Triple Planet Alignment, Meteor Shower & Rare Venus Occultation to Light Up September Skies

Forget fireworks the real spectacle this month is happening 150 million kilometres away.
Astronomy expert Prabhakar Dod, head of the Vishwabharati Astronomy Centre, says the night sky is gearing up for a rare cosmic encore, and skywatchers won’t want to miss a single act.
Act One kicks off on September 22, when the Moon, Mercury and Venus huddle together in a glowing evening trio while Mars, Jupiter and Saturn quietly steal the spotlight elsewhere in the sky.
By September 23, the show shifts to before-dawn drama, as the Linosid meteor shower lights up the northeastern horizon in a shimmer of shooting stars.
Then comes the grand finale: on September 24, the Harvest Moon will pull off a stunning vanishing act, gliding directly in front of Venus and blotting it out completely before the planet dramatically re-emerges later that evening, glowing in a delicate crescent shape through a telescope lens.
And the sky isn’t done yet. Saturn is inching closer to Earth than it has in a while, set to hit its closest approach around October 4 gifting stargazers an entire month of unusually clear, close-up views.
With skies finally clearing after days of cloud cover, the cosmos couldn’t have picked a better time to shine.

NASA, IBM Launch AI Foundation Model for Lunar Science

NASA is bringing artificial intelligence to the study of the Moon, helping researchers transform how they analyze the Moon’s surface.
In an ongoing collaboration with IBM Research and several academic institutions, NASA has launched the NASA-IBM Lunar Foundation Model, among the first open-source AI models built specifically for lunar science.
The model, trained primarily on data from NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), is hosted publicly on Hugging Face for anyone to use, with the complete codebase available on GitHub for testing and experimentation.
The NASA-IBM Lunar Foundation Model supports the next generation of lunar science by helping researchers quickly analyze vast quantities of data to better understand the Moon’s surface.
Using the model as a mapping tool, researchers can rapidly develop actionable strategies for evaluating the Moon’s rugged surface, understanding its geological past, and planning future lunar research.
“NASA has spent decades building an extraordinary scientific record of the Moon, but collecting data is only part of the job,” said Kevin Murphy, chief science data officer and acting chief data and AI officer at NASA Headquarters in Washington.
“We also have to make data easier for scientists to explore and use. The NASA-IBM Lunar Foundation Model shows what’s possible when we bring AI to NASA’s petabytes of scientific data. That’s a real opportunity we see with AI: turning large-scale data into new discoveries.”
Unlike traditional models that require building and training specialized algorithms from scratch for specific tasks, foundation models are pre-trained on vast, unlabeled datasets.
The broad knowledge they acquire through pre-training allows them to generalize across multiple scientific domains through quick fine-tuning, making foundation models both versatile and efficient in accelerating scientific research.
Data collected by NASA’s LRO over the past 17 years was well-suited for training this foundation model because it covers most of the lunar surface in detail.
The data produced from the LRO mission is larger than all other NASA planetary missions combined, capturing an almost seamless, high-resolution mosaic of the entire Moon.
The NASA-IBM model was trained on roughly 2 million image tiles from this dataset, comprising more than 1 million high-resolution camera images at 1-meter resolution and nearly 964,000 multispectral images at 100-meter resolution.
The model also was trained on high-resolution Moon imagery and terrain data from multiple other missions such as NASA's GRAIL (Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory), NASA’s Lunar Prospector, and JAXA’s (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) Selenological and Engineering Explorer.

Because the foundation model is already pre-trained on this dataset, planetary scientists can adapt the model to many different lunar research tasks such as mapping craters, spotting young volcanic features, and estimating where ice may exist near the lunar poles by using only small amounts of labeled data.
For researchers who study the Moon’s polar ice, the NASA-IBM model can help them estimate where ice patches are likely to be stable, on and below the surface.
Dark areas like the Moon’s permanently shadowed regions remain cold enough to trap and preserve ice for up to billions of years.
Studying these areas offers insight into the Moon’s history and presents an opportunity to map potentially usable resources for future space exploration.
While the Moon is thought to no longer be volcanically active, it once experienced dynamic geological processes. For researchers studying lunar volcanism, the NASA-IBM model accelerates the identification of unusual looking volcanic features known as irregular mare patches. Because these structures appear relatively young, they challenge established timelines for lunar cooling, and mapping them could help scientists piece together a more accurate understanding of the Moon’s thermal evolution.
The model also can map surface features, such as craters, more efficiently than manual methods. Every crater is formed by an impact, making crater counts and measurements essential for dating the lunar surface and reconstructing solar system history.
The foundation model helps speed up the process of identifying and measuring craters, allowing scientists to focus on interpreting findings and determining their implications for exploration.
Overall, the model matched or exceeded the performance of several other strong baseline models across all evaluated tasks, achieving comparable results on crater mapping and segmentation of irregular mare patches, while demonstrating a clear advantage on estimating polar ice stability.
The NASA-IBM Lunar Foundation Model is part of the agency’s Office of the Chief Science Data Officer’s strategy for AI for science — a larger, ongoing collaboration between NASA and IBM aimed at using advanced AI to explore our planet and solar system.
It joins a growing collection of AI models developed through this partnership, including:
The Prithvi Models: a family of models pre-trained on Earth observation data and designed to support applications such as disaster monitoring, flood mapping, crop yield prediction, and hurricane prediction.
The Surya Model: a heliophysics model trained on high-resolution solar observation data to predict space weather phenomena such as solar flares which can disrupt power grids and satellite operations.
Within NASA, the Impact AI team at the agency’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, collaborated with scientists in the agency’s Science Mission Directorate Planetary Science Division, NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, and NASA’s Ames Research Center in California’s Silicon Valley, to build the NASA-IBM model. The model is an example of open science in action, uniting experts from NASA, industry, and academia to turn raw data into a resource for lunar discovery.
To support the global research community, the team released comprehensive machine learning-ready pre-training datasets and benchmark collections alongside the model, which is integrated into the open-source TerraTorch toolkit.
Supported by a companion paper available on Hugging Face, this open release ensures reproducible research and equips scientists worldwide to build, compare, and refine AI models for the future of lunar exploration.

