NASA Calls for Proposals to Accelerate Lunar Surface Technologies

Sep 08, 2026

NASA is seeking proposals to advance the technology and infrastructure needed to explore the Moon and establish a Moon Base in the lunar South Pole region.

Announced on Tuesday, Sept. 8, the solicitation targets capability gaps, including power generation, oxygen extraction, and producing materials on the Moon required for construction and operations.

These technologies are essential to making humanity’s next great leap in lunar exploration.

“NASA is accelerating the development of key technologies and closing critical gaps needed for long-term human exploration at the Moon,” said Greg Stover, director of NASA’s Advanced Research and Technology Division.

“Partnering with industry will strengthen the U.S. industrial base as we mature the capabilities and infrastructure needed for a sustainable lunar presence.”

The NextSTEP-3 Broad Agency Announcement Appendix A: Lunar Enabling Infrastructure Accelerator solicitation aims to mature and demonstrate capabilities in five areas:

Vertical solar array technology that can provide consistent power generation, management, distribution, and energy storage.

In-situ resource utilization oxygen from regolith production to extract usable oxygen molecularly bonded to rock and dust covering the Moon’s surface.

Radioisotope Stirling generator, a type of nuclear energy technology that uses heat from fissile materials to produce electric power for operating spacecraft systems in the darkest, dustiest, and most remote places.

In-space advanced manufacturing to reduce reliance on resupply missions from Earth and to optimize mission flexibility and resilience on the Moon.

Innovative nanomaterials production to advance the commercial availability and quality of nanomaterials that can be used in lunar exploration.

The solicitation intends to cultivate U.S.-led capabilities while maintaining full and open competition among private industry, academic institutions, and not‑for‑profit entities, as well as international partners participating through U.S.-led teams.

NASA may apply insights gained from the resulting contracts of this solicitation, such as technical data, and demonstration results, to shape future acquisition strategies.

NASA’s Chandra Unveils Mysterious X-Ray Objects

Sep 09, 2026

Using NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory, scientists have discovered a new class of objects behaving unlike any they have seen before.

Astronomers suggest these newly spotted objects in other galaxies may help solve not one, but two long-standing questions in astrophysics.

These mysterious objects give off unusually low-energy X-rays but intense levels of ultraviolet radiation. This discovery is featured in a paper published Wednesday in Nature Astronomy.

“We’ve never encountered a group of objects that act like this,” said Mustafa Muhibullah of the University of Alabama who led the study. “Of course, the next step was to try to figure out what these things are.”

The researchers found a total of 84 of these “hypersoft X-ray sources” – so named because they give such low-energy X-rays – in the six different galaxies they searched, using data openly available to the public in the Chandra archive.

Two of the galaxies are spirals, M31 (the Andromeda galaxy) and M101 (the Pinwheel galaxy), while the other four are ellipticals. They found hypersoft X-ray sources both in regions of active star formation and areas where there are older stars.

The team spotted the sources by finding objects that appeared in Chandra images taken at the lowest X-ray energies but vanished in higher-energy images. That means these objects give off far more low-energy X-rays than high-energy ones.

Because low-energy X-rays border energetic ultraviolet radiation on the electromagnetic spectrum, the researchers determined that these sources are producing large amounts of energetic ultraviolet radiation as well.

It is unclear what types of objects are responsible for these low-energy X-rays and intense ultraviolet radiation. The team thinks they most likely involve a black hole, neutron star, or white dwarf pulling material from a companion star. T

he material pulled from the companion star is heated up to produce X-rays before falling onto the white dwarf or neutron star, or into the black hole. Such binary systems have been seen before, but not with such bright ultraviolet radiation and low-energy X-rays.

The discovery suggests that there may be large populations of binary systems with energetic ultraviolet radiation that have been undetected until now.

“These clandestine X-ray sources are actually among the most energetic objects in galaxies, and they could be solving two cosmic mysteries at once,” said Muhibullah.

Scientists think that some white dwarf systems pulling material from companion stars may eventually explode as a supernova – known as a Type Ia – that is critical for measuring the expansion of the universe.

These supernovae played a key role in discovering that this expansion is accelerating. Astronomers have been looking for the stars that turn into Type Ia supernovae for many years, so far without success.

“If we could find a way to spot these Type Ia supernova explosions before they go off, that would be really important,” said co-author Jimmy Irwin, also of the University of Alabama.

“Right now, we study them after they’ve exploded, and astronomers have struggled to understand what is actually ignited.”

The other mystery these hypersoft X-ray sources might explain is what strips electrons from gas between the stars in some galaxies.

This stripping of electrons is important to probe because it can affect how quickly stars form and influence the life cycles of galaxies. Hot, massive stars play a role, but they do not completely explain what is causing this stripping.

The intense levels of ultraviolet radiation from the hypersoft X-ray sources may play a vital role.

Why were these hypersoft X-ray sources not found until now?

In addition to the low-energy X-ray output, which is very difficult for X-ray telescopes to detect, the high-energy ultraviolet radiation is readily absorbed by helium and hydrogen gas that fills the space between the stars, creating a nearly impenetrable barrier to look through.

“By combing through the Chandra archive, we were able to eliminate what used to be a blind spot for telescopes,” said co-author Rosanne Di Stefano of the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian.

“That’s how we found what appears to be a new class of cosmic objects with remarkable qualities.”

The Space Launch System costs $4.1 billion per launch. One launch.

NASA's own inspector general confirmed that number. Boeing builds the core stage. Northrop Grumman builds the solid rocket boosters. Aerojet Rocketdyne supplies the engines.

Every one of those contracts flows to congressional districts where senators sit on the appropriations committees that fund NASA. Coincidence?

Congress mandated the SLS in 2010 because the cancellation of the Constellation program threatened to idle the same workforce and facilities that had built the Space Shuttle.

Senators Richard Shelby and Bill Nelson wrote the requirement directly into the authorization bill. They protected Alabama and Florida jobs. The politics drove the rocket, not engineering logic.

SpaceX's Falcon Heavy lifts comparable payload for roughly $90 million. The SLS costs forty-five times more per flight. That gap destroys you as a taxpayer; you fund the difference without consent and without choice.

No competitive bid. No market test. Boeing received cost-plus contracts, meaning every overrun simply became next year's invoice to the Treasury.

Ludwig von Mises identified the central problem: when bureaucracies spend other people's money on other people's projects, waste is the predictable outcome, not the aberration.

