The rise of 'quantum gravity?' Einstein's theory seen in the quantum realm for 1st time

September 8, 2026

"These two pillars of modern physics have so far eluded all attempts at a unified theoretical framework, but this complex experiment gives more hints as to how such a unification may be achieved."

Scientists have spotted the first hints that Albert Einstein's formulation of gravity operates in the quantum realm.

The hints have to do with observations of a falling quantum object, and though this may not seem like a huge deal (literally, we are talking about atoms here), it could be an important step on the road to a theory of … everything.

To start, we have to go back to the early years of the 20th century. Consider Einstein's iconic theory of gravity, general relativity, and the elusive realm of quantum mechanics.

While the former describes the universe on scales of planets, stars and black holes, even demonstrating how galaxies and galaxy clusters formed, the latter describes the counterintuitive physics found on scales smaller than atoms.

But there is a problem: these two important theories don't play well together.

There is no quantum theory of gravity. However, scientists think we're getting closer to one.

A team of researchers has performed an experiment to find the point where quantum mechanics and general relativity meet. Namely, how the quantum properties of atoms change as those atoms fall under the influence of gravity.

"This is a unique paper, in the sense that it combines a hard experiment with a far-reaching theoretical interpretation, about one of the most fundamental questions in physics: How can gravity, described by Einstein's theory of relativity, and quantum theory, be unified into one understanding of the universe?" team leader Ron Folman of the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev said in a statement. "These two pillars of modern physics have so far eluded all attempts at a unified theoretical framework, but this complex experiment gives more hints as to how such a unification may be achieved."

Elevators and equivalence

At the cornerstone of the team's experiment is an important element of general relativity called the equivalence principle.

The equivalence principle states that, for an observer in free fall, gravity should disappear. If that sounds confusing, consider this popular analogy: You are inside a closed elevator with no view of your surroundings.

You feel heavy. You might drop a ball, and it would fall to the floor of the elevator. Why would these things happen? Well, there are two options.

1/2

Anonymous ID: 02eabf Sept. 8, 2026, 11:32 a.m. No.25018387   🗄️.is 🔗kun   >>8458 >>8508 >>8565 >>8639 >>8712

>>25018385

You might be sitting stationary on the ground floor, or the elevator could be moving upwards at an acceleration equal to the gravitational field strength of Earth, 9.8 meters per second squared.

You can't tell the difference between gravity and acceleration. That's the equivalence principle.

Now, let's shake that up. Suddenly, you can't feel weight anymore. You drop the ball, and it floats. Gravity has disappeared, or the upward acceleration has ended. Inside the elevator, two things may have happened, and you can't distinguish between these two either.

The elevator cable may have snapped, and you may now be in free fall, or the upward acceleration may have carried you to space and then ceased.

The big question now is: How do you test this on a quantum scale, especially for particles that behave as waves as they travel?

Wave hello to quantum gravity?

To measure the equivalence principle at a quantum scale, the researchers turned to a piece of equipment called the Quantum Galileo Interferometer.

This allowed them to split the quantum wave associated with a traveling atom into two paths. One was held in place while the other was allowed to fall freely.

The team then reunited the wave to observe the changes gravity had introduced to the falling wave.

For the experimental subjects, the team chose a cloud of rubidium atoms, which they cooled to just above absolute zero.

These were placed close to the surface of a specially designed atom chip. Using microwave pulses, the scientists placed the atoms in what is known as a quantum superposition.

A superposition is one of those really weird things unique to quantum physics, effectively allowing a quantum system to simultaneously exist in two or more contradictory states.

In this case, the superposition allowed each atom to travel along two different paths at the same time.

Magnetic fields generated by the atomic chip applied an upward push along one path, counteracting the downward pull of gravity and holding it stationary.

The other path was subjected to magnetic pulses pushing the atoms upwards. The pulses were then shut off, allowing the atoms to fall freely under gravity like a ball thrown into the air.