International Space Station astronaut gives out of this world tribute to honor Star Trek’s 60th anniversary

Celebrations of Star Trek's 60th anniversary made it all the way to the final frontier.
Among the science and supplies delivered to the International Space Station (ISS) for European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Sophie Adenot's mission on orbit was a small piece of memorabilia to honor one of the most influential pop culture phenomena that has continually called for humanity to turn its gaze to the stars. Adenot carried a small Starfleet badge from one of Star Trek's newest series, Strange New Worlds, which she wore during a video posted by ESA and Star Trek.
"It's a small object, but it carries something bigger: sixty years of a story that taught us to dream about exploring together," ESA said in a separate post picturing the golden badge floating in front of the station's large Cupola windows.
"From the crew of the USS Enterprise to the crews on the International Space Station, the mission hasn't really changed. Explore. Discover. Do it together," the post says.
Adenot launched to the ISS aboard a SpaceX Dragon capsule on NASA's Crew-12 mission to the orbital lab on Feb. 13, and is serving as flight engineer for ISS Expedition 75.
It's her first launch to space, and is set to wrap up soon, pending the launch and arrival of SpaceX's next Dragon spacecraft carrying the astronauts of NASA's Crew-13 mission, expected within just a few weeks.
In Adenot's video, she is seen donning the Starfleet badge on her ESA-issue ISS shirt, floating in ESA's Columbus laboratory module.
"For me, exploration and science are about curiosity and cooperation, daring to go a little farther together, learning from what we discover and build, and turning that knowledge into a better future for everyone," she said.
Star Trek, too, has resonated with similar themes. Since its premiere on Sept. 8, 1966, the show has told stories that place social issues and cultural conflicts front and center in a way that 'demonstrates the best traits of humanity.
It depicts, in its creator Gene Roddenberry's view, an idyllic version of humanity he believed was truly achievable through the act of simply accepting one another.
"The whole show was an attempt to say that humanity will reach maturity and wisdom on the day that it begins not just to tolerate, but to take a special delight in differences in ideas and differences in life forms," Roddenberry said in the 1976 album The Star Trek Philosophy.
"If we cannot learn to actually enjoy those small differences — take a positive delight in those small differences between our own kind — here on this planet, then we do not deserve to go out into space and meet the diversity that is almost certainly out there."
ESA celebrated that philosophy, and the potential it holds for humanity. "Science fiction imagines the future. We build it," ESA's post said.

33rd Range and Aggressor Squadron Supports Advanced Cyber Training at Patrick Space Force Base

PATRICK SPACE FORCE BASE, Fla. – Space Training and Readiness Command’s 33rd Range and Aggressor Squadron supported advanced cyber training at Patrick Space Force Base, Florida, Aug. 24–28, preparing Space Force and Navy cyber operators to defend critical launch infrastructure against realistic digital attacks and establishing combat credibility across the joint force.
The exercise, named Cosmic Chimera, brought together the 33rd RGS, a unit under Space Delta 11, with Space Systems Command’s 645th Cyberspace Squadron and a cyber protection team of remote observers from Naval Network Warfare Command.
Training focused on defensive cyberspace operations: detecting, analyzing and neutralizing cyber threats before they disrupt operational missions.
Cosmic Chimera placed operators inside a live-virtual environment that mirrored the digital systems, tools and operational conditions targeted by real-world adversaries.
During the exercise, the 33rd RGS served as the opposing force, executing realistic cyberattacks based on known adversary tactics to drive defender response.
“Training like this helps turn theory into action,” said Master Sgt. Richie Sounantha, 33rd RGS aggressor crew lead.
“Instead of working through a static scenario, defenders are reacting to a live opponent that can adapt as the exercise unfolds. That gives them a much clearer picture of how they would perform when it matters most.”
The inaugural iteration of Cosmic Chimera advanced a broader 33rd RGS initiative to deliver threat-informed cyber training directly to operational units.
Throughout the week, Guardians demonstrated their ability to counter emerging threats, deny adversary operational advantages and safeguard critical infrastructure.
Scenarios centered on defending operational technology systems tied to the Eastern Range, where the 645th CYS conducts defensive cyber operations.
These systems secure the ground infrastructure vital to space launch operations and critical orbital missions.
The 33rd RGS delivered a cyber range environment that enabled units to train against active threats without endangering operational networks.
For this event, the range integrated upgraded capabilities, allowing aggressor crews to generate dynamic, high-fidelity challenges for defenders.
The exercise evaluated whether cyber defenders could detect an intrusion, assess adversary intent and neutralize the threat before it compromised mission systems.
“The goal is to make training as realistic and relevant as possible,” said Tech. Sgt. Joshua Thompson, 33rd RGS range crew lead. “
We build an environment that reflects the defender’s mission, then apply pressure in a way that resembles how a real threat would behave. That helps crews build confidence, improve teamwork and identify gaps before they are exposed in the real world.”
Thompson noted that training with Navy personnel strengthened joint-force interoperability across teams protecting complex, high-value defense systems.
“The realistic, hands-on training is essential to keeping cyber forces ready to protect critical infrastructure and help ensure reliable access to the space domain and related capabilities,” Sounantha said.

