POTUS for establishing the commission for the United States Space Academy.
We are entering an incredible Golden Age as space becomes rapidly more accessible and increasingly necessary for commerce, science, national security, and, of course, exploration and discovery.
The means are quickly becoming available to build humanity’s first outpost on the Moon, expand our reach into the outer solar system under nuclear power, and use telescopes like Roman to reveal tens of thousands of worlds across other star systems.
And these capabilities will accelerate in the years ahead as advances in AI, quantum technologies, additive manufacturing, and robotics unleash possibilities once barely imaginable.
We should be building the talent pipeline now for the extraordinary future ahead.
Just as the importance of a Space Force became increasingly clear as the domain evolved, we should be equally forward-looking about developing the scientists, engineers, technicians, operators, pilots, and astronauts who will lead this next great era.
I have no doubt many will make their way through the United States Space Academy, ready to take on some of the most consequential and exciting challenges of their generation.

Isar Aerospace achieves first launch to orbit from continental Europe

In brief
Today German company Isar Aerospace successfully reached orbit with their Spectrum launcher, lifting off from Andøya Spaceport in Norway.

At 21:12 BST/22:12 CEST Isar Aerospace’s two-stage launch vehicle soared from the launch pad.
Spectrum is 28 m tall, 2 m in diameter and, with its ten engines, it is targeting to launch payloads of up to 1000 kg to low Earth orbit.
“A historic launch from Andøya Spaceport in Norway today, the first European Launcher Challenger to reach orbit” said ESA’s Director General Josef Aschbacher, “Spectrum quite literally rose to the challenge and delivered its payloads in low Earth orbit.
An astounding achievement by German company Isar Aerospace, founded only eight years ago, and backed by the European Space Agency.
This is yet another step towards a more diverse autonomous European launch service sector, and I am excited for what is still to come!”
This launch follows the rocket’s first test flight, that flew for 30 seconds, clearing the launch pad and proved Spectrum can achieve one of the hardest parts of space transportation: liftoff.
Unlike the test flight in 2025, for this second Spectrum launch Isar Aerospace has included six commercial and educational CubeSats and an experiment that aims to prove new technologies in orbit as well as providing educational experiences for students in Europe.
The mission ‘Onward and Upward’ is supported by ESA’s Boost! program. Isar Aerospace also won the first Microlauncher Competition awarded by the German Space Agency at DLR, which resulted in the selection of the payloads on this flight.
Initially supported by ESA’s Business Incubation Centre, Isar Aerospace has received several rounds of co-funding as part of the European Space Agency’s Boost! programme that helps commercial initiatives offering space transportation services.
Under Boost! contract, ESA supported the development of the Spectrum launch service, including this second Spectrum flight .
In 2025 Isar Aerospace was one of the launch service operators selected for the European Launcher Challenge, and their contract was signed recently.
As a first important milestone, the European Launcher Challenge requires launch service providers to achieve an orbital launch no later than 2027.
This flight has demonstrated the Spectrum launch system successfully, making Isar Aerospace the first provider to reach this milestone for the European Launcher Challenge.
“All launches are special, but what Isar Aerospace achieved today is historic: the first European company to reach orbit with their own launch vehicle” said Géraldine Naja, ESA’s Director of Space Transportation, “a huge congratulation to the teams involved, who with this launch also complete the first milestone of ESA’s European Launcher Challenge, looking forward to seeing many more European launches, including from Andøya Spaceport in Norway in the near future.”

Kremlin sees ‘atmosphere of trust’ in Putin’s talks with Witkoff and Kushner

Following the negotiations with the Russian president, Trump’s envoys departed for Kiev for a meeting with Ukrainian officials
The talks that Russian President Vladimir Putin had with US President Donald Trump’s envoys on Saturday are indicative of an “atmosphere of trust” between Moscow and Washington, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said.
Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner have arrived in Kiev, where they are meeting with the Ukrainian leadership as part of US efforts to mediate a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine.
Speaking to Russian journalist Pavel Zarubin on Sunday, Peskov stated that “there is indeed an atmosphere of trust, at least with respect to this communication channel, [and] it is growing stronger.”
The official added that the “exchange of such greetings [between the Russian president and foreign dignitaries] is extended… when there are messages that the head of state deems necessary to convey.”
Commenting on Saturday’s negotiations between Putin and Witkoff and Kushner, which lasted over three hours and included formal discussions as well as an informal exchange over lunch, Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov told reporters that the “conversation was substantive, constructive, extremely candid and trusting.”
According to the Russian official, the US negotiators presented a “number of considerations regarding possible paths toward a settlement” of the Ukraine conflict.
Ushakov revealed that the Russian president and Trump’s envoys had also discussed economic cooperation and potential “major, mutually beneficial Russian-American projects.”
He characterized the talks as “timely and very useful for both sides,” with Putin and Trump intending to continue personal contacts as well as the diplomatic work being conducted by Witkoff and Kushner.
The Russian president earlier praised his US counterpart for his sustained efforts to end the hostilities between Moscow and Kiev.
Ahead of the US negotiators’ departure for Kiev, Putin ordered a three-day hiatus in strikes on the Ukrainian capital to allow Witkoff and Kushner to safely carry out their mission.

