Speaker Mike Johnson dismissed fears of civilizational wipeout from artificial intelligence,comparing the recent alarms from inside AI labs to what he characterized as overblown warnings on the political left over climate change.
He invoked Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) while defending President Donald Trump’s description of the AI alarms as a “HOAX.”
“When the president says ‘a hoax,’ what he’s referring to is, we’ve all seen this movie before,” Johnson said in response to a question about Trump’s remarks at a Tuesday news conference. “A catastrophe is created. The media gets spun up. Social media gets spun up. Everybody says we’re all … going to be dead in 10 years.”
He added: “You remember what AOC said — was it climate change? What was her stupid thing? She said, ‘We’re all going to be dead in 10 years’?”
“What the president is saying is you’re not all going to be dead in 10 years,” Johnson continued. “That’s a hoax.”
Johnson’s comment appears to refer to a comment Ocasio-Cortez made in 2019, shortly after entering the House, summarizing a U.N. report on climate change: “We’re, like, the world is going to end in 12 years if we don’t address climate change.”
The remarks come as Republicans are caught between warnings from AI executives and the president’s demand that AI stay unregulated lest Chinese researchers leapfrog U.S. companies. The speaker reiterated during the news conference that he is hoping to speak with top AI executives and the president in a meeting at the White House later this week.

Massie launches push to impeach Hegseth
It’s the first time a member of the president’s own party is trying to oust a Pentagon chief.

Kentucky Republican Rep. Thomas Massie on Tuesday introduced articles of impeachment against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, an extraordinary attempt by members of the president’s own party to oust a Pentagon chief.
The articles are for high crimes and misdemeanors, including the war in Iran, the Trump administration’s boat strikes in the Caribbean and Hegseth’s alleged suppression of free speech in his fight with Democrats over their calls for troops to refuse illegal orders.
Massie’s effort is unlikely to succeed in a GOP-controlled Congress. But the nature of the resolution means the House will be forced to vote on it this week, setting up a politically complicated vote for Republicans right before the midterm elections.
A group of nine Democrats, led by Rep. Yassamin Ansari (D-Ariz.), introduced an impeachment resolution in April against Hegseth. They accused him of prosecuting an unauthorized war in Iran, targeting civilians and mishandling classified information, among other charges. But Massie’s move is a first-of-its kind effort to go after a Cabinet member in the same party.
It also continues a feud between Massie — one of the most vocal critics of the Trump administration’s war — and Hegseth. The Pentagon chief took the unusual step in May of campaigning for Massie’s primary opponent, former Navy SEAL Ed Gallrein. Massie was defeated by Gallrein soon after.
The looming impeachment vote presents a political conundrum for Democrats, many of whom are open to Hegseth’s ouster if they win control of the House in November. But those lawmakers argue any impeachment must be the result of careful investigative work by the committee with oversight of the Pentagon.
It’s not the only such effort lawmakers are dealing with this week.The House is expected to reject a push by Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) to impeach Trump.

Senate cloture vote on Clarity Act fails, dealing regulatory blow to crypto industry

