NASA Activates Roman’s Primary Instrument, Checks Out Coronagraph

NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope team has successfully activated the Wide Field Instrument, a 300-megapixel infrared camera that will allow scientists to explore wide swaths of the cosmos very quickly without sacrificing exquisite detail.
Roman’s planet imager — the Coronagraph Instrument — also stretched its digital, electronic, and mechanical “limbs” as part of an initial test after waking up earlier this month.
These steps are part of a monthslong series of calibrations and tests, as Roman continues its million-mile journey to its destination at the second Lagrange point, L2.
Sky-scanner comes online
Each image taken by the Wide Field Instrument, or WFI, will capture a patch of the sky bigger than the apparent size of a full moon with all the sharpness of space telescopes like NASA’s Hubble.
Its sweeping cosmic surveys will help scientists discover new information about planets beyond our solar system, untangle mysteries like dark energy, and map how matter is structured and distributed throughout the cosmos.
The mission’s broad, crisp view will also produce an exciting new resource for a wide range of additional scientific studies.
“After years of effort to build and test the instrument on the ground, we now have confirmation that it is operational in space.
This is a huge milestone for the team at Goddard, our industry teams at BAE Systems, Inc. and Teledyne, and our science centers,” said Josh Schlieder, the Wide Field Instrument scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.
“There is much to do, but we are on our way to groundbreaking science.”
Before the team could activate the WFI, they had to let it rest for 10 days to dry out and decontaminate with the detectors at a relatively warm (compared to their final operating temperature) minus 85 degrees Fahrenheit, or minus 65 Celsius.
On the morning of Sep. 11, they turned off the instrument heater and let the WFI cool down to minus 225 Fahrenheit (minus 143 Celsius), at which point they could activate Roman’s 18 infrared detectors, which combined have a sensing area about the size of a laptop screen.

Later that night, the team activated the calibration system, which they used the next morning to start sending test data through the instrument and down to engineers on the ground.
On Saturday evening, the focus shifted to the element wheel — a system of filters, prisms, and other optics used to tune the wavelengths of light that reach the detectors and spread light from cosmic objects into individual colors — as engineers tested it in the absence of gravity for the very first time.
Finally, on Sunday morning, the team made sure the WFI’s focus mechanism functions properly — an important step since it will be used to focus the hundreds of thousands of images the instrument will take.
While these activities were happening, the detectors continued to cool to their final temperature of about minus 300 Fahrenheit (minus 183 Celsius).
All of these assessments confirmed the instrument is working as expected. The mission remains on track to release Roman’s first science images by early 2027.
Coronagraph in tip-top shape
The Roman Coronagraph is a system of optics, masks, self-flexing mirrors, and sensors designed to demonstrate the most advanced technologies ever flown in space for directly imaging planets around other stars.
It will block the glare from stars and make it possible for scientists to see the faint reflected light from planets in orbit around them.
Scientists and engineers at the Coronagraph Commanding Center at Caltech/IPAC in Pasadena, California, confirmed they can communicate with all of the instrument’s components: software, thermal control, mechanisms, cameras, and the avionics which drive all of these.
Essentially, operators on the ground ensured they could remotely flip all the switches that allow them to control the instrument, like the movable mechanisms that hold all of its masks, color filters, lenses, and prisms.
The test also involved confirming that the thermal control is performing as expected, warming the hardware to operating temperatures — a balmy 72 degrees Fahrenheit (22 Celsius).
Aside from the detectors, the coronagraph is designed to work at near-room temperature to make it easier to test and to match the material properties of the deformable mirrors.
“Now that this test is complete, we’ve been decontaminating: sitting idle with our detectors warm so anything that’s stuck to the surface, such as water or trace chemicals, will tend to leave it,” said Eric Cady, an optical engineer leading commissioning efforts for the Roman Coronagraph at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California. “This will continue for 30 days, with occasional stops to do other early calibration activities.”

