Bessent says ‘a large bank’ will be sanctioned on Monday as part of Iran strategy

“A large bank” will be sanctioned by the U.S. next week, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Thursday.

“We’re going to do it on Monday because we want to honor the memory of our fallen citizens on 9/11. But watch this space on Monday,” Bessent said during an appearance on “Real ​America’s Voice,” without naming the financial institution nor the country.

The announcement comes after the Trump administration sanctioned the Dubai, United Arab Emirates, branches of the second-largest bank in Egypt which is believed to have given Iranians $1.8 billion of funds. Bessent said the 30th-largest Turkish bank “that had been giving to the Iranians” will also be closed. The Treasury Department on Sept. 4 said it was sanctioning Turkey-based financial institution Golden Global Yatirim Bankasi Anonim Sirketi and its subsidiaries.

Since the Mideast conflict began in February, the U.S. has implemented a series of economic measures against Iran, including sanctions.However, the Trump administration escalated its pressure last month via what Bessent called “Operation Economic Outcast,” which imposed sanctions on almost 60 entities, vessels and individuals. The scope of secondary sanctions was also expanded on those involved in business with Iran in industries including shipping and technology.

Russia is open to cooperation and doing business with “the whole world,” President Vladimir Putin has said. This includes both Western economic powers – despite what he described as their “ugly forms of competition” – and the growing economies of the Global South and East.

“We are ready to cooperate with all our partners,” Putin told the gathering on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS summit in India, adding that they could be “old or new.”

Zelensky’s chief of staff suspect in new graft probe – RT source

According to sources cited by Ukrainskaya Pravda, Budanov ordered Mudraya to help Galushchenko secure his release from pre-trial detention, likely at Zelensky’s direction.

In surveillance tapes published by NABU, Mudraya said she was acting on behalf of her superiors without naming anyone.The outlet suggested, based on the context of the conversation, that she was likely referring to Budanov when she quoted an official as saying that “corruption needs to be systematized and controlled” and not combated.

Asked by Hromadske about the allegation, Budanov said: “Let the court sort out whose names are mentioned and where.”

HUR came under media scrutiny earlier this month after its personnel engaged in firefights in Kiev with troops from the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU). The altercation stemmed from a custody dispute over a member of a neo-Nazi-led militia force, which the military intelligence incorporated under Budanov’s leadership.

Last week, Ruslan Kravchenko, a Zelensky appointee, tendered his resignation as prosecutor general afterNABU accused his chief cybercrime investigator of extracting payments from scam-call centers on behalf of his superior.

Zelensky previously tried and failed to place the Western-backed agency under the control of the Prosecutor General’s Office.