The Senate on Tuesday voted to block the Clarity Act from advancing, dealing a major blow to the crypto industry’s push for a comprehensive market structure framework.
The procedural vote leaves the bill stalled on Capitol Hill after months of negotiations aimed at building bipartisan support.Republican leaders had released a revised version of the bill Sunday, adding new ethics restrictions to address Democratic concernsto limit the ability of public officials to profit from crypto ventures.
Those changes weren’t enough, however, to resolve the remaining opposition.
The vote was a stunning loss for the crypto industry, which had exuded confidence that enough senators would vote to advance the bill. Leading up to the vote, Democrats expressed frustration that Republican negotiators didn’t meet their demands regarding ethics to address profits gained from crypto ventures by President Donald Trump and his family.
“The compromise we had was a good ethics compromise that would have bought a lot of Dem votes,” said Sen. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz., a key Democratic negotiator, before the vote. Gallego charges Republicans with caring “more about making sure the president keeps making money than actually bringing regulations,” and consequently “failing the whole system.”
The price of bitcoin was last down 3%, while Coinbase and Circle shares slid 8% and 10%, respectively, amid the broader market sell-off.
The vote on the motion to proceed attracted 50 votes for and 49 against, far below the 60 votes needed to clear the procedural hurdle.
Crypto framework
The bill would establish a framework for crypto, divide oversight between the Securities Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, set registration requirements and strengthen anti-money-laundering protections.
For the crypto industry, the significance of Tuesday’s vote was whether the act could move forward for Senate debate and consideration. Even if successful, it would still need to then survive further Senate negotiations and votes, then clear the House before reaching President Trump’s desk.
Though executives and investors say legislation would lend certainty and help attract long-term capital, much of the industry has resigned itself to the likelihood that regulatory momentum may have to be built outside of Congress. The SEC, for example, has proposed allowing startups to sell as much as $75 million of tokens without registering, while the CFTC recently approved the first bitcoin perpetual futures in the U.S.
The failed vote likely means the crypto industry will have to wait until next year for clearer rules. Sen. Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyo., the top champion of the crypto industry in the Senate, told reporters earlier Tuesday that “it’s over” if the Clarity Act procedural vote failed.
Also complicating bringing the bill back up for consideration is the midterm election in seven weeks. Senators are scheduled to leave Washington in early October and not return until after the election. The House recesses even earlier, heading out of town at the end of this week. Members, especially those in tight races, are eager to return to their home states and hit the campaign trail.
Tuesday’s vote might pave the way for Fairshake, a crypto political action committee, to donate to candidates running against senators who voted to block the Clarity Act.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) needs sweeping reform to ensure that powerful countries are held to the same standards as the rest of the world, human rights advocate David Lopez has said.
The Hague-based ICC was established in 2002 under the Rome Statute to prosecute genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity, and the crime of aggression. It has long faced accusations of political bias and selective justice.
Speaking to RT on Tuesday, Lopez said that over the past two decades, cases in Africa and the Global South have received disproportionate attention, while alleged crimes involving powerful Western countries have gone unpunished.
He referenced the 2003 Iraq war, claims of CIA torture, and the conflict in Gaza as examples, noting that alleged US crimes in the case of Afghanistan were set aside due to pressure from Washington.
“Justice with no power over the powerful is colonial administration of the law,” he said.
The court must be “decolonized” through structural reforms that give Africa, Asia, and Latin America greater representation and reduce its financial dependence on Western countries, Lopez argued.
The ICC currently has 125 member states, but major powers, including the US, Russia, China, and India, are not among them. Israel also rejects its jurisdiction.
Washington has sanctioned ICC judges, prosecutors, and other staff over cases involving US and Israeli nationals. The court issued arrest warrants in 2024 for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and then-Defense Minister Yoav Gallant over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
The institution is also facing growing opposition from member states.Venezuela and Chad have recently announced plans to withdraw, bringing to five the number of countries seeking to leave over the past year, alongside Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger. The three African states have accused the ICC of selective justice and neocolonialism.

Providence to receive $1.1B from Nike co-founder to build women’s health hospital in Oregon

Providence will receive $1.1 billion — one of the largest gifts ever pledged to a U.S. healthcare institution — from Nike co-founder Phil Knight and his wife, Penny. The donation will allow the nonprofit health network to build Oregon’s first hospital focused on women’s health, increase support for cardiovascular services and improve patient care.
“Penny and I have always believed that real breakthroughs come from people willing to take on the toughest challenges,” Phil Knight said in a statement. “Providence has shown that kind of ambition in cardiovascular care, and we see the same opportunity to do something truly distinctive for women’s health.”
The funds are being directed to Portland’s Providence St. Vincent Medical Center and to Providence Heart Institute.
The new women’s hospital will be located on the campus of the medical center and provide care in specialties including gynecology, pregnancy, labor and delivery, menopause and cardiovascular care. Providence leaders note that many pregnant patients are also managing hypertension, diabetes, behavioral health and substance abuse, requiring more specialized services.

The Knights have previously donated $200 million over the course of 10 years to Providence Heart Institute, which sees nearly 63,000 patients each year across the Pacific Northwest, up from 40,000 a decade ago. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death and hospitalization in the U.S.
The added support for the institute will help pay for diagnostic cardiac imaging, additional clinical trials, and the recruitment of leading doctors.
Knight, 88, co-founded Nike with Bill Bowerman in Eugene, Ore., in 1964. The business was originally called Blue Ribbon Sports before rebranding seven years later. Knight is currently worth an estimated $25.4 billion, according to Forbes.

