New Zealand is deeply concerned by the deteriorating situation in the West Bank. There has been a marked escalation in Israel’s actions, jeopardising the prospect of a durable peace.
Israeli settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territories are a violation of international law. Expanding settlements undermines prospects for a two-state solution to the longstanding conflict.
New Zealand strongly condemns violence by settlers against Palestinian civilians and calls for accountability for those responsible.
New Zealand joins international partners in calling on the Government of Israel to end the expansion of settlements, prevent and address settler violence, and refrain from actions that further undermine the prospects for peace.
New Zealand strongly opposes actions that advance annexation or threaten the forcible displacement of Palestinians. Such measures are incompatible with international law and risk perpetuating the cycle of violence and insecurity.
A two-state solution remains the best hope for future generations of Israelis and Palestinians to live in peace and security. New Zealand remains committed to supporting this outcome.