The unpiloted Roscosmos Progress 96 spacecraft is safely in orbit and on its way to the International Space Station after launching at 9:33 a.m. EDT (6:33 p.m. Baikonur time) on a Soyuz rocket from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

Chief of Space Operations Schiess outlines priorities to strengthen Space Force combat power

Chief of Space Operations Gen. Douglas Schiess unveiled his priorities to strengthen Space Force combat power and highlighted Guardians’ contributions to the Joint Force in a keynote address at the 2026 Air, Space & Cyber Conference, Sept. 15.
He outlined three lines of effort for his tenure: Forge the Guardian Ethos, Arm and Grow the Guardian Force, and Integrate Guardian Power at Scale.
This announcement came just twelve days after assuming responsibility as the Space Force’s senior uniformed leader.
Forge the Guardian Ethos
Schiess described his first line of effort as the foundational priority, rooted in the Space Force’s values of Character, Connection, Commitment and Courage.
He stressed that every Guardian is a Guardian first—before specializing as an acquirer, space operator, intelligence analyst or cyber operator.
“The Space Force acts together as one Guardian team—a military force uniquely trained and equipped to deliver unparalleled space warfighting advantage,” he said.
He then pointed to the inspiration provided by Space Force Military Training Instructors who train new recruits at Basic Military Training and to the youngest Guardians already operating at what was considered science fiction just a few years ago.
Arm and Grow the Guardian Force
As his second line of effort, Schiess said he remains focused on arming and growing the Guardian Force.
“Today’s advantage cannot be assumed for tomorrow. We face determined and credible adversaries who are building and fielding counterspace systems at incredible speeds to target directly the United States’ space advantage,” he said.
“That is why we don’t just monitor the domain. We stand ready to defend it.”

Schiess echoed remarks by Department of the Air Force Secretary Troy Meink on Monday, who acknowledged the Space Force has weapons in space.
“Today, Guardians operate on-orbit weapons that can defend the Joint Force against space-enabled attacks,” Schiess said.
“We will make disciplined and responsible choices about how we build and sustain our combat advantage, which means scaling our ability to respond to threats.”
He explained Space Force growth and acquisition transformation must happen with the right organizational structures and the authorities in place to acquire and deliver capabilities to the Joint Force.
Schiess discussed a recent VICTUS HAZE mission that demonstrated the ability to launch and respond on-demand to an on-orbit threat in just 17 hours by working together with industry and across multiple acquisitions and operational Space Force units.
“Space Systems Command, our industry partners, and Combat Forces Command proved to the world that if an adversary targets the United States Space Force, we have the capability to deliver a swift response and we are going to continue working on getting faster and faster,” Schiess said.
Integrate Guardian Power at Scale
In his final line of effort, Schiess described the need for embedding Guardians on the frontlines and bringing space expertise directly into the Joint battlespace.
He highlighted one Guardian’s story, who deployed to the CENTCOM area of responsibility with the 42nd Electronic Warfare Detachment.
Shortly after Operation Epic Fury began, she had to reconfigure her weapon system and conduct critical non-kinetic fires under missile attack, remaining at her console until ordered to safety.
“Our components, notably at U.S. Central Command and Space Command, with support from components at European Command and Pacific Command, demonstrated that Guardians are not supporting from the sidelines as a ‘nice to have.’
We are delivering spacepower directly into the fight as a ‘need to have.’”
Looking ahead, Schiess stressed the need for a sustained pipeline of trained Guardians equipped with advanced capabilities, so combatant commanders can rely on space expertise at home and abroad.
He underscored support for Guardian families, stating that he and his wife, Debbie, are committed to addressing stress points and strengthening support networks.
“We are fully committed to finding the solutions,” he said. “We want Guardians to step into the fight with absolute confidence knowing that our families are taken care of and secure.”
Schiess closed by reiterating the ultimate goal of deterring conflict.
“Deterrence is strongest when we have a credible force and the resolve to use it. That is what the Space Force brings to you…by delivering space superiority and by ensuring we get after our nation’s interests in, from and to space.”

