For fifty years, Emma Bonino fought for things everyone told her were impossible — and then she won them: the right to a divorce and abortion, the abolishment of the death penalty, and the founding of the International Criminal Court.
A foreign minister and senator in Italy, when Emma ran Europe's humanitarian office, she didn't simply send others into war zones. She went personally, entering conflict zones in Bosnia, Rwanda, Sudan, and Afghanistan to deliver crisis relief and confront human rights violations.
She was also a great family friend. My father had enormous respect for her, presenting her with the International Crisis Group's Fred Cuny Award in 2015. She served on Open Society's global board in the years that followed and helped found the European Council on Foreign Relations.
She was a champion of human rights and a feminist giant. And one of the bravest and toughest people I've ever known.
Today, Italy has lost one of its great consciences. My father and I have lost a dear friend.