Congress spent $23 billion developing the SLS before its first launch in November 2022. It launched twice total by mid-2026, with the third mission schedule slipping repeatedly.

The SLS is a constituency management program wearing a rocket as a costume.

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman

@NASAAdmin

When the history book is written about America’s return to the Moon, there will be a few chapters on decades of Shuttle-heritage hardware evolving into Ares V under Constellation,

that lineage ultimately carrying into SLS under Artemis, and the roles NASA, traditional cost-plus contracting, and the broader industrial base played in putting us in a position where the second space race will be much closer than it needed to be.

But how we got here is for another day. We are standardizing the vehicle, reducing cost and getting into a rhythm of launching, because America is putting NASA astronauts on the lunar surface.

And as I have said before, President Trump set the Artemis Program in motion, and the rockets we take to space on the early missions will be very different from those of the future–the reusable vehicles that will put the tonnage on the surface and build the small city that will become the Moon Base.

At that point, NASA should move away from doing what industry is more than capable of doing affordably, and pivot to the next technology, to venture beyond where solar power remains practical and extend America’s reach farther into the solar system.

A ghostly pyramid of light is about to appear before dawn — here's how to see it

September 9, 2026

Starting today (Sept. 9), skywatchers in the Northern Hemisphere have a chance to spot one of the night sky's more elusive sights: the zodiacal light.

Zodiacal light is a faint, pyramid-shaped glow rising in the east before morning twilight. It is caused by sunlight reflecting off interplanetary dust.

The phenomenon is sometimes nicknamed the "false dawn" because its soft glow can be mistaken for the signs of morning twilight.

Unlike dawn, however, the zodiacal light appears as a distinct cone or wedge of light extending upwards from the horizon along the ecliptic — the apparent path the sun, moon and planets follow across the sky.

Early fall provides a good opportunity for northern hemisphere observers to look for zodiacal light before dawn, when the angle of the ecliptic helps the glow stand more prominently above the eastern horizon.

Timing and location are everything in order to observe the Zodiacal Light. You must be far from city lights, looking east, around 4:00 a.m. EDT.

Give your eyes plenty of time to adjust to the darkness and avoid looking at your phone or other bright lights while searching for the faint glow.

How to find it

Trace the cone of light as high as possible. Under pristine, dark skies, you can follow this glow deep into the zodiacal constellations that lie along the ecliptic.

The base of the light cone will start near Cancer, resting just above the horizon, stretching upward through Gemini, and reaching high into the predawn sky toward Taurus.

U.S. Space Force selects Texas as preferred location for third DARC site

Sept. 9, 2026

The U.S. Space Force has approved project planning and selected Lake Kickapoo, Texas, as the preferred location for the third and final site of the Deep Space Advanced Radar Capability, or DARC, global network, pending final planning approvals.

The Texas installation will complete a trilateral network of three advanced ground-based space sensors operated in cooperation with the United Kingdom and Australia.

Once fielded, the network is designed to provide continuous, all-weather, day-and-night space domain awareness and uninterrupted, overlapping coverage of geostationary orbit.

“Selecting Texas as the preferred location for the final DARC site keeps us on track to deliver a truly global deep-space sensing network with our closest allies,” said Gen. Douglas Schiess, Chief of Space Operations.

“This capability will improve visibility in our contested domain and reinforce our shared capacity to protect the space systems on which our nations rely.”

DARC is intended to improve the ability of the United States and its partners to identify, track and characterize objects and activity in deep space.

Compared with existing ground-based optical systems, DARC is designed to provide persistent 24/7 coverage with greater sensitivity, accuracy, capacity and tracking agility, including against smaller objects at geostationary distances.

“DARC is a strong example of how we are translating operational requirements into fielded capability through deliberate acquisition and close collaboration with our allies,” said Dr. Erich “HB” Hernandez-Baquero, Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Space Acquisition and Integration.

“Completing the network architecture at the Texas site will improve resilience and provide the sustained sensing needed for long-term space domain awareness.”

The program is being developed under a 22-year trilateral memorandum of understanding among the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia. The U.S. Space Force serves as the overall lead for the program.

U.S. Space Force Guardians assigned to Mission Delta 2, which is responsible for space domain awareness operations, and the 20th Space Surveillance Squadron, headquartered at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, currently operate the first DARC sensor in Western Australia under an early use agreement and will support integration of the full global network.

“The full DARC network will give operators a more persistent and responsive ability to detect and track activity in deep space,” said Col. Barry Croker, commander of Mission Delta 2.

“That shared awareness is essential to supporting the mission and protecting the space-enabled services essential to U.S. forces and our allies.”

Construction at the Texas site is expected to begin in 2027 following contract award and completion of required approvals.

The site is projected to complete civil construction in 2029, followed by technical testing and evaluation, with operational acceptance planned for 2030.

DARC Site 1 in Western Australia was completed in December 2024 and entered early use operations in 2025. The United Kingdom site in Pembrokeshire, Wales, remains in progress as the preferred location pending planning approval.

When complete, the three-site DARC network will provide the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia with a shared deep-space surveillance capability to support allied space domain awareness and the protection of critical space-enabled infrastructure.

MTG-I2 reaches its final orbit

09/09/2026

Europe’s Meteosat Third Generation Imager 2 (MTG-I2) satellite has reached its designated orbit at 36 000 km from Earth and is ready to begin its commissioning phase, preparing it to provide years of service to improve weather forecasting over Europe and North Africa.

Just 12 days after launch from Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana on board an Ariane 6 rocket, the satellite has completed the first phase of its journey in space, known as launch and early orbit phase, or LEOP.

It joins its two sister satellites in orbit, marking a major milestone for Europe’s next generation of weather satellites and completing the first family of MTG satellites.

Since MTG-I2 separated from its Ariane 6 launcher, the satellite has been carefully guided into its final geostationary orbit. It joins the first imager, MTG-I1, launched in 2022, and the first sounder, MTG-S1, launched in 2025.

The mission’s combined observations will significantly increase the quality, quantity and frequency of weather and environmental data available to European users, supporting improved weather forecasting, severe-weather nowcasting, numerical weather prediction and climate monitoring across Europe and North Africa.

ESA’s Director of Earth Observation Programmes, Simonetta Cheli, said, “This is a key milestone for a mission of great importance for Europe – one that will make a real difference to how we are able to prepare for and respond to extreme weather events.

