In the aftermath of Charlie Kirk's assassination, President Donald Trump has shown support for a TikTok video that advocates for the revival of a law to hold news organizations accountable for spreading misinformation.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump shared the video on Saturday afternoon. The TikTok user, known as @official_elly_may, called on the former president to reinstate the Smith-Mundt Act of 1948.

Utah Senator Mike Lee on Wednesday unveiled legislation he has called the “Charlie Kirk Act,” that if made law would “restore” the de facto dissemination ban. In a statement, he argued the measure would promote “freedom of thought” and allow Americans to “figure out the truth for themselves without government telling them what to believe.”