When the waves were reunited, the team used an effect called interference, which occurs when the peaks and troughs of two misaligned waves meet, to measure changes in the free-falling wave.

This represented the first time that the effects of gravity and free fall on the phase of a quantum wave had been measured.

However, while this is an effective demonstration of Einstein's equivalence principle in the quantum realm, it isn't a demonstration of quantum gravity. Yet it remains a step along a frustratingly long road physicists have been traveling down for over a century with no end in sight.

"We have no consistent theory telling us why quantum physics should fail," team member Vlatko Vedral said in the statement. "This experiment pushes quantum mechanics into one of its most intriguing frontiers, gravity, and shows that, once again, its predictions hold."

FEDERAL CHARGES: Tourist charged for flying drone over Kennedy Space Center launch pads

September 8, 2026

A federal criminal complaint filed August 7 in Orlando charges Xiaodong He with flying a drone through restricted airspace over NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, according to court records in case 6:26-mj-1933.

The complaint charges He with violation of National Defense Airspace under 49 U.S.C. 46307 and operating an aircraft without an airman’s certificate under 49 U.S.C. 46306(b)(7).

According to an affidavit by NASA Office of Inspector General Special Agent Christine Beers, Kennedy Space Center Security Police responded to a drone notification on the evening of July 25 and found He operating a DJI Mavic 4 Pro at the Playalinda Beach Vista #8 parking lot inside restricted zone R-2932.

Records cited in the affidavit show the drone flew for 12 minutes and 24 seconds and reached a maximum altitude of about 230 feet.

The affidavit says the flight came within 1.56 miles of Space Launch Complex 39B and 4.23 miles of the Rotation, Processing and Surge Facility.

He told officers he had recorded four videos and offered to let KSC Police watch them, the affidavit states.

Investigators wrote that the first video showed the drone lifting off from the parking lot, climbing above the tree line and capturing Launch Complex 39A and 39B before turning north over the ocean, Playalinda Beach and the lagoon.

He was with three family members who told police they were visiting the United States on vacation and were recording scenery, the affidavit says. A family member said they were not aware of the drone restrictions and offered to delete the videos. Police allowed the deletion.

The affidavit says He told police he did not have an operator certificate. Agents later confirmed with NASA and the FAA that there were no approved flights in R-2932, no DroneZone authorizations or waivers, no LAANC approval, no Part 107 license and no registration for the drone.

A preliminary forensic review of the drone controller found that each time the aircraft launched that day, the controller displayed a warning reading “Aircraft in Warning Zone (Airport). Fly with caution,” according to the affidavit.

KSC Police seized the drone and controller, issued He a District Court Violation Notice for operating a drone over a critical infrastructure facility, issued trespass warnings to all four people and escorted them off the property.

The affidavit notes the group told police they were scheduled to leave the country on August 8 from LaGuardia Airport.

The complaint was sworn before U.S. Magistrate Judge Leslie Hoffman Price. A criminal complaint is an accusation. He is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.

KSC posts “No Drone Zone” signage at approaches on North Courtenay Parkway, the NASA Causeway and Titusville Road, according to photos included in the filing.

New space strategy will bolster UK defences against threats from space

8 September 2026

New national space strategy brings together UK’s plans for growth, defence, and national security to help reindustrialise the UK

Government will design a resilient, integrated national satellite communications system to boost our security and defence

Strategy also brings everyday benefits to Brits from better connectivity on trains to stronger phone signals

Safeguarding our national security and defence capabilities are the key pillars of a new strategy launched today (Tuesday 8 September) which puts the UK’s space sector to work in reindustrialising the country over the coming years.

Backed by a record £7.8 billion until 2030, the UK Space Strategy brings government’s space investment and activity under one plan to drive growth, strengthen security and back the technologies that underpin modern life.

It also recognises space as an increasingly important domain for keeping our country safe.

Work to strengthen Space Domain Awareness – the study and monitoring of objects like satellites, rockets and debris orbiting our planet – is being backed by projects including £149 million for the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Vigil mission and £85 million for the National Space Operations Centre.

