Greenland’s Icecap Grew This Year

For years, we have been told that Greenland’s icecap has been losing billions of tonnes of ice, but at present rates, it would take Greenland 27,000 years to melt away. Vice President Al Gore warned in 2009 that the polar ice caps would be ice-free in 5 to 7 years.

In the time since a 2021 study was conducted, ice loss has continued to slow down and is back to 1920s levels. The 2025/26 season actually saw a small increase of 6 Gt in ice mass. If it is shrinking at all, it is doing so no faster than a century ago.
