Jacob Coxon, who has worked in recent years doing research at the firms OpenAI and Anthropic, said in a series of posts on X that neither company is acting responsibly as they move toward what he described as superintelligent AI that is capable of self-improvement.

"Do not underestimate the power of this technology. These will soon be superhuman systems that can hack anything, revolutionize any field overnight, and acquire real power and resources. We have all witnessed the progress in each of these domains, and progress is not slowing," Coxon said.

"The people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade. This is not a marketing stunt. If anything, many executives and senior researchers will couch their phrasing in the press to sound sensible - but I hear the same people express fear privately. No other human activity poses this level of danger."

Coxon said a common response to such warnings is, if company leaders believe in the dangers, why are they still building the superintelligent AI? He said that at OpenAI, many there "have not deeply internalized the civilizational stakes." At Anthropic, according to Coxon, "the stakes are well-understood, but they are locked in a race to get there first - they believe no one else will act responsibly, so they must do it themselves, despite the risk."

US Officials Threaten Retaliation Against UK Over Israeli Settlements Sanctions

US officials have attacked the UK over its new trade sanctions on illegal Israeli settlements, amid speculation that Washington could publicly rebuke the British government.

On Tuesday morning, US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee suggested the Trump administration could retaliate against Britain over its new trade sanctions on illegal Israeli settlements.

Meanwhile, Florida Republican Congressman Randy Fine warned that British companies could be stopped from doing business in Florida, accusing the UK of a "vanity project in support of Muslim terror".

Huckabee told the BBC that the UK's planned ban on Israeli settlement goods would be a "discrimination against the Jewish people". He suggested US states, specifically Florida, could take trade action against Britain.

Over the weekend the ambassador had accused the British government of "Jew hate" in response to criticisms of Israel's actions in Gaza by British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband, who is himself Jewish.

Congressman Randy Fine warned on Monday night: "As the British government considers forcing British companies to boycott portions of Israel, it should be aware that a Florida law that I passed as a member of the Legislature would ban any British company forced to comply from doing business with any state or local government in Florida."

Washington could help bring the Ukraine conflict to an end sooner by stopping all assistance to Kiev, Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov has said, commenting on the latest phone call between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Donald Trump.

The two leaders spoke by phone on Tuesday in the wake of a new round of shuttle diplomacy that saw Trump’s envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner visit Moscow and Kiev over the weekend.

The issue came up as the two presidents discussed ways to reach a settlement of the conflict, Ushakov told journalist Pavel Zarubin on Wednesday. Asked what Washington could do to bring the hostilities to an end sooner, the Kremlin aide said that “first and foremost, [it could] probably stop providing any assistance to Kiev.”

The official acknowledged that US assistance to Ukraine had already “declined significantly” since Trump returned to the White House, compared with the previous administration, when military aid “was provided on a massive scale.”

The two presidents also discussed resuming talks with the Ukrainian side, including in trilateral format that would include the US mediators, Ushakov added.

Moscow has repeatedly said it is ready to settle the Ukraine conflict as long as its root causes are addressed and the realities on the ground are taken into account.

Russia’s demands include Ukraine abandoning its plans to join NATO and adopting neutral status, accepting restrictions on its armed forces, and formally recognizing Crimea and four other former Ukrainian regions as Russian territory. Crimea voted to join Russia shortly after the 2014 Western-backed coup in Kiev. Donetsk, Lugansk, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions held similar referendums in September 2022.

Kiev has consistently rejected Moscow’s demands on territorial and security issues, insisting on restoring control over all territories it lays claim to and joining NATO.

Moscow has repeatedly cited Kiev’s aggressive posture, as well as the position of its European backers as major obstacles to a peace settlement.

On Tuesday, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that the several European leaders calling for a ceasefire were actually seeking to preserve an “openly Russophobic and aggressive neo-Nazi regime” in Kiev, adding that the Russian people would never accept this outcome.