I look forward to seeing the completed family of MTG satellites providing operational data that will improve resilience for communities. My thanks go to the teams that have worked hard on each phase of the mission, achieving this fantastic result.”

Developed through close collaboration between ESA and Eumetsat, with an international industrial consortium led by Thales Alenia Space in cooperation with OHB and Leonardo, the first MTG constellation is a major demonstration of European cooperation, expertise and ambition. The full constellation will be operated by Eumetsat throughout its lifetime.

Orbital manoeuvres

After liftoff, communication was established through the Malindi ground station in Kenya, the satellite’s propulsion system was started, and its solar arrays were deployed, ensuring that the satellite is able to generate its own power.

ESA’s MTG Satellites Commissioning and Operations Manager, Alex Palacios, said, “Seeing the solar arrays deploy successfully was a truly great moment, when we knew the mission is safe, although it’s only the beginning of a tremendous amount of work.

As expected for such a complex spacecraft, there were small deviations from predictions, but specialists supporting the LEOP campaign were able to explain them quickly and confirm that the satellite was behaving as expected.”

From its point of separation, MTG-I2 still had to increase its distance from Earth by more than 35 000 km in altitude – almost one tenth of the distance from Earth to the Moon.

The LEOP team therefore carried out a series of orbital manoeuvres, including a series of burns of the satellite’s Liquid Apogee Engine (LAE).

The final manoeuvres had to be exceptionally precise to position the satellite in its final geostationary orbit at 3.5°E longitude.

Carl Todd, ESA’s MTG System Software Engineer and leader of one of the three LEOP project support teams, noted “Everyone holds their breath, and when the first manoeuvre is completed successfully, it’s a great shared moment.

But the final LAE firing is incredible from a technical point of view. After all the work that has gone into the previous manoeuvres, you have very precise control over where the satellite is going.”

Preparing for its mission

While the orbital manoeuvres were taking place, the spacecraft was progressively configured for its mission.

This included deployment of the satellite’s antennas: a Ka-band transmission antenna and the antenna supporting the Data Collection System (DCS) and Geostationary Search and Rescue (GEOSAR) services.

The satellite was then pointed towards Earth. Although technically less demanding than the preceding orbital manoeuvres, this was a highly significant moment: it marked the final step of LEOP and prepared the spacecraft for its next phase.

Supporting LEOP

The LEOP is one of the most critical phases of satellite operations.

MTG-I2’s LEOP was assisted by a team of 40 people based in the Telespazio Mission Control Centre in Fucino, with experts from Thales Alenia Space, OHB and ESA, supporting Telespazio and Eumetsat.

Specialists in areas including flight dynamics, propulsion, attitude and orbit control, system and operations engineering and other disciplines worked in shifts, providing continuous support throughout the mission.

Emilia Barbagallo, ESA’s MTG Lead Operations Interface Engineer and leader of the MTG-I2 Project Support Team, explained that during this LEOP, many of the most critical operations took place at night.

“Propulsion experts worked long and hard, preparing predictions before the LAE firings and analysing the results immediately afterwards. These highly sensitive analyses required exceptional concentration.”

Elon Musk Backs Moving NASA SLS Workforce Elsewhere, Says ‘Better To Repurpose’ Workers As Multibillion-Dollar Rocket Faces Cost Questions

September 9, 2026 7:42 AM3 min read

Elon Musk said NASA would be better off moving workers tied to the Space Launch System into other parts of the economy as criticism revived questions over the multibillion-dollar cost of the agency’s Moon rocket.

Musk Says SLS Workforce Should Move Elsewhere

"It would be better to repurpose the workforce to other parts of the economy," Musk wrote in an X post on Tuesday, replying to a post attacking SLS costs and arguing the program has been sustained to preserve legacy aerospace jobs.

NASA’s inspector general estimated in 2021 that flying one SLS/Orion system through Artemis IV would average about $4.1 billion per launch.

The figure covers the rocket, Orion spacecraft, European Service Module and ground operations — not SLS alone. The watchdog estimated SLS production itself at about $2.2 billion per mission.

The workforce argument has grounding. The Government Accountability Office (GAO) in 2012 said the 2010 NASA Authorization Act directed the agency to leverage Space Shuttle and Constellation investments and workforce for SLS.

The NASA Office of Inspector General (OIG) later said that mandate led the agency to retain Shuttle-era systems, infrastructure and contracts.

Legacy SLS Costs Face Renewed Scrutiny

That legacy approach has drawn cost scrutiny. NASA OIG said NASA underestimated the complexity of adapting heritage engines and boosters, while GAO identified Boeing Co.’s (NYSE:BA) core-stage contract as cost-plus-award-fee.

Musk previously reacted to a NASA OIG estimate that the Artemis IV mobile launcher could cost $2.7 billion.

The parent post contrasted SLS with Space Exploration Technologies Corp.’s (NASDAQ:SPCX) reusable Falcon Heavy.

SpaceX says Falcon Heavy can carry 63.8 metric tons to low Earth orbit, while NASA lists SLS Block 1 at 95 metric tons to low Earth orbit and more than 27 metric tons toward the Moon. The vehicles are not directly equivalent.

NASA Shifts Artemis Toward Commercial Systems

However, policy is shifting. The Trump administration’s fiscal 2026 NASA budget proposal calls for an "orderly phase out" of SLS after Artemis III and commercial transportation services for later Artemis missions.

The proposed shift toward commercial systems was part of a broader NASA overhaul.

NASA is still pressing ahead. Artemis II carried astronauts around the Moon in April, and NASA is assembling the Artemis III vehicle for a 2027 crewed demonstration mission in low Earth orbit before a planned Artemis IV lunar landing in 2028.

Child among four killed by Ukrainian drone attacks – Russian governor

9 Sep, 2026 06:49 | Updated 9 Sep, 2026 07:50

The raid also left 29 people injured in the key Russian Black Sea port of Novorossiysk, according to officials

Four people, including a child, were killed overnight in Ukrainian drone attacks on the Russian Black Sea port city of Novorossiysk, Krasnodar Region Governor Veniamin Kondratyev has said.

Another 29 people were injured across the city, the official said on Wednesday morning. Three of the victims are in a serious condition, he added.

Novorossiysk is a key hub for Russian maritime trade, which Kiev has been trying to disrupt with regular long-range attacks on ships and port infrastructure.

Kondratyev stressed that only civilian sites were targeted by Ukrainian forces.