Europe commits to sustainable practices in space

How can Europe remain competitive and independent while ensuring that space stays safe and sustainable for all?
At the International Space Summit, ESA worked with European and international partners to advance in-space operations and services, improve the long-term sustainability of space activities and support a global framework governing radio frequencies and satellite orbits.
Held in Paris from 9 to 10 September 2026, the International Space Summit brought together 90 national delegations and international organisations to reflect on the future of space.
Key points in the summit’s agenda included the growing use of low-Earth orbits, the sustainability and security of space operations, the exploration of the Moon and Mars, and how the space sector can improve its competitiveness and technological development.
On top of crucial discussions on Europe’s future in space, the summit resulted in the celebration of a joint declaration between the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Commission on advancing In-Space Operations and Services (ISOS), and the endorsement of two declarations on sustainability in space.
Advancing European in-space operations and services
In-orbit services are set to change the way we operate in space. Rather than relying on ‘disposable’ satellites, these services will bring the infrastructure we need to achieve refilling, assembly, manufacturing, removal, repositioning, inspection, refurbishment and recycling in orbit.
This approach supports the transition towards a circular economy in space, allowing new operations and transportation paradigms. The improved sustainability and efficiency will go hand in hand with new commercial opportunities for Europe.
As in-orbit operations are of strategic importance to Europe, ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher and the EU Commissioner for Defence and Space Andrius Kubilius celebrated a joint declaration between ESA and the European Commission, in a ceremony that took place during the summit.
The message of the declaration is clear: to cooperate closely on the development and maturation of key technologies and mission concepts as part of the EU’s ISOS initiative, so Europe can operate independently in space and strengthen its technological leadership, competitiveness and long-term sustainability.
By joining forces, ESA and the European Commission are creating the conditions for a thriving European in-space service ecosystem.
The partnership combines ESA’s technical excellence with the European Union’s policy, regulatory and funding frameworks, enabling a coherent and strategic approach.

A more sustainable use of space for all
The participants of the summit endorsed the ‘Declaration for a sustainable use of outer space for all’, reflecting a shared commitment to a peaceful, secure, safe, stable and sustainable use of outer space.
By reaffirming full compliance with the principles of the 1967 Outer Space Treaty, the declaration highlights the role of international cooperation and coordination, and the need for a pragmatic and more transparent approach to international space issues, guaranteeing the long-term sustainability of space activities.
The importance of the United Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) in shaping the future governance of outer space was emphasised, calling for greater international participation and continued implementation of its sustainability guidelines.
The endorsers of the declaration also welcomed the creation of the Expert Group on Space Situational Awareness. Under COPUOS, this group will be responsible for developing recommendations to strengthen international coordination and improve the transparency of outer space activities.
ITU gets support for its regulatory framework for frequency management
The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) gained wide support as the primary global entity responsible for the efficient and sustainable use of the radio-frequency spectrum and associated orbit.
A key point in ITU’s development mandate is the equitable access to spectrum and orbit resources, particularly by developing countries, therefore reducing the digital divide.
Based on Radio Regulations, an international treaty that governs the use of the radio-frequency spectrum and satellite orbits, the supported ITU framework for frequency management is essential for ITU Member States to coordinate their radiocommunication systems.
It aims to prevent harmful interference between satellite systems, as well as the development of the Member States’ space radiocommunication policies.
Endorsers stressed the importance of the framework for the protection of geostationary networks from harmful interference while ensuring that non-geostationary constellations can continue to operate effectively in shared frequency bands.
This is crucial to guarantee the continuity of satellite systems that support public space and governmental satellite services, while allowing the deployment and operation of non-geostationary networks within a technology-neutral framework that fosters innovation and access to the radio-frequency spectrum.
Towards a safe and sustainable future in space
As space activities continue to expand, their long-term sustainability will require both technological innovation and international cooperation.
The initiatives underway at ESA Space Safety and ESA Space Transportation are fundamental for the commitments outlined in the joint ESA/European Commission declaration: through its In-Space Servicing, Assembly and Manufacturing (ISAM) activities, ESA has been driving the development of critical technical building blocks for in-orbit transportation and services. The sustainability of our activities in space is a priority for ESA, reflected in its principles for Ecodesign, its Zero Debris approach and a responsible use of radio-frequency resources.
The outcomes of the summit, together with ESA’s technological innovation and operations, demonstrate a shared determination to build a safer, resilient and more sustainable space environment, while strengthening Europe’s ability to operate independently and competitively in orbit.
All of this, for a future in which space remains accessible, secure and beneficial for everyone.