UK funding will see British tech offer earlier warnings of potential satellite collisions, hostile activity and solar storms, helping protect the power, communications and navigation services people rely on every day.

Meanwhile £880 million will help beef up the UK’s space control and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities, funding technologies that can track military activity on the ground and potential attacks on satellites, meaning we can act quickly and decisively to protect our way of life on Earth and our assets in space.

A further £2.8 billion meanwhile will go towards strengthening connectivity, including the Connectivity in Low Earth Orbit and SKYNET defence communications programmes, which play a pivotal role in keeping our Armed Forces connected wherever they are in the world.

These benefits will also be felt in everyday life, helping bring faster, more reliable connectivity to rural communities and reducing mobile signal dropouts on trains by using advanced satellite communications.

Together, these investments will help grow a UK space sector worth £18.6 billion and supporting over 55,000 skilled jobs – cementing Britain’s place as a global space leader from satellite services that underpin the economy to landmark missions such as the UK-built Rosalind Franklin Mars Rover.

Russia resumes strikes on military targets in Kiev (VIDEOS)

8 Sep, 2026 06:06 | Updated 8 Sep, 2026 07:47

President Putin had announced a break in attacks ahead of visits by US negotiators to the Russian and Ukrainian capitals

Russian forces have struck drone and missile production facilities and logistics centers in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, the Defense Ministry in Moscow has said.

The raid comes as a three-day break in attacks on military-related targets in the Ukrainian capital, announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin ahead of trips to Moscow and Kiev by US President Donald Trump’s envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, expired.

The large-scale overnight strike involved ground-, air-, and sea-based precision weapons as well as long-range attack drones, the ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.

Ukrainian defense industry facilities involved in the production and storage of drones and cruise missiles were hit during the attack, the statement read.

They included the Kiev Radio Plant where components for reconnaissance and strike UAVs were produced, including long-range models used to attack civilian targets within Russia, it said.

An industrial facility belonging to weapons maker Fire Point was also hit during the bombardment, the ministry said, adding that the site had made warheads for attack drones and Flamingo cruise missiles.

Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky actively promotes Fire Point and its products internationally, despite the firm being linked to his longtime business associate Timur Mindich, who fled Ukraine after becoming a key figure in a $100 million corruption scandal last year.

The Russian military also targeted another plant engaged in the manufacture of parts for US-designed AI-assisted Hornet medium-range strike UAVs, according to the statement.

Missiles and drones struck transport, logistics, and distribution centers for military cargo in the Ukrainian capital and Kiev Region, the ministry said.

The Vaslikov airbase of the Ukrainian armed forces and a radio-electronic surveillance facility of the country’s security service, the SBU, in Markhalyovka outside Kiev were also hit as part of the raid.

According to the ministry, Russian forces also destroyed several targets in Odessa Region, including facilities in the port of Chenomorsk, used for unloading military cargo.

Earlier, Ukrainian Telegram channels reported air raid sirens and explosions in and outside Kiev as well as in other parts of the country, including in Odessa and Sumy regions.

Kiev Mayor Vitaly Klitschko announced that the Ukrainian capital was under a ballistic missile attack, urging residents to remain in shelters. According to Klitschko, six people were wounded in the city, with three of them requiring hospitalization.

Putin had ordered the Russian military to pause strikes on targets in the Ukrainian capital until Tuesday ahead of Saturday’s talks with Witkoff and Kushner in Moscow.

The meeting at the Kremlin dedicated to the settlement of the Ukraine conflict lasted over three hours. Putin’s spokesperson Dmitry Peskov later said it was indicative of an “atmosphere of trust” between Moscow and Washington.

Trump’s envoys later met with Vladimir Zelensky in Kiev on Sunday, with the Ukrainian leader joking about the hiatus in Russian strikes that Witkoff and Kushner “worked even better than the Patriot systems” and asked them to visit more often.