A church and a kindergarten were damaged, as well as three private homes and five apartment blocks, he reported. Ukrainian strikes also damaged homes in the resort town of Anapa, located some 40 km northwest of Novorossiysk.

Gelendzhik, another resort town in Krasnodar Region to the southeast of Novorossiysk, came under what Mayor Aleksey Bogodistov described as a “most massive and lengthy” drone raid. He did not report any casualties.

Russian air defenses intercepted 596 Ukrainian drones in 12 hours overnight into Wednesday, the Defense Ministry said.

In June, Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky ordered mass attacks on Russian ships, which was part of Kiev’s bid to cause more economic damage.

Moscow responded to Zelensky’s “40-day pressure campaign” by ramping up its own long-range strikes, leaving Ukraine effectively cut off from maritime trade.

On Tuesday, Zelensky reiterated his calls for a pause in hostilities in the Black Sea, claiming it would come as a relief for the entire world. Both nations are major exporters of wheat, a key food commodity.

A Türkiye-mediated agreement that ensured free shipping in the Black Sea and provided for inspections of incoming cargo ships to ensure that they were not carrying weapons existed in the early phase of the conflict.

Moscow ultimately pulled out of the deal after accusing Kiev of using designated safe routes to launch naval kamikaze drones at Russian ports.

Zelenskyy’s plane narrowly escapes drone collision en route to Oslo — Norwegian PM

September 9, 2026, 11:24 AM

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s plane nearly struck a drone while taking off from Moldova on the way to Oslo, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre said on Sept. 9.

Støre made the comments in an interview with Norwegian broadcaster NRK.

“His plane was almost hit by a drone as it was taking off from Moldova,” Støre said.

“That is the reality in which the Ukrainian president lives.”

Zelenskyy traveled to Norway to attend the funeral of King Harald V and hold talks with Støre. The two leaders met twice within 24 hours: Tuesday and again Wednesday morning.

The Norwegian PM said Zelenskyy still did not get enough sleep during the visit. He spent the night monitoring his phone and receiving updates about where Russian missiles had struck.

Støre said the experience had made a strong impression on him, highlighting the scale of the crisis in which his Ukrainian counterpart lives.

Zelenskyy said Sunday that he planned to travel to Norway and Canada to discuss ballistic missile defense. He said Ukraine’s ballistic missile defense capabilities remained a weak point and that Kyiv wanted to develop its own system.

IAEA board draws a line under past Syrian nuclear activities, says outstanding questions resolved

In a confidential report to member states last week, the IAEA said it had resolved all its questions on the outstanding issues regarding Syria that it had originally reported to the board.

The United Nations nuclear watchdog's 35-nation Board of Governors passed a resolution on Wednesday drawing a line under Syria's secret nuclear activities during the Assad regime, saying the new authorities had helped resolve all outstanding questions.

After Israel struck a site in the eastern province of Deir al-Zor in 2007 that it said was a secret nuclear reactor near completion, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) demanded Syria come clean on its nuclear activities, which it did not do.

Middle East on brink of World War III, warns Iranian lawmaker among escalating tensions - report

While Iran has flirted with reconciliation with the US at times, it has also sought to position itself alongside countries that want a new world order.

Iranian lawmaker Kamran Ghazanfari said that the region is “practically on the brink of World War III.”

The report of his comments appeared in Iran International. Ghazanfari has been known for some outlandish claims. For instance, he claimed in the past that Iran’s president Ebrahim Raisi was assassinated by Israel and its allies in 2024.

The Ghazanfari comments are interesting because they likely illustrate how some of Iran’s more extremist politicians and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) elites view the war. They see it as a regional and global conflict.

Taoiseach says gardaí prepared for Trump visit in wake of reported drone sighting

Wed Sept 09 2026 - 18:56

Defence analyst Declan Power says reported drone over Irish Sea would be ‘classic example of hybrid warfare’

An investigation into the reported sighting of a large unauthorised drone at 6,000ft near the flight path of commercial aircraft off Co Wicklow will attempt to determine whether any such unmanned aerial vehicles were in fact in the area at the time.

Though the sighting is being taken seriously, Garda sources said the primary goal of the inquiry was to test the accuracy of the report.

It will also seek to rule out the possibility a drone was being flown as part of US security preparations ahead of the visit to Ireland this weekend of US president Donald Trump. However, sources said that was unlikely.

They also said that if someone was flying a drone, potentially including on behalf of a bad actor or rogue state, and wanted it to be seen, the location of the reported sighting would not be an obvious choice.

The report was made by an Aer Lingus pilot in a propeller aircraft approaching Dublin Airport at about 5.20pm on Tuesday. He said the drone was about 3km to the aircraft’s left side as he was flying into Dublin from Cornwall.

The pilot said the drone was about 10 miles from a navigation point near Howth in north Co Dublin, which would put it somewhere off the Co Wicklow coast.

The exchange between the pilot and Dublin Air Traffic Control was clipped and shared online by aviation enthusiasts before being reported by the media.

Garda sources stressed there was no question over the bona fides or competency of the pilot in question. However, many recent drone sightings in Europe have either been discounted or remained unproven.

Garda headquarters said it was aware of the reported sighting and was continuing to investigate it, alongside the Department of Defence and Defence Forces.

AirNav, a State-owned company that provides air traffic control services to Irish airports, confirmed a report of a drone sighting had been made.

“In line with our normal safety procedures, a safety report was filed, and the sighting was reported to An Garda Síochána,” it said.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin said procurement of offshore counter-drone technology was “being pursued”.

Speaking after the reported sighting, he said “a lot of preparatory work” had been undertaken on counter-drone capabilities in advance of the Trump visit, with An Garda Síochána having “resourced the situation very significantly” in relation to on-land capability.

However, he added: “There is more to do offshore, and that work is under way.” Martin urged caution and stressed the reported sighting was “unverified at the moment”.

The Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) confirmed there were no authorised civilian drone operations in the area at the time of the reported sighting.

Air traffic controllers had at the time asked pilots of aircraft in the general area whether they had also caught sight of the object. None reported that they had, according to recordings reviewed by The Irish Times.

“We’ve no radar return down there and nothing that we’re aware of in the area,” an air traffic controller told one aircraft. “So, just keep your eyes out there, would you mind?”

Security and defence analyst Declan Power said the reported sighting would be a classic example of hybrid warfare. Power said it would be difficult to prove from which location, or by whom, the drone had been launched.

