In Putin Call, Trump Seeks Swift End To Ukraine War & Restoration Of US-Russia Ties

On Tuesday morning President Trump and his Russian counterpart President Putin held a "positive" phone call regarding finding an end to the Ukraine war, the Kremlin side has stated.

Russian president aide Yury Ushakov has been the first to provide a readout, with little revealed from the US side in the immediate aftermath. The phone call was "constructive and frank" and lasted exactly one hour, but remains "strictly confidential."

Likely the White House will also be equally scant in what information it chooses to release, given the sensitivity of the timing, coming just off the weekend shuttle diplomacy by Trump's envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.

Their rare, direct meeting with Putin on Saturday lasted than three hours, after which they traveled to Ukraine to meet with Zelensky, in what was a much more chummy atmosphere, naturally.

Ushakov in his fresh comments described of that prior meeting, "Overall, the visit of the aforementioned American representatives was assessed positively." He further said "European narratives about a Russian threat" were discussed in the call - an issue now "being used to justify support for Ukraine and increased European military spending."

The readout indicates, "Putin supported Trump’s commitment to building a constructive Russia–US partnership and emphasized that Russia has no hostile plans toward Europe."

Trump said he wants a breakthrough on Ukraine during his presidency and stressed that ending the conflict could open the way to a major restoration of Russia–US relations.

The only additional information that the Kremlin aide provided was that Trump and Putin agreed that work through direct contact as well as diplomatic channels would "continue".

The Witkoff-Kushner trip had come a little under two weeks after CIA Director John Ratcliffe unexpectedly traveled to Moscow and reportedly floated a trilateral summit involving Trump, Putin, and Zelensky.

Houthis Pummel Southwest Saudi Arabia With Ballistic Missiles, As Yemen Air & Ground War Erupts

The heaviest fighting since the Iran war began is taking place in Yemen currently, also involving significant overnight attacks on Saudi energy and military sites by the Houthis.

The Houthis have since unveiled new operations, in a Tuesday statement saying the Iran-aligned group is targeting critical Saudi oil and military infrastructure. Widely circulating local videos suggest the attacks on multiple sites were in some case simultaneous and overwhelming.

"In response to this brutal aggression and in confronting comprehensive escalation with comprehensive escalation, the YAF carried out a large-scale … operation, targeting Aramco facilities in Abha and Najran, the Economic City, Aramco in Jizan, and Khamis Mushait Air Base, using dozens of ballistic missiles and drones," said the Houthi statement.

"The strikes, by God's grace, were accurate and direct and caused significant damage to those facilities," it added.

The kingdom's Energy Ministry has indeed acknowledged fires and operations stoppages at several sites as a result, as well as damage and injured personnel.

"Several energy sector facilities and installations in the southern region of the kingdom were targeted this morning," the energy ministry stated.

"The attacks caused fires at several locations, leading to a temporary halt in some operations. Specialized field teams have begun containing the fires, securing the sites, and assessing the damage," the statement said. Aramco sites have been targeted on multiple occasions this summer, resulting in operations halts, particularly at key sites near the Yemeni border. Damage is still being assessed at the Aramco Jisan oil facilities, which were targeted yet again.

Also military and supply missions were hit, with the Houthi statement also indicating the destruction of Saudi military equipment and convoys of Saudi-backed forces of the internationally-recognized government.

Dozen of civilians were killed in Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon over the weekend, RT’s Steve Sweeney has reported.

Attacks by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on the neighboring country are continuing despite a US-mediated ceasefire, which has been in force starting late June. More than 4,000 people have been killed and over 12,000 wounded by the IDF in Lebanon since March, according to the authorities in Beirut.

In his report from Lebanon’s Nabatieh area on Tuesday, Sweeney said a baby and two teenagers were among the 22 people who lost their lives in a “bloody aggression” by Israeli forces between Friday evening and the early hours of Monday. The Lebanese Heath Ministry later released updated figures, saying that 27 civilians were killed and 69 others wounded during the period.

