Tina Peters, the Republican Mesa County Clerk and Recorder, was convicted in 2024 of facilitating unauthorized access to her county’s Dominion voting equipment in May 2021. The case became a flashpoint in post-2020 election disputes. Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold played a central official role in the state’s response.

What happenedAfter the 2020 election, Peters aligned with figures promoting claims that the results were fraudulent, including associates of MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell. In May 2021, during a scheduled “trusted build” software update on Mesa County’s machines, she allowed an unauthorized person (Conan Hayes, linked to Lindell) into the secure process. She used another person’s security badge, misrepresented the visitor as a county employee, and had surveillance cameras turned off. Hard-drive images were copied before and after the update; passwords and images later appeared online at a Lindell event.