Cruz and Hawley shut down antitrust exemptions for AI companies

Two Senate Republicans said Tuesday that providing antitrust exemptions to artificial intelligence companies to facilitate discussions on how to make AI safer should be taken off the table — as lawmakers discuss ways to respond to industry warnings about the need for guardrails on the rapidly evolving technology.
“To watch AI CEOs saying, ‘We’re about to destroy the world so give us control of the government so we can lock in our monopoly status and prevent any innovators from challenging us,’ is just lunacy,” Senate Commerce Chair Ted Cruz (R-Texas) said during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing with FBI Director Kash Patel. “And, by the way, if you’re about to destroy the world, how about, don’t. How about, stop.”
Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) also piled on.
“Absolutely not,” Hawley said. “There is no world in which I will consent to giving the most powerful companies in the history of the world — a small group of three or four of them — antitrust exemptions from our laws so that they can, what, collude together?”
Their comments come amid rising fears that AI models could soon become advanced enough to evade human control if left unchecked. The chief executives of leading AI labs are sounding the alarm over the need to slow down progress, and one possibility could be for Congress to provide an antitrust carveout to allow competing companies to enter into agreements to stem the tide.
Patel didn’t directly address the antitrust comments at the hearing Tuesday but did provide insight into how the FBI is thinking about the emerging technology.
The department, Patel said, uses AI models under test case scenarios to make sure they are cooperating with federal law, adding that it’s important to pursue those who create AI models with criminal intent.
“We need to go after the people who created these models that are going rogue with the specific purpose and intention to commit a criminal act,” Patel said, noting that the FBI “can’t be punishing people if they created something lawfully” and then a criminal used it for nefarious acts.
Patel also said the FBI doesn’t need to create a new division to take on the issue — the existing cyber division is sufficient — but could use additional resources.
“We need federal funding to go out there and buy the creations of these companies and use them for law enforcement purposes,” Patel said.
At a separate news conference Tuesday afternoon, Attorney General Todd Blanche was noncommittal on whether AI companies need an antitrust waiver to self-regulate in the first place.
“Whether entities need an antitrust waiver is not something I can answer from the podium of the White House,” he said. “There’s dozens of factors that go into that, and there’s an application process, and there’s a kind of a process that DOJ and others use to determine what side.
He added, “I can say that, to the extent that those companies are looking to regulate themselves or fix problems that they have, that should do that.”

Saudi pipeline closure is a brief interruption that will last days, U.S. Energy secretary tells CNBC

Saudi Arabia’s critical East-West crude oil pipeline will start operating again “very soon” after Iran-backed attacks forced its closure, U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright told CNBC in an interview Tuesday.
“This will be a brief and temporary interruption. It will be measured in days,” Wright told CNBC’s Morgan Brennan in Houston where energy officials from G20 nations are meeting.
The Saudis closed the pipeline late last week after it sustained damage in drone attacks launched from Iraq. Iran-backed proxy groupsare responsible for the strikes, Wright said.
Riyadh has relied on the pipeline to shift crude oil exports to the Red Sea as the U.S. and Iran battle for control over the Strait of Hormuz.The Saudis are now shifting some exports back through Hormuz with U.S. military support while the pipeline is down, Wright said.
U.S. crude oil prices have gained more than 5% this week to trade above $105 per barrel, as the market tries to assess how big a supply disruption the pipeline outage will cause.
Satellite imagery appears to show extensive damage to one of the pipeline’s pumping stations.“Judging from the on-line pictures, it will take months to repair,” said Andy Lipow, president of Lipow Oil Associates, in a Monday note.
Riyadh has described the closure as a “precautionary measure.” It has not provided a damage assessment or said how long the pipeline will stay shut.
The market could lose 120 million barrels if the pipeline is closed for a month, said Matt Smith, director of commodity research at Kpler. This assumes exports of 4.5 million barrels per day pass through the pipeline and 15 million barrels are stored at the Yanbu terminal on the Red Sea, Smith said.

As multiple Latin American country leaders have recently discovered, it is the judiciary that generally facilitates the rise in Communism, and without the ability to directly confront and remove activist judges – the challenges of sovereign restoration are far more difficult.
The professional political left has spent multiple generations taking apart the institutions of government from within, mostly through selection and appointments based on a direct ideology in opposition to the foundational principles of our American government. The corruption cancer has slowly spread in both culture and government over decades and is now in full metastasis.
No modern U.S. president has received more attacks, more confrontation and more opposition; all of it based on the simple Trump objective of putting America first. I can understand President Trump’s frustration; in fact, I think we all can.