Witkoff said he “felt good” about the discussions in Moscow and Kiev, expressing hope that trilateral talks between the sides could be announced “in short order.”

Moscow maintains that its long-range missile and drone strikes against Ukraine are a response to Kiev’s daily drone incursions targeting civilian infrastructure and residential areas inside Russia.

According to Russian officials, Zelensky’s government is resorting to terrorist attacks in an attempt to compensate for setbacks on the battlefield, where Russian forces continue their steady advance.

The Defense Ministry in Moscow maintains that it does not attack civilians, with its strikes being directed solely at military targets and infrastructure supporting Ukrainian forces.

10 killed, dozens wounded in RSF drone strike in Sudan's North Kordofan state: Rights group

Update: 08 September 2026

Attack renews growing concerns over safety of civilians, court workers across Sudan, Emergency Lawyers group warns

A Sudanese rights group said Tuesday that 10 people were killed and dozens injured when a drone attack by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) targeted a courthouse in the city of Um Rawaba in the North Kordofan state.

"The preliminary death toll from the attack stands at 10, with dozens injured," the Emergency Lawyers group said in a statement.

The attack renewed growing concerns over the safety of civilians and court workers across Sudan, the group warned.

It called for an immediate halt to attacks on civilians and civilian and judicial facilities and an independent and transparent investigation into the attack.

The RSF did not immediately comment on the statement.

On Aug. 24, the UN said 1,100 civilians had been killed in drone attacks in Sudan this January to June.

The three states of the Kordofan region — North, West and South Kordofan — have witnessed clashes between the army and the RSF since last October.

Since April 2023, the Sudanese army and the RSF have been engaged in a war that has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced around 13 million, according to UN and international estimates.

‘No drone zone' during RNC midterm convention, UAV flights restricted

September 8, 2026

Federal agencies want to make sure people are aware of a temporary flight restriction while President Trump is in North Texas.

Federal officials are restricting drone flights over much of North Texas during President Trump's visit to Dallas this week for the RNC midterm convention.

The Transportation Security Administration’s Federal Air Marshal Service (FAMS), U.S. Secret Service, FBI and U.S. Customs and Border Protection are warning UAV pilots about temporary flight restrictions beginning Tuesday and running through Friday.

The Federal Aviation Administration has restricted all UAV flights within a three-mile radius of the American Airlines Center and in other locations where the president may be present while in North Texas.

Violating those temporary flight restrictions is considered illegal and dangerous and unauthorized drone operators may face serious consequences, including confiscation of their drones, revocation of pilot certificates and civil penalties of up to $75,000 per violation.

Law enforcement agencies may also pursue criminal penalties, including fines of up to $100,000 and up to one year in federal prison.

Drone operators should check for active flight restrictions before flying by using an FAA-approved B4UFLY service provider. These free tools provide near real-time information on TFRs and restricted airspace.

Mysterious seven-mile 'sunken city' spotted near the Bermuda Triangle

14:29 EDT, 7 September 2026 | Updated: 16:26 EDT, 7 September 2026

A mysterious pattern spotted in seafloor data has sparked claims that a ‘sunken city’ may be hiding near the Bermuda Triangle.

Self-described UFO researcher Scott C Waring identified the shapes near Cuba and Haiti, arguing they could be the remains of a city constructed by ancient humans.

Waring made the purported discovery using an online map from the Seabed 2030 project, a global initiative seeking to map the entire ocean floor by the end of the decade.

The seafloor data shows a series of faint, roughly parallel and intersecting lines across the seabed west of the island.

He estimated that the apparent site stretches seven or eight miles in one direction and approximately three miles in the other.

‘This new map is extraordinary,’ Waring said in a YouTube video highlighting the area. ‘In this one location, there is an ancient sunken city.

‘There are a lot of geometric shapes, which indicate there is something down here that was intelligently made,’ he added.

However, no archaeologists or marine scientists have examined the site or confirmed that the patterns represent physical, human-made structures.