Bangkok has threatened indiscriminate deportation for foreign troublemakers, after meeting the Jewish state’s envoy

Israel must do more to explain to its nationals how they are expected to behave in Thailand, according to remarks by Bangkok’s foreign minister, Sihasak Phuangketkeow.

Sihasak, who also serves as deputy prime minister, met Israeli Ambassador Alona Fisher-Kamm on Tuesday following a series of scandalous and potentially criminal incidents involving Israeli nationals that have stirred tensions in Thailand.

“Thailand is a country that welcomes tourists. But welcoming tourists does not mean that visitors, regardless of nationality, can do whatever they want in Thailand,” the minister told the press. “Visitors must understand and respect Thai culture and traditions,” just as Thai tourists must when traveling abroad.

Fisher-Kamm, who indicated ahead of the meeting that she wanted to raise concerns about growing hostility toward Israelis and Jews in Thailand, described the discussion with Sihasak as “good and open” and said it touched on “close cooperation in agriculture, labour, healthcare, and cybersecurity.”

A Secretive DHS ‘Predictive Policing’ Unit is Analyzing Americans’ Financial Habits and Pulling Them Over

Border Patrol is running secretive predictive policing units that analyze Americans’ financial activity and other data, then feed that intelligence to local police who pull people over who are not suspected of any specific crime, but which the government thinks may be worth searching, 404 Media has found.

The units, the name of which 404 Media is revealing here for the first time, are called Predictive Intelligence Targeting Teams (PITT). In one case, a PITT analyzed the financial activity of a man who was driving across Montana, and local authorities stopped him under the pretense of an obstructed license plate and charged him with a DUI.

404 Media identified one PITT in the Spokane Sector, Washington, which polices the U.S. border with Canada, and another in the Laredo Sector, Texas, which polices the border with Mexico. The findings add to an Associated Press investigation from last year which found Border Patrol was using automatic license plate readers (ALPRs) as part of the same wide-spanning predictive policing program.

“The bottom line is genuine probable cause cannot be synthetically generated,” Jake Laperruque, deputy director of the Security and Surveillance Project at the Center For Democracy & Technology, told 404 Media in an email. Here Border Patrol seems to be “using parallel construction to cloak the reason behind its car stops in secrecy. If we can't meaningfully review and evaluate these systems, we can't trust them,” he added.

Predictive policing is a highly controversial practice that police departments and federal agencies are increasingly turning to. The practice is designed to find people who may have committed crimes, but at the moment, no evidence of them doing so exists. Broadly, law enforcement may analyze data — such as a person's movements, where they are at a certain time, or the roads they drive — then create or find another pretense to pull them over.

Britain to call veterans back into uniform in huge war mobilisation drill as Russia threat grows

A group from the “strategic reserve” of 95,000 retired troops will be called into action “on a scale we haven’t seen for a long time”, the Armed Forces Minister has said.

A group drawn from the UK’s 95,000-strong “strategic reserve” of former servicemen and women will be mobilised next year in an exercise Armed Forces Minister Louise Sandher-Jones said would take place on a scale not seen for years.

The drill will test whether the Ministry of Defence can find former troops, call them up, equip them and get them ready for service during a crisis, as Britain increasingly prepares for the possibility of a major conflict in Europe.

It comes amid repeated warnings over the threat posed by Russia, with Moscow threatening British defence factories supplying equipment to Ukraine and Western intelligence officials warning that Vladimir Putin’s campaign of sabotage and disruption risks triggering a wider confrontation through miscalculation.

Speaking to the House of Lords national resilience committee, Ms Sandher-Jones said the strategic reserve would now become a much more serious part of Britain’s defence planning.

He leaves out that Israel has govt-funded IVF for women up to age 45 and literally pays parents (including same-sex couples) to have children—choosing to credit their "social fabric" instead.

Of course, he also doesn't mention that all of this is effectively subsidized by US taxpayers through the fungibility of funds (i.e., money they would have to spend on defense they can instead spend on welfare programs like these).