Trump’s Transportation Department Launches New SPACE Task Force to Unleash Commercial Space Innovation

The Trump Administration is moving to make space launches faster, more cost-effective, and keep the U.S. ahead
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy today launched the Space Policy Administration, Coordination, and Execution (SPACE) Task Force–an intradepartmental body that will coordinate space policy activities on behalf of the Department.
The task force will implement the President’s National Space Transportation Policy that include recommendations to expand launch infrastructure, streamline regulation, better integrate the airspace, and coordinate space policy on behalf of USDOT.
“Under President Trump, the U.S. is leading in commercial space innovation. America had 217 of the 329 commercial space launches worldwide in 2025 and we expect that number to soar to 10,000 FAA-licensed launches and reentries yearly by 2035.
This SPACE Task Force is going to ensure this next era of space transportation is led by America–not China,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy.
The Department’s SPACE Task Force will lead and coordinate a unified commercial space transportation strategy.
It will focus on strengthening national security, bolstering our economic competitiveness, and unleashing innovation to secure America’s space dominance in the race against China.
“Keeping America’s edge in commercial space is key to advancing the economic and national security of the United States, and thanks to President Trump, USDOT is empowered like never before to advance this national priority,” said Under Secretary Ryan McCormack.
“The SPACE Task Force will develop and coordinate space policy to achieve the aims of the National Space Transportation Policy and strengthen American leadership in this vital sector.”

French President Emmanuel Macron and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reaffirmed their commitment to space at a major summit co-hosted by France and Germany in Paris.
French President Emmanuel Macron and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called on Europe to strengthen its space industry on Thursday, the second day of the international space summit, co-hosted by France and Germany, at Paris’ Grand Palais.
Speaking at the summit, Macron described Europe’s space sector as “fragile” and emphasised the need to bolster its capabilities, calling for “shared governance” of the industry.
“Outer space remains the only major global commons that is not subject to regulations that match the stakes,” he said. “Shared governance is necessary to address these challenges.”
Macron reiterated that more than 51 deals are set to be signed over the course of the summit, with some €20 billion of investments, listing a series of future milestones for Europe.
"In two years' time, I want to see the first European cargo capsule, Nyx, dock with the International Space Station; in five years' time, the first European lunar lander, Argonaut, land on the Moon's surface."
"And in 10 years' time, the first European manned capsule take off from Kourou with European astronauts and those from other nations on board," he added, referring to Europe's spaceport in French Guiana.
Meanwhile, von der Leyen stressed the importance of Europe stepping up, as she emphasised the crucial role space plays both in terms of both scientific exploration, but also defence — pointing to Russia's war in Ukraine.

Europe's push to build up its military space assets has been driven by Russia's war in Ukraine, as well as its decision to distance itself from its longstanding dependence on the US in the space domain.
"Security on Earth increasingly depends on our security in space", said von der Leyen, as she went on to underline the significance of IRIS², the European Union's upcoming flagship satellite constellation programme.
"Last month, we decided to accelerate the system, by expanding it to more than 350 satellites."
Von der Leyen also underlined the need for the Commission, the European Space Agency and national governments to "pool" their strengths, while also calling for investment "at scale."
Ahead of the summit, several US companies reportedly withdrew from the event, due to pressure from Washington over support for "EU policy positions."
A spokesperson for France's Ministry of Higher Education and Research, which oversees national space policy, told the AFP news agency that SpaceX, Blue Origin, Stoke Space, and Starcloud had withdrawn from the event, stating "it’s hard not to link it to the rumours of pressure in the press.”
Europe has historically invested 0.07% of GDP into space programmes, compared with 0.24% by the US. But 2025 marked a turning point, as the European Space Agency (ESA) approved a record-breaking €22.3 billion budget for its three-year funding cycle (2026–2028) in November, with €35 billion for space for security and defence.
Macron and Joseph Aschbacher, Director of the European Space Agency (ESA) — who also addressed the summit — were joined for a live call with astronaut Sophie Adenot, who is currently on a nine-month mission aboard the the International Space Station (ISS) named the εpsilon mission.