Trump envoy vows to help unfreeze assets of close Russia ally

John Coale said Washington has approached Citibank about returning tens of millions of dollars to Belarus
US presidential envoy John Coale has vowed to work with American banks to release tens of millions of dollars in frozen assets belonging to Belarus, Russia’s close ally in Europe.
President Donald Trump’s envoy made the remarks in Minsk on Tuesday while meeting with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko as part of broader talks on normalizing economic ties and prisoner releases.
Lukashenko called for the release of around $43–44 million that he said was “stuck” in Citibank. “Pay back what you owe us,” he said.
“You are absolutely right. This money must be unfrozen and returned. We have approached the bank with a request to unfreeze these funds,” Coale said, adding that Washington was working on a concrete mechanism to facilitate the transfer.
Many Western countries imposed sanctions on Belarus in 2020 in response to a crackdown on protests following that year’s presidential election and expanded them in 2022, accusing the country of aiding Russia in its conflict with Ukraine. Lukashenko has denied helping Russia militarily and accused NATO of plotting to overthrow him. He has also claimed that the 2020 protests and riots in Minsk were incited from abroad.
Coale’s trips to Minsk last year ended with the release of dozens of opposition politicians and activists. During Tuesday’s talks, Lukashenko denied that the prosecution of opposition figures was politically motivated.
“If any Belarusian citizens – or foreign nationals present in the country – violate Belarusian law, we will certainly respond in accordance with the law,” he said.
Last week, the Belarusian president said he was prepared to discuss further agreements with the US only after the return of the assets frozen at Citibank. He made the statement while discussing the resumption of Belarusian fertilizer exports to the US.
The Trump administration has held several rounds of negotiations with Minsk that have facilitated the release of hundreds of prisoners and the easing of economic restrictions on Belarus. Washington has also lifted some restrictions, including sanctions on Belarusian state flag carrier Belavia.

Ukraine's drone strikes force 3 of Russia's largest diesel refineries to halt or slash output, Reuters reports

