Witness XZ Andromedae Wink
Is this star winking at us? The central object in today’s animation is not one but two stars. XZ Andromedae, indicated by the bold lines, is an Algol-type eclipsing binary with a nearly edge-on orbit from Earth’s perspective. The bottom light curve shows the amount of light from the system dim and brighten as the cooler star eclipses its hotter, brighter companion. Analysis of several XZ Andromedae light curves indicates there may be two other stars orbiting the system. This particular light curve was created with Citizen Astronomy, an open-source software for differential photometry. The software takes the difference in brightness between a target and comparison star and traces its behavior over time. This technique reduces most variations from the instrument and Earth’s atmosphere. In addition to eclipsing binaries, this analysis is useful for studying transiting exoplanets, accreting black holes, supernovae, and many more time-varying astronomical phenomena. Astrophotographers: try it out on your own data!

A fireball blazed over N.J. at 2 a.m. — and someone caught it all on camera
Sep. 09, 2026, 8:45 a.m.
A bright ball of light streaked across the sky over South Jersey early Wednesday, apparently the same fireball seen by people across the Mid-Atlantic.
A video recorded in the Gloucester County community of Franklinville shows the object blazing through the dark sky at 2:38 a.m.
Meteorologist Joe Martucci posted the footage on social media Wednesday morning, saying it was provided by Dacia Slick.
Martucci described it as a “bright ball of light” and asked followers whether it was a shooting star.
The fireball was also picked up by a New York City live cam perched over the East River with views of the Brooklyn and Manhattan skylines.
The local sighting appears to coincide with reports of a brilliant fireball around the same time elsewhere along the East Coast.
Witnesses in several states, including Pennsylvania, Virginia and Maryland, took to Reddit and other social media platforms to describe seeing a brightly colored object streak through the sky.
Some said the flash briefly lit up their surroundings.
It was not immediately clear Wednesday morning whether the object was a meteor or associated with a known meteor shower.
The sighting occurred as the September Epsilon Perseid meteor shower is reaching its annual peak.
The American Meteor Society says the shower is active in early September, but only a small number of meteors are visible each hour.
The society had not immediately posted a finalized trajectory for Wednesday morning’s fireball.
Fireballs are exceptionally bright meteors caused when meteoroids — pieces of asteroids or comets — enter Earth’s atmosphere at high speeds, according to NASA.
They can be visible across hundreds of miles, meaning observers in different states can report the same event.