Waring said the scale and regularity of the shapes convinced him that they were unlikely to have formed naturally.

He considered whether the supposed builders were humans or visitors from another world.

‘Now, is it ancient alien or is it ancient humans?’ Waring asked on his site, UFO Sightings Daily. ‘That’s the big question.’

He ultimately favored a lost human civilization, arguing: ‘I would probably go with ancient humans because the geometric design looks more primitive and less futuristic to me.'

Waring suggested the shapes could mark the remains of a settlement resembling Atlantis, the legendary civilization said to have disappeared beneath the sea.

‘This could be a long-lost city, long ago like Atlantis or something, built on the coral reef of an island area,’ he said.

He speculated that a powerful earthquake may have destabilized the island, causing the reef and everything constructed upon it to collapse into the ocean.

‘An earthquake just could have rattled it so much that coral could have just collapsed on itself and the whole island could have sunk,’ Waring explained.

However, he acknowledged that the scenario was only his own theory and presented no geological or archaeological evidence showing that an island once existed at the site.‘This is just my hypothesis, my guess,’ he said.

Waring placed the anomaly in the waters near Cuba and Haiti, close to the Turks and Caicos Islands and the Bahamas.

He also described it as lying near the Bermuda Triangle, the loosely defined region of the Atlantic associated with decades of stories about vanishing ships, missing aircraft and unexplained compass behavior.

Waring claimed alleged magnetic anomalies in the area could cause vessels to lose their bearings or even suffer engine failures.

However, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) says there is no evidence that mysterious disappearances occur more frequently within the Bermuda Triangle than in any other heavily traveled section of ocean.

The agency notes that severe storms, rapid weather changes caused by the Gulf Stream, shallow waters and human error can explain many of the incidents attributed to the supposed phenomenon.

Waring also questioned why the same patterns were not visible on Google Earth, alleging that the platform had concealed the area beneath a layer of smoothed blue imagery.

‘Google Earth shows nothing there at all,’ he said. ‘They use a smoothing program, cover it in blue and you get to see nothing.’

There is no evidence that Google deliberately concealed anything at the location.

Maps of the ocean floor are assembled from information of varying quality and resolution, including direct sonar measurements, satellite observations and computer-generated estimates used to fill enormous gaps between surveys.

Combining those sources can produce straight lines, grids and other apparently geometric patterns that do not necessarily represent genuine objects on the seabed.

Confirming a lost settlement would require detailed sonar surveys, underwater photographs and physical evidence such as worked stone, pottery, tools or other artifacts.

Until such an investigation is conducted, the ‘city’ remains an interpretation of patterns within mapping data rather than a verified archaeological discovery.

Exeter UFO Festival means costumes, curiosity, and kindred spirits

Sept. 7, 2026, 4:52 p.m. ET

key points

The Exeter UFO Festival is held annually on Labor Day weekend in Exeter, New Hampshire.

The Exeter UFO Festival was inspired by a reported UFO sighting that took place in September 1965.

New Hampshire is home to the case of Betty and Barney Hill, who reported an alien abduction Sept. 19-20 while they drove home from a vacation in Canada.

Green men descended on the town center of Exeter, New Hampshire, albeit mostly in balloon form, and in some cases, we're pretty sure they were really Earth people in disguise.

The occasion? The Exeter UFO Festival, held Sept. 5 and 6, with lectures, costumes, book-signings, and local stores decked out in otherworldly garb, with gifts and goodies to delight visitors from all star systems.

The day served up an array of New England weather, from warm sun to rain showers, and in the midst of talk about the possibility of visits from strangers of other worlds, came some insight about people of Earth trying to make life better for their fellow citizens.

Betty and Barney Hill, the New Hampshire residents who gained notoriety in a mysterious occurrence Sept. 19-20, 1961, dedicated their lives to the cause of Civil Rights, a fact related by guest speaker, Kathleen Marden, the Hill's niece, and longtime UFO researcher.