Half of Russia's six largest diesel-producing refineries have cut or completely halted output in September following Ukrainian drone attacks, Reuters reported Sept. 15.
Ukrainian attacks on Russian refineries have emerged as one of the most economically significant aspects of Kyiv's long-range drone strategy, contributing to nationwide fuel shortages and sharply reducing refinery output over the summer.
Recent attacks have hit several of Russia's biggest refining facilities, adding to mounting pressure on the country’s fuel supply and refining capacity.
Three of Russia's six primary diesel-producing facilities have shut down or significantly scaled back operations in September, Reuters reported, citing its analysis of market data.
The six facilities — the Kirishi refinery in Leningrad Oblast, NORSI in Nizhny Novgorod, Taneco in Tatarstan, the Omsk refinery in Siberia, the Perm refinery in Perm Krai, and the Volgograd refinery — account for half of Russia's total diesel production.
All have been targeted by Ukrainian drone attacks. Kirishi has shut down completely, while NORSI and the Volgograd refinery are only operating at about a fourth of their capacity, sources told Reuters.
In Leningrad Oblast, where the Kirishi refinery has halted operations, regional authorities have introduced fuel limits at gas stations. Governor Alexander Drozdenko said on Sept. 15 that the measures were "temporary" and would remain in effect until Oct. 1.
"The situation remains difficult," Drozdenko said.
Ukraine's oil infrastructure attacks have aggravated a domestic fuel supply crisis in Russia, contributing to export bans, price increases, and sales restrictions across the country.
U.S. President Donald Trump has recently drawn attention to Kyiv's campaign against Russian diesel infrastructure — by urging Ukraine to stop attacks and claiming that these strikes, not the war in Iran, are driving the global spike in fuel prices.
"Zelensky has to do one thing — he has to stop knocking out diesel fuel in Russia,” Trump told reporters on Sept. 13. "Let him go after targets but not diesel fuel, because he's causing a shortage of diesel. … This isn't done by the Middle East."
Trump then later claimed that "The World's Diesel price rise is mostly caused by the Russia/Ukraine war, not (the U.S. war with) Iran."
Evidence, however, points to the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran and closure of the Strait of Hormuz as the primary reason for the diesel price surge.

Ali Taher Ridge was IDF's most complex battle terrain yet, special forces Egoz chief tells 'Post'
The Egoz Special Forces commander told the Post that the battle to control Lebanon's Ali Taher Ridge was the military's most complex recent battles.

Of all of the battle spaces of the last three years, from Gaza to Syria to the West Bank to Lebanon, the Ali Taher Ridge battle was the most complex to win, Egoz Special Forces Commander Lt.-Col. "M" told The Jerusalem Post on Wednesday.
The operation to capture the ridge at the edge of the IDF's zone in southern Lebanon lasted months, as dozens of terrorists, estimated to number around 50, were entrenched inside the tunnel until the IDF took control on September 3.
The IDF gave the operation to destroy the 14 tunnel routes on the ridge, stretching about 5.4 km in total, the codename “Chisel of Flames.”

According to the IDF, the terrorist, Jihad Samih Mahmoud Ismail, had taken part in the killing of Capt. Omer Neutra, St.-Sgt. Oz Daniel, and Sgt. Shaked Dahan.
The IDF killed a Nukhba commander in the Khan Yunis area last week who had been involved in the abduction of several Armored Corps soldiers during the October 7 massacre, the military announced on Wednesday.
According to the IDF, the terrorist, Jihad Samih Mahmoud Ismail, had taken part in the killing of Capt. Omer Neutra, St.-Sgt. Oz Daniel, and Sgt. Shaked Dahan. Neutra and Daniel's remains were taken into Gaza, as was Sgt. Nimrod Cohen, who was alive.
Neutra was buried at Kiryat Shaul’s Military Cemetery in November, 2025, after being returned during the first phase of the US-brokered Gaza deal.

Rafael, Lockheed accelerate SPICE 1000 integration on Israeli F‑35s
Both the SPICE 1000 and SPICE 250 have been employed in the long‑range missions against Iran and Yemen.
Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and Lockheed Martin are working to accelerate the integration of SPICE 1000’s onto the Israel Air Force’s F-35 Adir stealth fighters.
According to Rafael, the integration of the F-35 is being carried out as a joint project between Rafael and Lockheed Martin, at Lockheed Martin facilities in the United States.
The Israeli defense giant made the announcement during AFA’s Air Space & Cyber conference in Washington.

