US crude oil prices pass $100 per barrel as Trump says war in Iran will end after midterms

The West Texas Intermediate price of oil, the U.S. benchmark, hit $101.53 per barrel Thursday morning.
The last time WTI prices broke the $100 per barrel mark was in May. They fell to pre-war levels in early July following the announcement of an interim peace agreement with Iran. That agreement has since expired, and global markets are responding as hostilities continue.
President Donald Trump told reporters Wednesday before he headed into the Republican Party's midterm convention that the war in Iran would end "immediately after the election," CNBC reported. Trump also said energy prices would, right after the election, begin "tumbling down."
The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday, citing unnamed sources, that top White House advisors have discussed with Trump the possibility the war would drag on through the remainder of his term. In the Oval Office and Situation Room, Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and others have discussed, according to the Journal's sources, that Iran could resist the blockade and military tactics to extend the war into 2029.
Average U.S. gasoline prices rose nearly $0.06 per gallon between Wednesday and Thursday, according to AAA. Fuel prices typically respond to rising oil prices slowly, so the increases this week are likely just the beginning of a sustained rise over the coming weeks.

Home sales fell in August as nation's supply rises to highest level in a decade
Despite the increased supply, home prices continued to rise. The median price of a home sold in August was $429,100, up 1.6% from August 2025.

Sales of previously owned homes fell in August as high prices and higher mortgage rates made buyers wary.
Between July and August, sales fell 2% to 3.98 million units on a seasonally adjusted, annualized basis, CNBC reported, citing the National Association of Realtors. Year over year, sales were down 1.2%.
This was the slowest pace since June 2025, with the Northeast and Midwest showing the most sluggish sales.
The supply of houses for sale totaled 1.62 million units at the end of August, up 3.2% from July and up nearly 6% from the year before. At the current sales pace, the figure is a 4.9-month supply, which is the highest in over a decade.
Despite the increased supply and slow sales pace, home prices continued to rise. The median price of a home sold in August was $429,100, up 1.6% from August 2025, a new record high for the month of August.
The figures are based on closings, meaning the contracts were likely signed in June and July, when mortgage rates were higher than they were in spring. Rates moved considerably higher in the middle of July.

Gov. Spencer Cox, R-Utah, on Thursday declared Sept. 10 as "Charlie Kirk Day" in the state, marking the one-year anniversary of his assassination.
Kirk was shot at an open air event at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10, 2025. Tyler Robinson has been charged with his murder.
"One year ago today, Charlie Kirk came to Utah to take part in a fundamental American tradition: speak openly, debate ideas, and persuade others," Cox posted on X.
"Today, we honor Charlie’s memory by choosing a politics worthy of our country, one where we stand firmly for what we believe and reject violence.
September 10, 2026, is officially Charlie Kirk Day in Utah."