A sense of mystery

The Exeter UFO Festival is sponsored by the local Kiwanis International, and it serves as a fundraiser for the organization.

Participants can buy tickets for the lecture series and snap up souvenirs such as hats and T-shirts. This year's design is hat tip, as it were, to the Bicentennial, with spacemen turned out as Revolutionary War fighters.

The festival takes its inspiration from the so-called “Incident at Exeter,” dated Sept. 3, 1965 in nearby Kensington, New Hampshire.

More: Woo! Science: Martian New Year fete set at Worcester Public Library

According to the festival website,18-year-old Norman Muscarello reported to the Exeter police his sighting of an unidentified flying object behind a barn in Kensington.

The story goes that the police investigated the site, and likewise saw an object hovering where Muscarello had reported. The story gained worldwide fame, but to this day, no one knows exactly what the object was.

The Exeter UFO Festival formally "launched" Sept. 5, 2009.

As a journalist, I've covered the phenomenon of UFO fascination in our culture for years, and reserve judgement about reported sightings or encounters.

As a science columnist, I dedicate time to astronomers and other researchers using the conventional tools of science to explore and understand our universe.

Could life exist elsewhere? The multitudes of exoplanets suggest a tantalizing possibility, but thus far, there's no evidence that has withstood all of science's rigors and gained a unanimous verdict.

Then, there's the social history of UFOs, and investigations into alleged extraterrestrial encounters and abductions, or attempted abductions.

At its heart, perhaps, is a deep, human desire for storytelling, and the need to make sense of things that otherwise, don't make sense at all.

For Marden, one such story hits very personal.

It's that of Betty and Barney Hill, the Portsmouth, New Hampshire couple who, while driving home through the White Mountains from a vacation in Canada on Sept. 19, 1961, had an experience that would become one of the most famous cases of alleged extraterrestrial abduction.

Marden was their niece, and a young woman when the incident occurred. Marden is dedicated to writing about the Hills, preserving their archives, and delving into possible interactions with extraterrestrial life, or sightings of possible extraterrestrial objects.

During her presentation Sept. 5 at Exeter Town Hall, Marden also talked the Hills' Civil Rights legacy, which is often overshadowed.

"They were very actively involved in politics," said Marden. "That was their world. They wanted to make life better for New Hampshire, and for the world."

Betty was a social services worker; Barney, a longtime postal service work and World War II veteran. The Hills were perhaps unusual at the time as an interracial couple. Despite different backgrounds, promoting equality remained central.

Marden noted that the Hills attended the inauguration of President Lyndon B. Johnson, gaining the attention of the Johnson administration for their Civil Rights work.

Barney served in the Portsmouth, New Hampshire chapter of the NAACP and on a local board for the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. The Hills were also active in social justice causes in their church.

Fascination and skepticism

This year marks the 65th anniversary of the incident. If Sept. 19-20 bestows clear skies for looking up at the stars, give a thought to the Hills, but most especially, think about their lives here on Earth.

Somewhere, perhaps, someone's grandparents made it to the polls and cast a ballot, because the Hills fought unfair practices aimed at denying some people, particularly Black Americans, that most basic right.

Among those who attended Marden's presentation were Rudy Hernandez, of Lawrence, and Jaime Marin, of Lowell. "I'm intrigued," said Hernandez.

As an engineer, Hernandez said, "I like science," and said his interest in topics such as the possibility of extraterrestrial life is tempered by skepticism.

Marin said this festival marks the the third that they have attended.

Although they found Marden's presentation on the Benny and Barney Hill case intriguing, they said much of the content was already familiar. "It was very entertaining," said Hernandez.

'Open to all possibilities'

Worcester musician, writer, blogger and podcaster Matthew Hopewell, host of the podcast, "The AP Strange Show," attended the festival Sept. 5 with his wife, and attending a meet-and-greet with the festival's guest speakers.

Hopewell has attended the festival in the past, and always stops in at the art and frame shop, A Picture is Worth A Thousand Words, which will put out a table of books on UFOs.