The Ukrainian operation was intended to provoke a direct conflict between Russia and Britain, the security service has said
Russian security operatives have foiled a Ukrainian plot to carry out a false-flag attack on the British ambassador and other diplomats in Moscow, which was intended to draw the UK into a direct conflict with Russia, the Federal Security Service (FSB) has said.
In a statement on Thursday, the agency said it had detained a Russian national who worked for an organization contracted to protect the British Embassy in Moscow.
The man collected sensitive information about embassy security on instructions from a Ukrainian contact, as well as personal data on diplomatic personnel, including photographs, home addresses, details of vehicles, and itineraries, the FSB said.
“The Kiev regime planned to carry out sabotage and terrorist attacks against British diplomatic representatives in Moscow to subsequently blame Russia for them in order to draw the United Kingdom into direct armed conflict with the country, secure additional weapons deliveries [to Kiev], and ramp up sanctions on Russia,” the agency said.
Neither the UK Embassy in Moscow nor British Ambassador Nigel Casey has commented on the statement.
The FSB said the suspect had been recruited by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) and acted on instructions of Ukrainian blogger Dmitry Karpenko, also known as “Apostle Dmitry.”
Karpenko, 44, became known for recording interviews with Russian prisoners of war and covering POW swaps between Moscow and Kiev, as well as for propagating videos featuring Russian nationals collaborating with the Ukrainian military.
Karpenko was also criticized by Ukraine’s Commission on Journalistic Ethics, which said his videos exposed prisoners’ identities and at times resembled interrogations.
The blogger also faced accusations of Islamophobia after an interview with a captured Russian serviceman from Chechnya, during which he made remarks widely seen as offensive to Muslims.
Britain has been one of Ukraine’s biggest backers since the escalation of the conflict in 2022, providing billions of pounds in military and financial assistance to Kiev.
London has also refrained from condemning Kiev over a string of assassinations and bombings targeting Russian military officials and public figures inside Russia.
After Ukraine claimed responsibility for the 2024 killing of Russian General Igor Kirillov, commander of the Radiological, Chemical, and Biological Protection Forces, Downing Street said Britain would “not mourn” his death.

Ukraine Hits Russian Geran and Gerbera Drone Sites, Nebo-SV Radar and Ammunition Depot

Ukraine’s Defense Forces struck multiple Russian drone command posts, three radar stations, an ammunition depot, and other military facilities on September 9 and overnight into September 10, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported.
According to the General Staff, Ukrainian forces struck a facility in Russian-occupied Donetsk used to store, prepare, and launch Geran and Gerbera attack drones.
A series of command posts used by Russian UAV units were also struck across Russian-occupied parts of Ukraine.
The targets included facilities in Osypenko and Tokmak in the Zaporizhzhia region, as well as Komyshuvate, Yasnohorivka, and Ocheretyne in the Donetsk region.
Ukrainian forces additionally targeted Russian command posts in Luhanske and Zaitseve in the Donetsk region, according to the statement.
The operation also extended into Russia’s Bryansk region, where Ukrainian forces struck three radar stations. The targets were located near Pavlin, Kartushino, and Antonivka, with the latter identified as a Nebo-SV radar system.
In Trubchevsk, also in the Bryansk region, Ukrainian forces hit a ground-based relay station used to control Geran and Gerbera attack drones.
Elsewhere, an ammunition depot was struck near Dovzhansk in the Russian-occupied part of Ukraine’s Luhansk region.
The General Staff said the extent of the damage caused by the strikes is still being assessed.
The latest strikes come as Ukraine continues a broader campaign against Russian military infrastructure at operational depth.
Throughout August, Ukraine’s Defense Forces targeted 17 Russian air defense systems, six bridges, more than 20 storage sites, and over 30 command posts, the Defense Ministry reported on September 10.
The ministry said the operations involved middle-strike capabilities and were aimed at expanding Ukraine’s ability to target Russian military assets across the operational rear.

IDF Duvdevan Unit troops arrested a terrorist who was planning to carry out an imminent shooting attack in Beitunya on Thursday following a weeklong manhunt, the IDF said.

Israeli strike kills parents and two children in Gaza, Hamas Health Ministry says
An Israeli airstrike killed a man, his wife, and their two daughters, aged 8 and 12, in a house in the northern Gaza Strip on Thursday, Hamas health officials claimed.