“It’s hard to detect. In some respects, you could argue that the drone nearly wanted to be seen where and when it was flying,” he told Newstalk Breakfast.

“So it’s a classic example of hybrid warfare, where it’s causing an impact without any particular comeback for whoever launched it.”

In a high-profile drone incident in December 2025, drones were spotted flying near Dublin during the visit of Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskiy.

After the incident, European Council president António Costa expressed his “full confidence” in Ireland’s ability to deal with security threats.

He called the drone incident a “hybrid attack” from Russia.

“What happened last week here in Dublin is another example of the hybrid attacks from Russia, and the hybrid threats from Russia to the European territory,” he said.

After Russian ambassador to Ireland Yury Filatov denied Russia was involved in the incident, the Taoiseach said: “I don’t share his views.”

At the time, Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan insisted additional security measures for drones would be in place for Ireland’s EU presidency.

The reported drone incident on Tuesday came just after the conclusion of a meeting of EU agriculture ministers in Dublin.

Aer Lingus and the Irish Coast Guard have been contacted for comment.

Drone intrusion temporarily shuts Taichung air base

Thu, Sep 10, 2026

An unauthorized drone intrusion over Ching Chuan Kang Air Base (清泉崗基地) at Taichung International Airport on Tuesday night forced the temporary closure of the base, diverting eight fighter jets and delaying a commercial flight, authorities said.

Air Force Command Headquarters said that clear weather had allowed for scheduled night training exercises, but after a drone was spotted entering the airspace, the control tower declared an emergency closure of the airport, forcing eight Indigenous Defense Fighter jets in the air to divert and land at Hsinchu Air Base (新竹基地).

Taichung airport director Chang Jui-shu (張瑞澍) said the airspace intrusion lasted from 7:37pm to 8:02pm.

The closure forced a passenger flight arriving from Macau to circle the airport before it was allowed to land, Chang said.

After airport operations personnel spotted the drone, the military immediately notified the Taichung Police Department’s Cingshuei Precinct, which dispatched officers to search the affected area in Sishih Borough (西勢), police said.

Officers did not find the drone or its operator, but remained on standby in the area until the military issued an all-clear, police said, adding that patrols would be increased to track down the suspect.

The air force has handed the case over to the Aviation Police Bureau for further investigation.

The bureau’s Taichung station said that flying a drone within the airport’s 2.6km restricted no-fly zone carries a heavy penalty.

Violators could have their drone operator license revoked and be fined NT$300,000 to NT$1.5 million (US$9,522 to US$47,611) by the Civil Aeronautics Administration, in addition to having their equipment confiscated, police said.

Responding to criticism that the air force did not employ anti-drone defenses, Taiwan Association for Security and Development chairman Chi Tung-yun (紀東昀) said that while all military airports in Taiwan are equipped with anti-drone systems developed by National Chungshan Institute of Science and Technology, the “soft-kill” technology is limited to the confines of the airport.

As the drone in this incident was operating near a flight path outside the base, the military should expand the deployment of anti-drone systems to include restricted safety zones along surrounding flight paths, he said.

Taiwan should catch up with the latest technology in the US, where airports have the ability to shoot down drones with lasers, Chi added.

Taliban Claim to Have Acquired Anti-Drone Systems

September 9, 2026

The Taliban claim to have acquired anti-drone systems and plan to begin installing and operating the systems in Kandahar province.

Sources told the Hasht-e Subh Daily on Wednesday, September 9, that a delegation from the Taliban’s Ministry of Defense, led by Abdul Latif Hakimi, the ministry’s chief inspector, had traveled to Kandahar and visited and assessed the group’s 205th Corps.

According to the sources, the delegation examined suitable locations for installing anti-drone systems at the 205th Corps and in Spin Boldak district.

The sources added that the systems are intended to prevent Pakistani drones from operating in border areas. The Taliban also claimed that the deployment would be expanded to other border areas of Afghanistan after Kandahar.

The Taliban’s remarks about efforts to strengthen their air defense capabilities come as the group still does not have a complete radar network for monitoring and controlling foreign aircraft.

Physicist, former NASA researcher takes UAP seriously | Reality Check

Updated: Sep 8, 2026 / 12:38 PM CDT

In this episode of “Reality Check,” recorded at the Scientific Coalition for UAP Studies conference in Toronto, Ross Coulthart sits down with professor Kevin Knuth, the University at Albany SUNY physicist and former NASA Ames researcher.

His 2019 peer-reviewed paper in the journal Entropy estimated the 2004 Nimitz Tic-Tac at thousands of G with no sonic boom, no exhaust and no heat signature.

Knuth opens with the anomalous experiences that shaped him long before physics, from a childhood intuition on a Wisconsin bench seat to the night he and his toddler son both saw a boy standing at a bedroom gate in their Albany home.

The conversation moves through the 1988 Montana cattle mutilations, the Malmstrom missile shutdowns and Knuth’s own hypothesis for how a craft warping spacetime could knock out an ICBM’s navigation system, and his account that AARO had a copy of his paper two months before Sean Kirkpatrick told the Senate no such peer-reviewed work existed.

He describes sonar data from a New Zealand Navy frigate showing an 800-foot object closing 2.5 kilometers in 25 seconds underwater, the UAPx sensor network now deploying radar and RF spectrum analysis in Connecticut, and the limits already placed on the new UAP Science Advisory Council, which has been told it will see only unclassified material. Asked what he wants most, Knuth says he would like to stand inside one of these crafts, and he has spoken with people who say it’s possible.

Why Peter Diamandis Thinks UAPs May Be Watching Nuclear Sites and the Rise of Artificial Superintelligence

09 September 2026, 4:02 PM BST

Tech entrepreneur is urging scientists to take UAP evidence more seriously, linking reports about nuclear sites and future super-intelligent AI to new briefings within US intelligence

Peter Diamandis has urged scientists and policymakers to take UAPs and the possibility of non-human intelligence seriously, arguing in a 7 September Substack post that mounting evidence and growing government attention warrant closer scrutiny.

The XPRIZE founder, who also co‑founded the International Space University and asteroid‑mining venture Planetary Resources, has long framed himself as neither a UFO believer nor a hardened sceptic.

He stresses that he has never seen a UFO, and that his sharper tone is driven by whistleblower testimony, briefings reported from inside government and what he regards as a gradual shift of the UAP question from the conspiratorial fringe into more respectable rooms.

