Beyond Naval Support Activity Bahrain, the evacuations and forced relocations spanned the entire Gulf footprint. Roughly 40,000 U.S. troops were in the region when the war began, and Iranian strikes hit at least 16–17 installations, rendering many "all but uninhabitable."
Qatar:
Al Udeid Air Base – the largest U.S. base in the Middle East (~10,000 troops, CENTCOM HQ). Personnel began being pulled out as early as January 2026 (pre-war), and by July 2026 satellite imagery showed the base had been emptied of U.S. aircraft and assets.
UAE:
Al Dhafra Air Base – struck by Iranian missiles; satellite imagery confirmed damage and the removal of U.S. aircraft by late July 2026.
Kuwait:
(hardest hit, ~13,500 U.S. troops)
Ali Al Salem Air Base – collapsed roofs, damaged communications systems; personnel relocated.
Camp Buehring – described as a "nearly empty, heavily damaged shell" after repeated strikes; near-total evacuation of personnel and equipment.
Multiple other Kuwaiti sites forced troops into civilian facilities and improvised command locations.
Other countries:
Iraq (Erbil), Jordan (Muwaffaq Salti Air Base), Saudi Arabia, and Oman all had installations struck or personnel dispersed.
The net effect: CENTCOM shifted to a remote/dispersed operating model, with thousands of service members working from hotels, office buildings, and temporary sites rather than hardened bases. The Pentagon called the evacuations "temporary" but, as of the September 1 DoD memo, no return timeline had been set for most of them.