1,500 US Agencies Are About To Get Counter-Drone Powers

The Pentagon’s counter-drone task force brought more than 200 people from 75 departments and agencies to Alexandria, Virginia, on August 21, and the capability its director named as his top near-term priority was low-cost detection covering the entire breadth of the United States.
Joint Interagency Task Force 401 held its second interagency summit almost exactly one year after it was stood up. Army Brig. Gen. Matt Ross, who runs the task force, delivered the opening keynote on the first year’s progress, then spent the sidelines telling reporters he does not believe the problem has been solved.
The Department of War posted its own account of the day on September 9, nineteen days after the fact. It runs through breakout groups, a common operating picture and interagency partnerships.
It does not mention the rule that now lets local police take a drone down without a federal escort, or the roughly 1,500 agencies the government expects to certify under it within two years.
JIATF 401 Now Coordinates 75 Agencies Around One Airspace Picture
Joint Interagency Task Force 401 is the War Department’s lead counter-drone organization, created in August 2025 to replace the Joint Counter-small Unmanned Aircraft Systems Office.
Its second summit centered on building one shared picture of low-altitude air traffic across agencies that had tracked drones separately.
Pete Hegseth signed the establishment memo on August 28, 2025, when the department was still called Defense, and gave the new director authority to approve up to $50 million per development effort.
The summit put Defense Department, FBI, Department of Homeland Security and Federal Aviation Administration officials in one room.
The slide behind Ross put a number on it: 250 attendees from more than 75 agencies and offices. That list runs well past the obvious ones.
The Federal Communications Commission and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission were represented, along with the National Security Council, the Office of Management and Budget, Sandia National Laboratories, the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, and National Guard units from Oklahoma, Virginia, Washington, California and the District of Columbia.
The keynote went to Bryan Stevens, deputy assistant director of the FBI’s Critical Incident Response Group, who opened by noting how unusual it is for an FBI executive to headline a Pentagon event.
“The drone threat does not live neatly inside anyone’s land.”
Ross was blunter than his own department’s press shop. He told the room the gathering was not a victory lap, and told reporters afterward that he does not feel the problem has been solved yet. “I think we’ve got a ton of work to do.”
That is a very different document from the account the War Department published, which has the task force cutting through bureaucracy to deliver state-of-the-art capabilities worldwide.

Local Police Can Now Detect And Disable Drones Without A Federal Escort
The SAFER SKIES Act was signed on December 18, 2025. A Justice and Homeland Security interim final rule implementing it took effect July 1.
Certified state, local, tribal and territorial agencies can now run counter-drone operations under their own authority instead of borrowing a federal deputization.
There are two tiers. Detection and Warning Certification comes from an online course that runs about an hour and issues automatically on completion.
Mitigation Certification, which covers everything from jamming a control link to bringing an aircraft down with reasonable force, requires resident instruction at the FBI’s National Counter-UAS Training Center.

When the rule published on July 6, 61 officers across roughly 46 agencies held mitigation certification. The departments wrote that they expect about 1,500 agencies to certify at the detection tier within two years.
Micheal Torphy, who runs the FBI’s drone program, put the number of officers trained since the rule took effect at roughly 500.
Steven Willoughby, acting executive director of the Homeland Security program executive office for drones and counter-UAS, described the shift as “opening the floodgates” for state and local agencies, on the reasoning that federal teams cannot staff 300 NFL games and four times as many college games.
We covered his shop when it became permanent: DHS created a standing counter-drone office in January with $115 million behind it. By June, the FBI’s counter-drone schoolhouse was already full, mid-World Cup.
The rule does set real limits. Mitigation actions have to be reported within 48 hours, air traffic control has to be notified within five minutes of activation, records of intercepted communications are capped at 180 days, and uncoordinated action can draw civil fines of up to $100,000 per violation.
The authority sunsets on December 31, 2031.
What the rule does not do is publish the equipment list.
The specific systems a certified sheriff’s office may point at your aircraft sit on two lists hosted on a federal portal and maintained jointly by the Justice and Homeland Security departments with the Pentagon, the Transportation Department, the FCC and NTIA.
The rule states outright that those mechanics are not codified in the regulation. The departments expect the opening categories to cover radio-frequency detection that intercepts a drone’s control link and command injection that takes the aircraft over.
Which hardware clears that bar is not something a pilot can look up.
The World Cup Numbers Are The Argument For Pushing Authority Down
Federal agencies detected more than 1,600 unauthorized drones across the FIFA World Cup’s 11 American host cities, seized more than 700 aircraft, opened around 120 federal cases and arrested a dozen people.
Summit participants spent much of the day on what those six weeks taught them. DroneXL was on this in July, when the FBI passed 600 seizures at World Cup venues after months of no-drone-zone warnings.
Now run the arithmetic. Seven hundred aircraft taken, twelve people arrested.
Willoughby told reporters the task force talked to nearly every operator whose drone was seized, because intent is never really known until someone asks. That ratio is the honest picture of American counter-drone enforcement in 2026.
Stevens said every detection and every seizure was logged to one standard so the White House could be shown exactly what happened. Los Angeles in 2028 is next, and he expects it to be larger on every axis.
Directed Energy Heads To A December Shoot-Off At Dugway
Five installations will host high-energy lasers and high-power microwaves for a 365-day run.
Fort Huachuca, Fort Bliss, Naval Base Kitsap, Grand Forks Air Force Base and Whiteman Air Force Base are the sites, with service members operating the systems. A live-fire shoot-off follows in December.
What Ross says he wants out of that year is the fully burdened cost of running these weapons and a set of tactics that does not shut down a base’s own airspace every time a laser fires.
The shoot-off runs jointly with the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering, and it moved from Yuma Proving Ground in Arizona to Dugway Proving Ground in Utah.
Systems that perform can convert into a purchase order on the spot, which is how the task force plans to start production lines rather than another study.
None of this is theoretical now. The Army says a $3-a-shot laser has cut cartel drone flights by 75%, and the FAA cleared military anti-drone lasers for use in U.S. airspace in April after a two-month standoff over what those beams do to passenger aircraft.