Hopewell was happy to meet Peter Robbins, a longtime UFO researcher who reported that he and his sister saw several unknown objects in the sky in the 1960s.

Asked about the value of attending an event such as the Exeter UFO Festival, Hopewell said, "It's just having a degree of understanding of reality as bigger and weirder than we think it is."

In a universe vast in scope and still largely unexplored by human beings, Hopewell said, "There is a broader scope of what is going on out there."

Hopewell believes curiosity about the possibility of extraterrestrial life, and whether there have been encounters with beings of Earth, requires some balance, and said, "I think there are certainly wrong ways that are psychologically harmful," including a conspiratorial mindset. "I think the best way is just to be open to all possibilities."

Hopewell said, "It's a valuable exercise to be able to challenge your own assumptions about the meanings of things, exercises for the mind to imagine greater possibilities – that is that the heart of all human inquiry, the heart of spirituality, and at the heart of science."

“We Couldn’t Believe What We Were Seeing”: Scientists Have Discovered a Bizarre New Microbe with an “Alien” Reproductive Strategy

September 8, 2026

A recent study published in Protist reports that a marine microorganism reproduces in a previously unknown way: by creating new cells inside its body, then rupturing to release them.

The bizarre process is reminiscent of the reproductive horror depicted in the movie Alien, albeit on a microscopic scale.

This microbe is part of the Labyrinthulomycetes, a group of marine microorganisms that play a key role in recycling nutrients by breaking down dead plants and animals in salty environments.

Beyond their ecological importance, some species in this group are valued for producing omega-3 fatty acids like DHA, which is also found in oily fish, and carotenoids, pigments used in food coloring.

This newly discovered species also contains roughly 50% protein, adding to its potential commercial value for applications such as food supplements, infant formula, and aquaculture.

An “Alien” Reproductive Strategy

“Instead of dividing into two, as we would expect, the mature cells develop a large internal chamber in which entirely new daughter cells grow,” said Professor Peter Morris, a plant biologist at Heriot-Watt University.

“Some of those daughters already have another developing generation inside them, before they are released when the mother cell breaks open,” Morris added.

“So, these microbes can be pregnant grandmothers, in the same way as some species of greenfly are born already pregnant.”

The researchers named the new species Caledochytrium aldermanii, drawing from Caledonia, the Latin name for Scotland, where it was discovered in three locations.

The species name also recognizes Dr. David Alderman, whose early work culturing the microbe made the study possible.

This discovery resulted from a long-term collaboration among Heriot-Watt University, its spinout company Strameno, CEFAS Weymouth, and the Institute of Aquaculture at Stirling University.

Caught by Watching, Not Just Sequencing

Dr. Jane Polglase, who has spent nearly five decades studying Labyrinthulomycetes and co-founded Strameno with Alderman and Dr. Lydia Brown, helped document the microbe’s unusual reproduction.

The team relied on traditional observation and description, an approach less common in today’s genomics-focused research.

“While lots of scientists now focus on the DNA of any creature, we’ve taken an old-fashioned approach, also observing the microbe’s behavior and describing its morphology fully,” Polglase said.

“If we had not done that, we never would have captured this peculiar reproductive process on camera.” When the team finally caught it under an electron microscope, she said, “We couldn’t believe what we were seeing.”

Resourceful Marine Recyclers

Researchers found Caledochytrium in a variety of habitats, including octopus dens, on rainbow trout, and in a salt marsh along Scotland’s east coast. The researchers believe it contributes to nutrient recycling by breaking down animal and plant material.

An important part of this recycling process is the ectoplasmic net, a network of membranes the microbe creates to move around, feed, and stay buoyant.

When it moves to a new surface, the microbe leaves the net behind, where marine larvae can feed on the leftover material, helping pass protein and lipids up the food chain.

What Comes Next

“Understanding how this species reproduces is key to understanding how it could be used in commercial settings, like aquaculture,” Morris said.