In his Metatrends newsletter essay, titled The Evidence Around UAPs Is Getting Harder to Ignore: A Serious Look at Non-Human Intelligence, Diamandis writes that 'there is evidence mounting, and it has been significant enough that it has captured my attention.'

The wording is careful. He does not say alien craft are in the skies, but he is clearly irritated by the urge to write the whole thing off as tinfoil‑hat stuff before anyone has gone through the data properly.

Peter Diamandis Flags UAP Council Meeting Inside US Intelligence

After a meeting on 31 August at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, where members of the UAP Science Advisory Council were briefed on the state of government thinking.

According to Diamandis, citing council member Jennice Vilhauer, the council was told that the US government has a 'preparedness plan in place' should non‑human intelligence ever be confirmed. What that plan would involve in practice was not spelt out.

To recall, the UAP Science Advisory Council is chaired by Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb, who was asked by representatives of the ODNI and the Pentagon's AARO office to assemble and lead a scientific group to support their work.

Loeb also heads the privately funded Galileo Project, which seeks to study UAPs using scientific instruments and systematic data collection rather than anecdotal stories alone.

Diamandis cites Galileo alongside NASA's UAP Independent Study Team and research by Stanford professor Garry Nolan into reported neurological changes among people who say they have experienced UAP encounters as signs that the subject is receiving greater institutional attention.

NASA, for its part, has been explicit that its work should not be read as backing an extraterrestrial explanation. The agency says it has no data showing that UAPs are evidence of alien technologies and has stressed the need for better‑quality observations before any firm scientific conclusions can be drawn.

He also points to a growing lineup of whistleblowers, including former intelligence officer David Grusch and former Pentagon official Luis Elizondo, both of whom have publicly claimed that the US government possesses information about UAPs that has not been fully disclosed.

Their allegations have helped push the issue into congressional hearings and cable news, even if solid documentation in the public domain remains limited.

In Diamandis' view, the number of senior military, intelligence and scientific figures now talking about UAPs 'must count for something.'

It is not a single smoking‑gun incident that worries him, but what he sees as a cumulative weight of testimony, paperwork and political attention that at least deserves a calm look.

>>25021556

Diamandis also cites President Donald Trump and Senator Marco Rubio, who have publicly discussed UAP claims and the need to examine what officials and witnesses have reported.

IBTimes UK has not independently verified the allegations made by whistleblowers or the claims concerning non‑human intelligence, and presents them here as the assertions of the individuals involved.

Nuclear Sites, Artificial Super Intelligence and the UAP Question

Diamandis is not simply cataloguing strange sightings. He tries to slot them into the broader story of human technology, comparing the nuclear age with what he calls the dawn of artificial super intelligence, or ASI.

Diamandis points to reported UAP incidents associated with sensitive nuclear facilities, including Los Alamos, Hanford, Oak Ridge and Malmstrom Air Force Base, as well as accounts involving Soviet nuclear sites.

The underlying reports vary in quality and are often disputed, but Diamandis argues that the apparent clustering is at least intriguing enough to warrant structured study rather than late‑night pub speculation.

He then looks forward to ASI, which he describes as a technology that could 'alter the trajectory of civilisation,' either through 'destruction or transcendence.'

In his telling, nuclear weapons and future super‑intelligent AI systems sit together as moments when our species could radically reshape, or wreck, its own environment.

Diamandis then poses a hypothetical question. If non‑human intelligence were observing humanity, would nuclear weapons and advanced AI be the technologies most likely to attract its attention?

He stresses that this is a thought experiment, not a claim that such observers definitely exist, and notes that correlations between UAP reports and nuclear facilities do not prove causation.

No proof shows that extraterrestrials are watching missile fields or data centres, and Diamandis does not pretend otherwise.

IBTimes UK has not independently verified the whistleblowers' allegations or the claims about non-human intelligence. They are presented here as allegations or claims by the individuals cited.

The idea has nonetheless cropped up in online discussions that connect UAP narratives to debates about advanced AI, with some people treating it as a dark joke and others taking it unnervingly seriously.

It is one of those mad intersections of internet culture and high‑stakes technology that is hard to ignore once you have seen it.

Peter Diamandis Calls for Science, Not Faith

The Galileo Project, NASA's UAP Independent Study Team and Nolan's research are central to Diamandis' claim that UAP work is no longer confined to the fringes.

These efforts seek to improve the quality of available data and apply scientific methods to a field that has historically relied heavily on anecdotal reports and low‑quality imagery.

Still, he is openly frustrated by what he sees as a false binary between 'believers' and 'debunkers.' Both camps, he argues, often treat their positions as articles of faith. The result is a lot of noise, not much signal.

'I am not asking you to believe. I am asking you to look,' he writes in the closing lines of his 7 September post. The point is disarmingly simple. Strip away the memes and the Hollywood saucers, treat UAP reports as anomalous data, and then see where careful analysis actually leads.

Whether more researchers will take up that approach remains to be seen. Funding is tight, reputational risk is real, and the evidence base is messy at best.

For now, Diamandis' intervention mainly shows how questions about UAPs are starting to be discussed alongside broader arguments over nuclear risk, emerging technology and the future of artificial intelligence, which is already a wild enough mix on its own.

Is the Government Hiding Aliens? Harvard Expert Claims 'We Are Being Spun' on Unacknowledged UFO Data

09 September 2026, 2:36 PM BST

A Harvard-linked expert claims the US has a plan to confirm alien life, raising questions about UFO disclosure

A member of a scientific council advising US government agencies on UFO and UAP matters says the United States has a preparedness plan in place should the existence of non-human intelligence ever be confirmed.

Dr Jennice Vilhauer, a clinical psychologist on the UAP Science Advisory Council, said officials informed the panel about the 'preparedness plan' during an in-person meeting at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence in Washington on 31 August.

The advisory council was announced in June under the leadership of Harvard astrophysicist Professor Avi Loeb, who has urged caution around UAP and warned against shooting at unidentified 'orbs' for fear of provoking a response.

The panel brings together data analysts, statisticians, oceanographers, biologists and anthropologists to examine Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena from a scientific angle, and last week's session marked its first face-to-face consultation.

UFO Disclosure and the US Government's First Contact Planning

Dr Vilhauer wrote in a Substack post that officials did not share details of the plan but said the United States was ready to assume an international leadership role and co-ordinate with other countries in the event of an extraterrestrial disclosure.

'It does mean that the possibility of confirming NHI has been taken seriously enough to warrant advance planning,' she said.