If alien civilizations use hyper-efficient computers, they will have a distinct energy signal we can detect

Love it or hate it, artificial intelligence is likely here to stay. Its ravenous need for computational power has overwhelmed chip manufacturers and power companies alike.
While our current AI obsession is likely a bubble ready to burst, we won't simply stop using computers. Since their first invention, computers have continued to grow more powerful, and our civilization has grown ever more dependent on them.
Computation defines our civilization. Perhaps computational power is what defines any advanced civilization. If that's the case, then the most advanced civilizations in the universe would push computing to its most powerful and efficient state.
That's the idea behind a new paper on the arXiv preprint server. In it, the author argues that hyper-efficient computers would be central to any alien civilization.
The author further argues that this would give their star systems a distinct signature, which he calls a Slysh halo. The term is named after V. I. Slysh, who first argued that advanced civilization is best served cold.
If you can get your technology to operate at supercool temperatures, then it will likely be more efficient.
Computers are a good example of this. All non-reversible computations generate waste heat. Thanks to the laws of thermodynamics, this means there is a level of inefficiency to these computations.
Our current computer data centers generate so much heat they need cooling systems to keep from melting. More efficient computer chips can be cooled to ambient room temperature, but they are generally less powerful.
The limit to computing efficiency is defined by Landauer's principle, which states that the maximum efficiency of any non-reversible computation is proportional to its operating temperature.
The colder the computation, the more efficient it will be. For example, an optimal computer at 10 Kelvin is 30 times more efficient than an optimal computer at room temperature, or 300 Kelvin.
A Slysh halo is optimal computing taken to the extreme. Highly efficient computers are scattered in a wide sphere around a civilization's star.
They are close enough to the star to capture light for power but distant enough to operate at the cold temperatures of deep space. How exactly the civilization achieves this feat is left as an exercise for the reader.
The key here is that all those computers would still have some radiant heat. The question is how that heat signature would appear to us.
The author argues that the most likely operating temperature for a Slysh halo is between 5 and 30 Kelvin. This means that it would emit waste heat in the far-infrared or submillimeter spectrum.
There are, however, a couple of caveats. One is that many stars have a halo of debris around them, such as the sun's Oort cloud. This debris emits light in the submillimeter range as well. Another is that really efficient computing is diffuse.
The waste heat it emits would be faint compared to the star. That said, a fully optimal Slysh halo would be bright enough to detect from 100 light-years away, and the Slysh computers would likely emit heat at a single narrow band, unlike a debris halo.
The brightness of a hypothetical Slysh halo puts it right at the edge of current telescopes such as ALMA. We could start combing through observations we already have to look for one of them.
And as more advanced far-infrared and submillimeter telescopes come online, we'll have an even better chance.
If we don't see a Slysh halo around some nearby star, then we could say that the presence of nearby alien civilizations does not compute …

Details of a recent sighting of unidentified flying objects in southern Idaho have been published by a national center that investigates matters of unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP).
The incident took place on September 4, 2026, and involved military aircraft, according to the witness and former soldier.
The National UFO Reporting Center (NUFORC) in Washington State handles a high number of reports of UAP in the United States annually. The center has also investigated 19 cases in Idaho since the start of the year.
Following reports from the public, the NUFORC conducts interviews with witnesses in an effort to rationalize or validate such claims. The most recent Idaho sighting took place approximately 170 miles east of Twin Falls in Caribou County.

On the evening of Friday, September 4, two witnesses near the community of Bench claim to have seen three UAPs pulling off 'multiple U-turns,' and in a manner that is 'physically impossible,' according to the report.
One witness, who claims to have served in the military from 2003 to 2015, stated he heard military jets flying near the objects, which were triangular and multi-colored.
'Objects were initially flying north. We heard jets at the same time', said the witness. 'I know what fighters sound like.'
The witness gave the coordinates of 42.47801, -111.58506 as being the site where he witnessed the incident last week. The incident is identified in the report as #200684.