With this phase of research complete, the Heriot-Watt and Strameno team hopes others will continue the work. The discovery highlights how much remains to be learned about the diversity and behavior of life in the oceans.

Baba Vanga's Alleged World War III and Alien Spacecraft Claims for 2026 Go Viral Again Online

07 September 2026

Exploring the truth behind Baba Vanga's alleged 2026 prophecies

Baba Vanga is back at the centre of a viral prophecy storm, with social media posts once again claiming the late Bulgarian mystic predicted World War III and an alien spacecraft arriving on Earth in 2026.

The claims have spread as global tensions and interest in unidentified objects in the sky continue to fuel online speculation. But there is a major problem with the story: there is no authenticated document showing that Vanga made either prediction.

The renewed interest comes as reports and social media accounts recycle lists of alleged predictions attributed to Vanga, who died in August 1996.

Some versions claim she foresaw a major global conflict during 2026, while others say humanity will encounter extraterrestrial beings, potentially involving a large spacecraft entering Earth's atmosphere.

Similar claims have circulated for months, repeatedly attracting attention online.

The controversy matters because Vanga's name is frequently attached to predictions only after the fact. Researchers and historians have pointed out that she left no written archive or authenticated annual list of prophecies.

Much of the material attributed to her comes from oral accounts, later publications and internet retellings, making it difficult to establish what she actually said.

What Baba Vanga Allegedly Predicted for 2026

The most widely repeated 2026 claims centre on war, extraterrestrial contact and major upheaval. Online versions claim Vanga predicted that a conflict involving major powers would escalate into a Third World War in 2026.

Other versions claim that November could bring a dramatic encounter with extraterrestrial life, including an unidentified spacecraft entering Earth's atmosphere. No authenticated statement recorded during Vanga's lifetime supports these claims.

The alleged predictions have gained traction partly because they are being discussed against a backdrop of genuine geopolitical instability, which has made it easier to connect vague references to war retrospectively to current events.

Why Baba Vanga's 'Predictions' Always Go Viral

Vanga's reputation has grown considerably since her death, with new lists of supposed predictions appearing around the start of different years.

The Guardian reported in March 2026 that many predictions attributed to Vanga have been distorted online and used in sensational or political narratives.

The publication noted that Vanga left no written records of her prophecies and that no recordings of her consultations exist. Accounts from people who knew her also challenge the idea that she regularly made sweeping predictions about world affairs.

That lack of primary evidence creates a significant verification problem: a prediction can be presented online as something Vanga said decades ago, while the original wording, date and witness may be impossible to establish.

What NASA Actually Says About Alien Sightings

The extraterrestrial aspect of the viral story also lacks scientific confirmation. NASA says it has found no credible evidence of extraterrestrial life, and its 2023 UAP study concluded there is no conclusive evidence that reported UAP have an extraterrestrial origin.

Its scientific work continues to search for possible signs of life beyond Earth, but unidentified objects cannot automatically be classified as alien spacecraft.

This distinction matters because unidentified objects are simply that—unidentified—and the existence of unexplained sightings is not proof of extraterrestrial visitors.

The 2027 Baba Vanga Claims and What's Really Going On

The renewed attention also comes as new stories about alleged Vanga predictions for 2027 circulate online.

A recent report citing the Daily Mail discussed claims involving a mysterious disease or genetic experiment supposedly producing people with unusual or 'superhuman' characteristics, but no independent source has verified these claims.

The Guardian's examination of Vanga's legacy, however, highlights the same fundamental problem: claims attributed to her often lack a reliable contemporary source.

The emergence of new predictions decades after her death warrants scrutiny rather than automatic acceptance.

For now, there is no reliable evidence that Baba Vanga specifically predicted World War III or an alien spacecraft arriving in 2026.

The claims remain part of a long-running body of posthumous prophecy folklore, amplified whenever current events make the predictions appear newly relevant.

guess they didn't see the claims in 2025 by Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, former President of the Republic of Kalmykia and longtime President of the World Chess Federation, that basically validated her