Ukraine Destroys Russian Ka-52 and Mi-28 Attack Helicopters in Drone Strike on Sochi Airport

Ukrainian forces destroyed two Russian attack helicopters—a Ka-52 and a Mi-28—and damaged a Mi-8-family multipurpose helicopter during a drone strike on Sochi International Airport in southern Russia.
Satellite imagery published by the open-source Telegram channel “Absolutely Reliable Source” shows damage to the three helicopters following the September 4 attack.
The strike targeted several facilities around Sochi Airport and the nearby Adler area, including aviation fuel infrastructure and Russian air defense positions.
At the BATO fuel depot near the airport, Ukrainian drones destroyed six storage tanks—two RVS-2000 tanks and four RVS-1000 tanks.
The facility handles the reception, storage, quality control, and fueling of aviation fuel for airports in Russia’s Krasnodar region.
A nearby Lukoil oil depot was also hit, with three RVS-400 storage tanks destroyed or damaged, according to satellite imagery.
The same operation also struck a Russian S-300 or S-400 surface-to-air missile system near Sochi, causing the detonation of one of its launchers.
Earlier, on March 20, a Ukrainian FPV drone shot down a Russian Ka-52 attack helicopter near Pokrovsk. The aircraft, estimated to cost around $16 million, was targeted by operators of Ukraine’s 59th Separate Assault Brigade of Unmanned Systems.

'The end of the Iranian regime is near,' Netanyahu claims at government's Rosh Hashanah toast
"We are determined to defend ourselves; we are determined to strike our enemies," Netanyahu said at the Government Rosh Hashanah toast.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday that "the end of the Iranian regime is near," and that its fall would "change the fate of the Middle East and the Jewish people."
Netanyahu also implied that Israel is continuing operations against Iran in order to achieve the fall of the regime, saying that he is "determined to do this."
The prime minister spoke at a Government toast in advance of Rosh Hashanah, where he said that Israel is the strongest it has ever been, while its enemies are weaker than ever.
"Together with the United States, we accomplished tremendous achievements in removing an existential threat from above us. We have removed atomic bombs and ballistic missiles from above us and have hit the Iranian axis with great force," Netanyahu pointed out.

Israeli strike kills two people in Gaza, Hamas officials claim
An Israeli strike allegedly killed two Palestinians in the Gaza Strip on Sunday, officials from the Hamas-run Health Ministry claimed.
The airstrike occured in western Gaza City, an official from Gaza's al-Shifa Hospital claimed.

Lebanon can sign Abraham Accords once Hezbollah is disarmed, Sunni MP says
“I don't see any reason why we cannot sign peace with Israel,” Makhzoumi said, adding that it was possible for Lebanon to “achieve” membership in the Abraham Accords.
Lebanon can join the Abraham Accords once Hezbollah is disarmed and can no longer use the country as a “launching pad” for attacks against Israel, Lebanese Sunni MP Fouad Makhzoumi told Middle East 24 last week.
Makhzoumi, who has previously urged the Lebanese military to demonstrate its willingness to confront Hezbollah’s arms trafficking by establishing a checkpoint in Beirut’s Dahieh neighborhood, said diplomatic relations and trade with Israel would be possible once “our side, as Lebanese, disarms the militias.”
As it stands, he said, Lebanon has a border that is outside the state’s control, allowing arms to be smuggled into and out of the country.

IDF, Shin Bet dismantle Hamas terror cell, weapons cache during West Bank counterterrorism op.
A Hamas terror cell operating in the West Bank area of Akraba near Nablus was dismantled during a multi-agency counterterrorism operation, the IDF and Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) announced in a joint statement on Sunday.
Working alongside Israel Police's Counterterrorism Unit (YAMAM), the IDF and Shin Bet arrested ten terrorists working to advance terror attacks against Israeli civilians.
In addition, the security forces located and dismantled a rocket found in the area, without a launcher.
During questioning, one of the terrorists revealed the location of a weapons cache, containing an M16 rifle and a large quantity of explosives. These were also dismantled immediately.

Fatah Central Committee secretary-general reveals Hamas talks in Turkey, doubts elections - report
Jibril Rajoub met with Hamas leaders Khalil al-Hayya and Zaher Jabarin in Turkey two weeks ago, the secretary-general of the Fatah Central Committee confirmed to the Hamas-affiliated Quds News Network on Friday.
According to a source who spoke with the Palestinian Press Network, Rajoub also met with mukhtars, or clan leaders, from the Gaza Strip in an effort to potentially create his own alliance ahead of the election.
Rajoub told Quds that he doubted the Palestinian Legislative Council elections scheduled for November would go ahead, though he called for a meeting of all Palestinian factions to develop a roadmap for national dialogue and reform with Egyptian support.