Secret space-age weapon built to spy on Americans spotted at China's Area 51

A top-secret military aircraft the size of a US stealth bomber has been spotted flying around a base that has been called China's Area 51.
Aviation researcher Andreas Rupprecht, a specialist in Chinese military aircraft who posted the leaked photos of the nearly 50ft-long craft on social media, said it is believed to be a giant, twin-engine drone called the WZ-X.
Commercial satellites first captured images of the WZ-X at China's Malan Air Base in May 2025. Secret test programs of futuristic aircraft at the Chinese facility have drawn comparisons to the infamous US base in Nevada linked to experimental aircraft and even UFOs.
Military analysts believe the 'monster' drone will be used by the Chinese Air Force for high-altitude, long-endurance intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (HALE ISR).
This means it could be tasked with spotting US ships, mapping air defenses and passing along targeting data and locations for missile strikes.
Rupprecht, who has been recognized as a specialist on Chinese military aviation, said the top-secret drone likely has a range of 12,000 miles and can fly at altitudes of more than 60,000 feet.
This means the drone, nicknamed the 'Monster of Malan' by military media outlets, would be able to travel from China's Area 51 and perform spy missions on any US city, from Los Angeles to New York, and still have fuel left to travel thousands of miles.
Although satellites have seen the alleged drone on the ground and in the air over northwest China, the People's Liberation Army Air Force has not officially confirmed the aircraft’s existence, name or capabilities.
Based on images obtained from satellites, including from US aerospace company Planet Labs, the mystery craft is believed to be similar in shape to the US RQ-180 military drone, but much larger.
Its estimated wingspan of 170 feet would make it roughly the same size as an American B-2 stealth bomber, a plane which can carry both nuclear weapons and more conventional 'bunker buster' bombs.
While some military drones do carry a large array of missiles, it remains a mystery if the WZ-X is able to carry any weapons.
However, the drone's flight ceiling of 66,000 feet, according to Rupprecht, would mean this spy craft is capable of cruising 16,000 feet higher than the B-2 bomber.
This means the air is much thinner, so the drone uses less fuel and can stay aloft for many hours while it potentially looks down on large cities or military bases.
At that height, and with its stealth aircraft shape, the WZ-X also becomes even harder to see on radar.
Rupprecht also noted in a social media post that a second, large flying-wing drone - sometimes called GJ-X - was also seen at the same base in China.
Malan has become the Chinese military's main testing center for all types of unmanned aircraft, Rupprecht claimed.
Satellite photos dating back to 2022 have shown that the base has undergone a massive expansion, adding new hangars, runways and other buildings likely connected to the building of large spy planes like the WZ-X and GJ-X.
These alleged programs have sparked concerning comparisons to America's Area 51, which the US intelligence community admitted was real and not just a myth in 2013.
The CIA revealed previously classified documents that the top-secret facility in the Nevada desert was established in the 1950s and played a major role in the creation of America's own revolutionary spy plane - the U-2.
Since then, amateur photographers and UFO researchers have captured numerous images and videos of strange and unknown objects flying over Area 51 that do not match the design of any known military aircraft.
While Malan Air Base has not been linked to the UFO phenomenon to the same level as Area 51, members of Congress and the White House claimed in the documentary 'The Age of Disclosure' that the US, Russia and China were all racing to be the first to fully weaponize non-human tech.
Documentary director Dan Farah said that several US officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, believed the world was now locked in a new Cold War to reengineer the alien technology recovered from these ships.
Unnamed sources tied to the US Naval Air Systems Command have also claimed that two types of aircraft have been trying to spy on what the US has at a top-secret facility in Maryland known as Pax River.
The source told the Liberation Times that one was allegedly drones from China and the other was non-human UFOs.

Social media users have slammed a US DHS immigration ad featuring a brown man labelled Mr Singh and accused it of racial stereotyping.
Critics also mocked the campaign's use of Transformers characters, noting that Optimus Prime is himself an alien.
The US Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) latest immigration enforcement campaign has triggered a backlash online after it used the surname "Singh" alongside a brown, bearded man in a Transformers-style poster.
The digital advertisement, posted by the DHS on X, features a character resembling Optimus Prime with a DHS patch confronting a man identified as "Mr Singh". The message reads: "Get off our roads, you don't know how to drive, Mr Singh."
The poster is part of the Trump administration's wider campaign encouraging undocumented migrants to voluntarily leave the US, promoted under the slogan "Self-deport or find out".
The campaign has drawn criticism from advocacy groups and social-media users, who accused DHS of using racial and religious stereotypes in its immigration messaging.
'Singhs are Hindu, Sikh and American'
The Hindu American Foundation (HAF) criticised the DHS post, saying the use of the surname Singh risks stereotyping a large community.
"'Singhs' are Hindu, they are Sikhs, they are American and they drive," the organisation said in a post on X, calling the DHS post "racist, un-American, anti-Indian profiling/trolling".
HAF also called for an investigation, saying the post went beyond political messaging and was discriminatory.
The Sikh Coalition similarly criticised the campaign, saying Sikhs continued to face targeting and profiling based on their appearance.
"Millions of Sikhs in the United States have the last name Singh," the organisation said, adding that Sikhs remained "fearless in identifying as Sikhs" even when portrayed as enemies by their government.
'Transformers were literally aliens'
One of the most repeated reactions online focused on the choice of Transformers as the theme of the campaign.
"Autobots were aliens btw," one user wrote.
Another said: "Optimus Prime is himself an alien."