'That alone is significant because it means that the United States government has considered the possibility that such a confirmation could occur and it has determined that the consequences would be substantial enough to require a coordinated response.'

She stressed that a preparedness plan is not evidence that non-human intelligence exists. 'It is evidence that the United States government considers that if it were to be confirmed, the impact would be consequential enough to prepare for,' Dr Vilhauer wrote.

The claim has not been independently confirmed by the ODNI or another federal agency in a publicly available statement, and details about which agencies developed the plan, what it contains and what would trigger it remain undisclosed.

None of these claims has been independently verified. IBTimes UK has not seen documentation confirming the existence or contents of the reported preparedness plan.

Harvard Expert Says 'We Are Being Spun' on UFO Data

Public reaction to the panel has ranged from scepticism to belief that humanity may be on the verge of a major discovery. Eric Weinstein, who holds a PhD from Harvard University, wrote on X: 'We are being spun on UFOs by the US Government.

I don't know about aliens. Or craft. I believe what we can say is that there are 'Waived Unacknowledged Special Access Programs' related to UAP that are behaving very very very strangely.'

Peter H Diamandis, founder and chairman of the XPrize, added in an essay posted on X: 'I am not asking you to believe. I am asking you to look… The question is not whether this is real. The question is whether we are ready to take it seriously.'

There is little public information outside science fiction that has seriously examined the societal impact of first contact with an extraterrestrial species.

In 1989, the International Academy of Astronautics adopted a declaration of principles on 'activities following the detection of extraterrestrial intelligence,' suggesting that any signal should first be shared with the UN secretary-general and international astronomical bodies.

'No response to a signal or other evidence of extraterrestrial intelligence should be sent until appropriate international consultations have taken place,' the declaration reads.

Those guidelines were updated in 2010, with a further 2026 update approved by the IAA SETI Committee earlier this year.

In July, Dr Vilhauer and two members of a separate Disclosure Foundation board wrote a paper urging the creation of a US National Disclosure Preparedness Task Force, to be created by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr.

That panel would assess the psychological preparedness of society for first contact and collaborate with an existing ODNI panel governing UAP disclosure.

'The potential implications of UAP disclosure involving NHI are, by definition, civilizational,' they wrote. 'They have the potential to affect national security, international diplomacy, economics, anthropology, religion, education, and public health simultaneously.'

They argued a national disclosure plan should address planned disclosures, mass UAP sightings and 'information suggesting benign, unknown, or threatening intent.'

The language reflects how seriously some researchers and policymakers are treating the possibility of UAP disclosure. However, the central question remains unanswered: is there anything out there to contact in the first place?

George Clinton Says A UFO Like Light Struck His Car, The Hours That Disappeared Still Have No Explanation

September 8, 2026

The funk legend says a mysterious encounter involving strange lights left him convinced something happened during several unexplained hours.

George Clinton has spent decades taking fans into outer space through his music, but the funk legend says one alien experience may have been much more than part of the Parliament Funkadelic mythology.

During a September 8 appearance on “The Breakfast Club,” Clinton opened up about his belief in extraterrestrial life and recalled a bizarre encounter involving unexplained lights, a car, and what he believes may have been several hours of missing time.

The official show page confirms Clinton joined the program to discuss Parliament Funkadelic, Afrofuturism, Prince, artificial intelligence and the legacy of Dr. Funkenstein.

Clinton told the hosts that his fascination with spaceships stretches back to childhood, but he made it clear that his beliefs are also connected to something he says he personally experienced.

“I’m one of the ones that actually believed that type of stuff. I’m totally convinced of that.”

According to Clinton’s account on The Breakfast Club, he was riding in a car with Bootsy Collins when a strange light appeared from the sky.

Clinton stressed that drugs were not responsible for what they witnessed. “We riding down the street, wasn’t even getting high either.”

Clinton said the light initially appeared in broad daylight before another burst came through the trees. He described what happened next in vivid detail.

“So we actually saw the light come down out of clear daylight like a laser out of the clouds, hit the ground.”

During the interview, Clinton said another light eventually struck the vehicle and appeared to move across its surface. The George Clinton alien experience became even stranger when he began describing what happened with time.

Clinton said he and his companion eventually arrived home and noticed street lights were on, even though the encounter had started during daylight hours. Someone at the house was also preparing to go to bed.

According to Clinton, neither man recognized the apparent time discrepancy until roughly a decade later. “There was some time missing.”

Clinton said the realization made the experience even harder to explain. He also admitted that he avoided discussing it publicly because of how easily people could dismiss the story.

“I never wanted to talk about it because you sound stupid and everybody knew we was getting high.”

When a host suggested hypnosis could potentially uncover memories of an alien abduction, Clinton appeared open to the possibility but had no interest in digging any deeper.

“I’m pretty sure that would happen too, but I ain’t trying to find out that that much.”

The cosmic conversation is fitting for an artist whose career has long blended funk with science fiction imagery.

According to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Clinton was inducted alongside Parliament Funkadelic in 1997, cementing the collective’s place among music’s most influential innovators.

Whether Clinton experienced something extraterrestrial remains impossible to verify from his account alone. What is clear from his Breakfast Club interview is that decades later, he still believes something unexplained happened during those missing hours.

Spielberg’s ‘Disclosure Day’ Brings Its Alien Mystery to Peacock in October (disclosure peacocking in October?)

September 9, 2026, 12:45 pm ET

Emily Blunt, Josh O'Connor, Colman Domingo, and Colin Firth star in the latest sci-fi tale from the blockbuster director.

If you skipped Disclosure Day when it played in theaters—maybe Project Hail Mary was your chosen very long sci-fi movie of the season—your chance to catch it on streaming will soon be here.

And better still, if you did watch Steven Spielberg’s latest extraterrestrial tale earlier this year, it’s an opportunity to go back over some of its more puzzling choices with the ability to rewind at will.

Emily Blunt and Josh O’Connor co-star as strangers with a cosmic connection that’s not at all apparent at the start of the film.

She’s hoping to level up from Kansas City weather girl to serious news anchor, a goal disrupted when she starts chattering in an unearthly language while live on the air; he’s just absconded with top-secret material from the shady government contractor he worked for until very recently.

Elsewhere, we meet characters played by Colman Domingo (good guy), Colin Firth (bad guy), Eve Hewson (good girlfriend), and Wyatt Russell (bad boyfriend).