Despite Israel saying that it was hitting targets linked to armed group Hezbollah across the region, what they actually struck was a children’s amusement park, a hospital, and a residential building, which was completely razed to the ground, Sweeney said.

He added that the owner of the destroyed home told him that “an evacuation order was issued for this building [by IDF] in the very early hours of Monday morning… he was called by relatives and he evacuated at about 3 AM. And then just minutes later, the Israelis struck.”

The intensification of IDF strikes comes ahead of another round of peace talks between West Jerusalem and Beirut, scheduled to take place on September 15 and 16.

Haaretz says the Israeli PM received a direct warning from the UAE just ahead of the assault

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was personally warned that Hamas was preparing a major attack days before October 7, 2023, but did not relay the information to Israel’s top security chiefs, Haaretz reported on Tuesday.

According to the newspaper, Emirati President Mohammed bin Zayed called Netanyahu roughly ten days before the assault and told him that Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar was planning a major operation that could cause bloodshed and destabilize the region.

Netanyahu reportedly played down the threat, saying he believed Hamas was more likely to act in the West Bank and that Israel was prepared.

His office has rejected the report as an “absolute lie,” insisting no such call took place.

The alleged advance notice has added to scrutiny over what Israeli leaders knew ahead of the Hamas-led assault and whether warning signs were ignored.

Haaretz previously reported that Sinwar had sent messages through Palestinian intermediaries warning that he was preparing an “earthquake.” The message reportedly reached Shin Bet, Israel’s domestic security service, whose then-chief Ronen Bar briefed Netanyahu. Egyptian intelligence was also reported to have warned Israel shortly before the attack.

Israeli intelligence had separately obtained a Hamas battle plan known as ‘Jericho Wall’, outlining a cross-border assault, attacks on military positions and hostage-taking. The New York Times later reported that the document closely resembled the October 7 operation. Israeli officials have disputed how seriously the plan was taken and whether it was considered an imminent threat.

Netanyahu’s government has also faced criticism for allowing Qatari funds to flow into Hamas-run Gaza for years. Critics argue the policy ultimately strengthened the group Israel later went to war to destroy.

Questions have also been raised over Israel’s military response on October 7. Investigations have suggested that the so-called ‘Hannibal Directive’, which permits extreme measures to prevent the capture of soldiers, may have contributed to Israeli civilian deaths as forces struck vehicles and other locations where hostages or civilians may have been present.

Whistleblower Says Just 1% of UK Asylum Claims Genuine, With Hundreds Recycling Tall Tales to Get Approval

Hundreds of asylum seekers have claimed to have slept with the daughter of the Kurdish Prime Minister to justify why they can’t go home, a whistle-blower is reported to have said as he reveals very nearly all asylum claims in Britain are fraudulent, but that there is a culture and incentive structure of accepting them anyway.

Only one-in-100 asylum claims made to the British government are genuine, but huge numbers of them are approved anyway, an anonymous whistle-blower cited by the national newspaper of record, The Times is reported to have claimed. Identified only as “J”, the whistle-blower is said to be a Home Office asylum ‘decision maker’ with years of experience and thousands of claims assessed, who says the fraud is so transparent the improbable and constantly recycled back-stories given by migrants — who he believes are coached on their claims to give the ‘right’ answers to get approved — are obvious, yet are so often approved anyway.

In recent years as many as three-quarters of asylum applications to the British government were approved. Although this has come down and is now comparatively low at about a third, if the one-per-cent figure of those being genuinely in need of asylum is even close to being true, the claims suggest Britain is continuing to absorb a huge quantity of costly dependents through fraud.

Per the claims, there is a culture within the Home Office that biases assessors towards accepting migrant’s stories, and that staff are told to treat the asylum seekers as “customers” as “you’re providing a service to them, not a service to the country”. That accepting an application is quick and involved little paperwork, while denying one takes time and is difficult creates an incentive structure to rubber-stamp applications, it was said.