Others mocked what they saw as the irony of using an extraterrestrial character to represent the US while portraying immigrants as "aliens".
"It's hilarious using the 'Transformers' for this image when in fact they were illegal aliens to Earth," another user posted.
Another comment read: "So your saying your department are aliens from another planet and are here to report aliens from this planet…"
The references point to the fact that the Transformers characters are extraterrestrial beings in the franchise.
'How can you make such a racist assumption?'
Several users objected specifically to the suggestion that a person identified as "Mr Singh" was being portrayed as a dangerous or incompetent driver.
"What is this? How can you make such a racist and unfair assumption about an entire community?" one user wrote, arguing that the actions of a few individuals should not be attributed to all people with the surname Singh.
Another user said the campaign could encourage people to associate anyone with a South Asian appearance with illegal immigration.
"The public will start reporting every brown, yellow and black as illegal aliens," the user wrote, arguing that DHS needed to be more responsible with its advertising.
Another commenter described the post as "outright racism" and questioned whether the US government should be using such imagery.
'Twenty-five years after 9/11'
The Sikh Coalition linked the controversy to a longer history of profiling of Sikhs in the US.
"Twenty-five years after 9/11, Sikhs are still being targeted and profiled for how we look," the organisation said.
The coalition said millions of Sikhs have the surname Singh, which means "lion", and criticised the portrayal of the community as enemies.
The Hindu American Foundation also questioned whether companies associated with the Transformers franchise were comfortable with the use of the characters in the DHS campaign.
What is the DHS campaign about?
The controversy comes as the Trump administration promotes its CBP Home programme, which allows eligible undocumented migrants to register their intention to leave the US voluntarily.
According to the material supplied by DHS, those who register for self-deportation can receive travel assistance and an exit bonus of $2,600.
DHS has also shared an AI-generated video featuring Megatron, another Transformers character, in which the character negotiates the release of several people described by the department as "aliens".
The department has linked the campaign to enforcement actions against immigrant truck drivers involved in road accidents and other crimes.

William Neil McCasland, a retired Air Force major general and astronautical engineer, disappeared from his Albuquerque home on February 27, 2026.

Reporting based on police records describes his vehicle and personal belongings being found at home, with subsequent searches failing to locate him.

1 year since Capitol Hill public testimony on UFO secrecy

One year ago this week, members of Congress who’ve been investigating UFO secrecy heard sworn testimony from a panel of witnesses about coverups, retribution, and exotic technology of unknown origin.
The Sept. 9 hearing on Capitol Hill was the last in a series of public testimonies.
Investigative reporter George Knapp presented updated accounts to congressional representatives examining UFO non-disclosure, detailing alleged agreements between private contractors and government agencies to transfer exotic materials of unknown origin.
The disclosures follow sworn testimony presented during congressional hearings on UFO non-disclosure held in September 2023.
Official government statements regarding unidentified aerial phenomena date back to 1947, when the U.S. Army Air Corps reported retrieving a crashed disc near Roswell, N.M., before revising its account the following day.
Public scrutiny increased in 2023 after David Grusch, a former intelligence official, testified under oath that the government maintains an ongoing cover-up involving non-human bodies, unusual materials and recovered UFO craft.
According to 8 News Now investigative reporter Knapp, information submitted to Congress detailed negotiations between Las Vegas billionaire Robert Bigelow and executives at defense contractor Lockheed Martin.
Knapp reported that Bigelow, the founder of Bigelow Aerospace, sought access to exotic hardware and crash debris held by private contractors.
“I have verified for the record that Bigelow and a close associate from AAWSAP engaged in negotiations with high-level executives at Lockheed Martin and finalized an agreement where Bigelow’s company would be provided with a quantity of exotic material that had been concealed and safeguarded at a site in California,” Knapp said. “That material did not originate here.”
The Advanced Aerospace Weapon System Applications Program, known as AAWSAP, was a secret UFO study managed by Bigelow’s aerospace firm as a contractor for the Defense Intelligence Agency starting in 2009 in Southern Nevada.
The late U.S. Sen. Harry Reid secured black budget funding for the program after discovering that foreign adversaries were studying materials from UFO crashes.
Reid highlighted international intelligence efforts when discussing foreign involvement in UFO research. “Russia, the former Soviet Union, is governed by an individual who directed the KGB,” Reid said.
“At one point, they employed as many as 30,000 agents, KGB agents. Russia is involved in this; there is no doubt about it.”
According to statements from individuals with knowledge of the events, Bigelow met with Lockheed Vice President James Ryder in Nevada and California to arrange the transfer of exotic materials collected from crash sites over several decades.
Bigelow later discussed his rationale for approaching major defense contractors.
“My personal strategy was that I could provide something to aerospace companies that possessed hardware and various materials different things and…there was something they lacked that I could produce,” Bigelow said.
“There was something that they lacked none of them had that I could produce that provided me with a reason to have a need to know.”
Physicist Dr. Eric Davis, who worked for Bigelow intermittently beginning in 1996, publicly stated in interviews that materials intended for transfer were held at a Lockheed facility near Palmdale, Calif.
Additionally, U.S. Rep. Eric Burlison obtained authorization to visit classified military sites, including Area 51 in Nevada, to search for concealed materials referenced in witness accounts.