Why Hezbollah trusts in a 'Maginot Line' defense at Ali al-Taher ridge - analysis
In the end, the Hezbollah Maginot Line fell in southern Lebanon. It has taken many years to uproot the infrastructure that was built over the last decades.
Hezbollah lost another key stronghold in Lebanon recently. The Israel Defense Forces said on September 3 that they had cleared the Ali al-Taher ridge.
The 36th Division had “operated in recent weeks to clear and neutralize the two underground routes in the Ali al-Taher Ridge area in the Security Zone. The soldiers achieved operational control of the ridge area, both above and below ground, and cleared the area of terrorists. Some of the terrorists were eliminated, while others fled the area.”
The IDF said that the operation was ongoing. “Upon completion of the operation, the IDF will adjust its defensive posture in accordance with the situational assessment…Following operations in the underground routes over the past several weeks, their capability to carry out terror attacks against Israeli civilians and IDF soldiers from within the routes has been neutralized.”

Al-Natour aims for a meeting with President Trump, says Gazan civil society is not Hamas, wants a political role, and calls for schoolbook reform to counter radicalization.
The path out of Gaza began, Moumen Al-Natour said, with men at his door. In July 2025, he said Hamas operatives came to his house in Gaza City’s al-Shati refugee camp and ordered him to go to Shifa Hospital for questioning by Hamas’ internal security service. Al-Natour refused. He managed to escape, leaving behind Hamas operatives who demanded to know: “Where is Moumen?”
The men who came for him, he said, did not come only for him. “They threatened my family, all of my members in my family, my mother, my sisters, my brothers,” Al-Natour said. He fled to another location, moving through Khan Yunis and Al-Mawasi in search of a way out.
What happened next would take him through a militia-controlled area, into contact with international advocates and, eventually, to Italy–physically safe, but far from the city, family and future he still calls his own.
The Media Line previously spoke with Al-Natour in April 2025, when he was trapped in Gaza. His account is not simply the story of a man who escaped danger. It is the argument of a Gazan lawyer, human rights advocate, and founder of the We Want to Live movement who believes Gaza must be separated from Hamas if either Gazans or Israelis are to have a future beyond recurring war. The foundation of every proposal he advances, every warning he issues, and every appeal he makes to world leaders: “Gaza is not Hamas. And Hamas is not Gaza,” he said.

Mysterious disappearances linked to UFO research

In the past, many reports of unexplained phenomena were classified. Now they are being openly published by the Pentagon.
At the same time, something completely different is happening under the radar – about ten people with insight into top-secret space research have disappeared.
The Wright-Patterson Air Base in Ohio is one of the most publicized in the United States.
Mostly for the persistent rumor that the US Air Force is said to have used the base to study the remains of both alien craft and aliens from the alleged UFO incident outside Roswell in 1947.
The article in brief
Several researchers and military personnel linked to UFO research have disappeared without a trace or died under mysterious circumstances.
The FBI and the White House are investigating possible threats to national security.
Swedish researchers are worried about all the disappearances.
General Neil McCasland was head of research there before his retirement, placed in a sky-high security class.
Since February, he has disappeared without a trace. He is just one of many.
"It's scary when people start to disappear"
Another example is Melissa Casias, who has worked at a facility that deals with nuclear weapons research.
Recently, she was found dead after disappearing under strange circumstances. Police sources from the investigation into the disappearance tell the Daily Mail that "there is no chance it was suicide".
It is known that at least a dozen researchers or military personnel with insight into top-secret research have disappeared in recent years alone.
And for the Swedish researcher Beatriz Villarroel, concern is growing.
"It's scary when people start to disappear. Or maybe they will be murdered, or, in quotation marks: "commit suicide", she says, and hesitates for a moment before continuing: "I don't know. There are quite a few now.
The mysterious disappearances and deaths of her American colleagues are being investigated by the FBI, to find out if there is anything suspicious behind it.
Researching unexplained light phenomena
Beatriz Villarroel is an astronomer at Nordita and has been recognized for her research on unexplained phenomena.
At the end of last year, she and her colleagues published two reports analysing the night sky, where light-reflecting dots appear to be moving in orbit around the Earth.
It is noteworthy that many examples are from long before we humans launched our first satellite in the late 50s.
Despite the worry, she is not exactly afraid for her own life, but she is affected by the speculation surrounding the mysterious disappearances.
"But it's not so much fun to read about yourself online and find the question: 'is she the next Amy Eskridge?' Thank you for that, as well," says Beatriz Villarroel.
Eskridge is another affected researcher, specializing in antigravity. She took her own life in 2022 and many people question whether this is really true. Her own family does not see the incident as anything other than self-inflicted.
Fear of touch around UFOs
In parallel with the FBI's interest in missing researchers, the Trump administration has also increased openness about UFOs, where the Pentagon has loosened its previous secrecy and instead started publishing rather than keeping UFO reports secret.
"We need many more researchers who are involved in UFO issues. Because right now there is a fear of touch," says Beatriz Villarroel.