As far as Spielberg’s alien epics go, Disclosure Day doesn’t capture the frightening but irresistible allure of Close Encounters of the Third Kind, nor the wonder or pathos of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial—but it’s more on the emotional wavelength of those films than his action-oriented take on War of the Worlds.

You can make up your own mind when it hits Peacock on October 9—and ponder just how many attempts you would need to smash an iPhone, or why a seemingly limitless piece of alien tech can do everything except turn invisible, while you’re at it.

The Search for Extraterrestrial Life and Death

September 9, 2026

Jewish mothers are known for inciting a sense of guilt in their children.

A popular tale holds it that after a Jewish mother was disappointed by the career accomplishments of her 36-year-old child, she complained: “By your age, Mozart did not only compose over 50 symphonies, but he even managed to die!”

The simplest assumption in physics is that similar circumstances lead to similar outcomes.

It is therefore reasonable to assume that many intelligent species may have lived throughout cosmic history on the surface of Earth-like exoplanets which are positioned at a similar distance from Sun-like stars.

By the present technological age of humanity, the most advanced among them did not only accomplish much more in interstellar travel than humanity did but they even managed to die!

The technological products that space faring civilizations left behind outlive them, just like Mozart’s symphonies. It makes more sense to these even more than to search for their fleeting radio signals, which by now are long gone.

The duration of the radio transmission lifetime is a key inhibitor in the likelihood of detecting an extraterrestrial radio communication signal based on the Drake equation.

The equivalent equation for spacecraft that are bound by gravity to the Milky-Way, sums the reservoir of technological relics. These interstellar objects accumulate over time, just like messages inside bottles traveling through the ocean of interstellar space.

The number of such messages in a bottle that reach our shores on Earth depends on whether Earth was targeted deliberately as an interesting destination.

It also depends on whether any historical civilization out there produced self-replicated messengers. Dandelion flowers spread their genetic code in seeds that reproduce them when they land on fertile grounds after being carried by the wind.

If nature manages to do it, surely synthetic biology or pure technology can manufacture such behavior by design. The carriers of these seeds could be interstellar objects that enter planetary systems nearly aligned with the orbital plane of the planets, as 3I/ATLAS did.

Whether the passages of interstellar objects in our past resulted in seeding the Earth with technological probes remains to be checked experimentally.

This requires serious scientific work, not emotional tweets on social media.

The five tranches of data released by over the past four months in the Presidential Unsealing and Reporting System for UAP Encounters (PURSUE) describe mysterious orbs and triangular-shaped objects as Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP).

Whether all of them represent human-made technologies or some are messages in bottles from interstellar space will be decided through the scientific investigation conducted by the UAP Science Advisory Council (https://uapsac.com/).

Dogmatists argue that all UAP must be human-made, because this is the familiar paradigm that they followed throughout their career.

The situation is similar to mainstream comet experts who argued here that the anomalous interstellar object Oumuamua — which showed substantial non-gravitational acceleration without any outgassing, as summarized here, must be adark comet’ with an invisible coma and tail.

Surely, there are comets which shed a tiny amount of gas and dust so that their coma and tail reflect sunlight at a faint level that is difficult to detect. However, if `Oumuamua was a comet — it had to lose about a tenth of its mass in order to gain its observed non-gravitational acceleration.

Such a massive loss would have been difficult to miss near Earth for an iceberg of order a hundred meters in length, roughly the size of a football field.

Stating that `Oumuamua has an invisible tail is like saying “the emperor has invisible clothes” with an authority that is likely false or empty, but people collectively pretend otherwise out of fear, conformity, or self-interest.

It highlights a state of collective denial or groupthink that could be suddenly shattered when someone has the courage to state the obvious truth. Gladly, whether we have had neighbors will not be settled by the consensus of comet experts but rather by scientific evidence.

In Hans Christian Andersen’s 1837 tale, two swindlers convince a vain emperor they’re weaving him a magnificent robe visible only to the wise and competent, and anyone who can’t see it must be a fool or unfit for their position.

The emperor, his ministers, and the whole town play along, praising fabric that doesn’t exist, because admitting they see nothing would mean admitting inadequacy. It takes a child, with no stake in social performance, to simply say what’s true: “he has nothing on.”

I follow that child in real life and do not care about what my Jewish mother would have advised about the risk to my career from saying that. Life is short and we better focus on substance.

Navy Pilot Alex Dietrich: “We Genuinely Don’t Know What It Was” | Tic Tac UFO | Ep 781

September 8, 2026

One of the most important interviews ever presented on Podcast UFO, host Martin Willis sits down with former U.S. Navy F/A-18 pilot Alex Dietrich for a candid discussion of the November 14, 2004 Tic Tac UFO encounter involving the USS Nimitz Carrier Strike Group.

Dietrich describes how an otherwise routine training mission suddenly changed when her flight was redirected by the USS Princeton to investigate an unidentified contact.

She recalls the disturbance in the ocean, the moment the white Tic Tac-shaped object entered her field of view and the confusion of watching it react to Commander David Fravor’s aircraft.

“We weren’t supposed to be there,” Dietrich explains. “What the hell is this thing? Where did it come from? What is it doing? How is it doing that? Is it a threat?”

Flying high cover during the encounter, Dietrich found herself fascinated and unnerved. The aircrew were unarmed, the object could not be identified and no one knew what it was capable of doing.

Years later, after questioning whether they might have been unknowingly sent into a secret American test, she says she was repeatedly reassured that the object was not a U.S. system, that no submarine was operating in the area and that there was no evidence of American or allied activity responsible for what they witnessed.

Dietrich also discusses the troubling absence of an immediate formal investigation. No specialized reporting system, debriefing procedure or UAP investigative infrastructure existed for the aircrews at the time.

When she was eventually questioned at the Pentagon years later, details had already begun to fade.

The conversation goes far beyond the mechanics of the encounter.

Dietrich explains why she does not consider herself a whistleblower, how her identity became public after information from the case appeared online, why she resisted media attention and what finally persuaded her to appear on 60 Minutes.

She speaks about the ridicule experienced by military witnesses, the need to examine extraordinary reports without automatically embracing or dismissing them and the importance of treating experiencers with dignity.

Her position remains neutral: she does not claim to know what the Tic Tac was, but she believes unexplained objects in controlled military and civilian airspace deserve serious, scientifically responsible investigation.

The Tic Tac encounter from one of its principal eyewitnesses, told with honesty, and extraordinary clarity.