“J” is reported to have said: “At best 1 per cent of asylum seekers are genuine. There’s almost no aspect of the asylum system that isn’t either a massive fraud or just really dysfunctional. Nothing works as it should”.

Perhaps the most extraordinary revelations in the whistle-blower’s account is of the incredibly low-effort lies allegedly told by asylum seekers, which nevertheless appear to work often enough to make them worth constantly recycling. The system gives applicants months to hone their stories and to be coached to give the right answers by rote, it is claimed, with the same grounds for admission heard by assessors “hundreds” of times.

Founder of British Flag Flying ‘Raise the Colours’ Campaign Charged with 14 Offences

The creator of the campaign to raise British and English flags across the country to protest against illegal migrants being housed in hotels at taxpayer expense has been charged with 14 criminal offences, including using “threatening, abusive or insulting words”.

Thames Valley Police said on Sunday evening that Ryan Bridge, 45, of Blackwell has been charged with 14 offences relating to alleged incidents between January 31 and March 31 of this year in Oxfordshire.

According to GB News, Bridge was the founder of the Operation Raise the Colours campaign, which began last year in opposition to the government policy of taking alleged asylum seekers and placing them in hotels across the country at taxpayer expense.

The police force said that Bridge was charged with seven counts of using threatening words or behaviour to cause harassment, alarm or distress and three counts of using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour with intent to cause fear of, or provoke, unlawful violence.

He was also charged with two counts of racially aggravated intentional harassment, alarm or distress, one count of racially aggravated fear of violence, and one count of common assault.

Thames Valley Police said that they had decided to submit the case to the Crown Prosecution Service following a review of the evidence, witness statements, and video footage.

It comes as the left-wing-run Birmingham city council that they plan on spending around £2.6 million to remove British and English flags from the streets of the UK’s second city.

According to the Daily Telegraph, around 20,000 flags were raised by members of the public on street infrastructure as a part of the Raise the Colours campaign.

The decision to spend millions removing the national flags comes despite the Birmingham currently being in around £3.5 billion in debt, the most of any local government in Britain.

Meanwhile, in Oxfordshire — where the campaign begun — secured an injunction in July to bar anyone from attaching flags to lampposts or to pain the flag on the road.

Those who breach the injunction against raising the flag face potential prison sentences, fines, or even having assets seized, the BBC reported.

The Liberal Democrat leader of the Oxfordshire City Council, Tim Bearder, said at the time: “This is a welcome judgement. We’re very pleased with the result… This sets a legal precedent and will hopefully deter people in not just Oxfordshire but around the country from partaking in this criminal activity.”

‘Immense damage’: German Jewish leaders alarmed by election win of far-right AfD

Alternative for Germany’s plurality in Saxony-Anhalt election leads some of nation’s 200,000 Jews to fear throwback to fascism, amid backlash against culture of Holocaust memory

Munich resident Marian Offman, born in Germany to Holocaust survivors in 1948, is sitting on the proverbial packed suitcase. Offman, his city’s commissioner for interfaith dialogue, is worried about what an AfD leadership would mean for Jews and other minorities.

“To me it is a pure Nazi party,” he told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency. “They are completely anti-religious, just like the Nazis were.”

Offman was among a number of Jews in Germany who expressed alarm at the plurality of 43.8% of the vote the Alternative for Germany party (AfD) received in Sunday’s election in the former East German state of Saxony-Anhalt.

The prospect of an AfD-ruled state has many Germans, not only Jews, fearful of a resurgence of fascism in a country that has worked for decades to confront its Nazi past. Critics point to the party’s platform, which includes such points as expelling unwanted migrants; building pride in notions of German tradition and ethnicity; and stopping funding for “anti-German” art and culture.

The 13-year old AfD – with its anti-EU, anti-foreigner and nationalist stances – trounced the older established parties on Sunday, opening the door to the possibility that it could lead the government in that state.

If it succeeds, it would mark the first time since World War II that a far-right party is poised to govern a German state.

Josef Schuster, president of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, expressed shock at the election results. The party could do “immense damage” if it forms a government, particularly in the educational realm, Schuster told the German Jewish newspaper Juedische Allgemeine, the Central Council’s media organ. The AfD has expressed the goal of refocusing education on German pride.

“Germany has been known as a country that is democratic, that comes to terms with its history, very, very intensively, more than any other country,” Offman said. “And now suddenly a far-right party is in all state parliaments and in the Bundestag,” the federal parliament.

There are about 200,000 Jews in Germany. Fewer than half are members of Jewish communities. About 90% of them came since 1990 from the former Soviet Union; a small number have moved here from Israel, as well. Very few are descended from prewar German Jewish families.

“I’m very much afraid that the atmosphere would change, and I don’t know how to cope with it,” said Flora, who was born in Hungary and has lived in Berlin with her husband for 50 years. She asked that her last name not be used out of concern for her safety.

“I’m afraid of a kind of chain reaction,” she said. “If the mood in Germany is turning, and we don’t have anything to offer to counter this, then all Germany will slide downhill.”

But not all Jews in Germany are that concerned.

“Jews get even more worked up than others,” said Hella Schapiro, an 84-year-old Berliner who dislikes the AfD but is unruffled by their victory.

“They immediately start packing their bags again, and of course that’s completely wrong,” said Schapiro, who was forced to flee her home with her family as a child by the Soviets, first from East Prussia in 1944 and then from the state of Saxony in 1946.

European central banks move gold out of U.S as ‘geopolitical risks’ mount

European central banks are moving billions of euros worth of gold away from North America as growing geopolitical uncertainty prompts a rethink over where national reserves should be held.

The Netherlands, the latest country to act, redistributed about 86 tonnes from holdings in the U.S and Canada to London between March and August as part of an effort to make its reserves easier to access and trade during a severe crisis.

The move follows France’s decision to remove its remaining gold from New York and echoes an earlier programme by Germany to bring hundreds of tonnes back to Frankfurt.

It underlines a growing focus among European central banks on keeping more of their bullion either at home or within major European trading centres rather than relying as heavily on vaults across the Atlantic.

Gold reserves act as a financial backstop for central banks, retaining value during periods of economic or political instability and providing an asset that can be sold or exchanged when other parts of the financial system come under pressure.

London is attractive to central banks because bullion held at the Bank of England sits at the heart of one of the world’s biggest gold markets, allowing reserves to be bought, sold or deployed quickly when required.

For the Netherlands, the latest reshuffle means London now holds 32.1 per cent of its gold, slightly more than the 30.8 per cent stored domestically, while New York and Ottawa each account for 18.5 per cent.

Before the change, almost a third of Dutch reserves were held in New York and a further 19.7 per cent in Canada.

Around 59 tonnes was sold in New York and replaced with gold bought in London. More than 27 tonnes was transported from North America to the Netherlands, with a similar quantity transferred from Dutch vaults to London.

The Netherlands’ total gold reserves remain unchanged at 612.4 tonnes.

De Nederlandsche Bank said holdings in New York and Ottawa could not be used as rapidly or directly in a crisis, while a more balanced spread between Europe and North America would improve resilience amid what it described as “increasing geopolitical unrest”.

The Banque de France revealed earlier this year that it had sold 129 tonnes of gold stored in New York and bought replacement bars in Europe, removing the final five per cent of its reserves held in the U.S without changing the overall size of its 2,437-tonne stock.

In a statement, Olaf Sleijpen, the governor of De Nederlandsche Bank, said: “With this relocation, we have improved the tradability of our gold reserves. We expect that we will never need to use them, but we do need to strengthen our resilience and preparedness.”