Since February 2026, the United States Department of War (DOW), under the direction of President Donald Trump, has released an unprecedented number of documents, videos, and firsthand witness accounts detailing the United States’ extensive history of encounters with unidentified anomalous phenomena, or “UAP.”
Despite the questions that remain, this initiative under the Presidential Unsealing and Reporting System for UAP Encounters (PURSUE) has been nothing short of historic.
For more than 75 years, Americans pleading for the truth on the issue have been routinely ridiculed and even misled by their own government. It’s difficult to imagine the nation’s posture being anything other than one of obfuscation, secrecy, and resistance to transparency.
Documents, particularly those detailing reports from senior intelligence officials encountering “orbs”, are a stark departure from the U.S. government’s nearly century-long position of secrecy.
Lawmakers, however, have been left with more questions than answers. Who or what flies with such impunity over our sensitive military installations? Who owns this technology? Are they a threat to national security?
Across the Pacific, members of Japan’s National Diet are confronting the same questions.
The May 2026 file releases from the U.S. DOW disclosed two unresolved UAP incidents from the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command.
Japanese legislators only learned the details of these cases near their own territory after the American file release—not through any internal channels.
Democratic allies, it seems, face a shared challenge. For too long, elected officials in our respective nations have been denied adequate information about the phenomena operating in our common security environment.
And in the U.S., whenever we are informed, it’s only through the preferred methods and timing of unelected bureaucrats deeply entrenched in our national security apparatus.
In Japan, by contrast, the Ministry of Defense has stated that information may be made public when something arises that it determines should be explained.
But this raises a fundamental question: should the government alone decide what should be explained to the public?
If a grave national security threat truly exists, then elected representatives have been left with little choice but to entrust the security of their nations to the very institutions that have obscured the truth from us and even each other.
It is therefore incumbent upon us—Representatives solely accountable to the citizens of our respective nations—to work together and to seek the truth wherever we may find it; both for the good of our people and to defend against whatever threats we face from strategic competitors.
As mentioned above, among the files released by the U.S. DOW were highly significant firsthand reports from high-ranking officials in the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.
The documents detail a search operation at a classified missile testing site in the Western United States, explicitly for aerial phenomena:
En route, ground teams reported spotting a UAP on FLIR [Forward Looking Infrared], describing it as “super-hot,” low to the ground, and moving east then south at high speed.
The object then split into two and changed direction. Upon arrival, we scanned the area using NVG [Night Vision Goggles], FLIR, and the naked eye.
The ground team suddenly radioed that the object had risen from the ground, approached within ten feet of the helicopter, dropped below us, and then sped away.
The documents were accompanied by what the DOW labeled as “related photos.”
Accounts such as these are hardly “proof” of anything, but for elected officials, they do cement the reality of our national security concerns.
Missing from this account—or any account we have been allowed to access—is an answer to a fundamental question: What do the various U.S. government agencies believe these objects are?
Are they merely civilian drones? Do they represent technology belonging to a foreign actor? And if someone within the government does know, who decides that elected officials shouldn’t?

Members of Japan’s UAP Parliamentary League, led by former Japanese Defense Minister Yasukazu Hamada, share similar concerns.
DOW data, released through the Pentagon’s All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) in August of 2023, identified specific regions of Japan, particularly in the western and southern parts of the country, as being among the world’s notable hotspots for UAP reports.
One such instance occurred as recently as July of last year. Security guards at the Genkai Nuclear Power Station in Saga Prefecture observed three luminous objects in the sky above the facility.
The lights remained visible for nearly two hours; long enough for local police to arrive and observe them. The police stated that what they themselves observed was an airplane, leaving a discrepancy between the two accounts.
The incident was also recorded by Kyushu Electric Power’s security cameras, but the footage has not been made available even to members of the National Diet. Police have likewise declined to disclose related information on the grounds that the matter remains under investigation.
As a result, elected lawmakers still lack access to the information necessary to independently assess the incident, and to this day, members of Japan’s National Diet have no answers.
Like their American counterparts, Japanese lawmakers have been left without the tools or information for proper oversight despite reports of UAP operating near critical infrastructure within restricted airspace.
It is no longer acceptable for elected representatives to be agnostic on this issue. Events such as these, along with countless videos now made publicly available, are more than mere optical illusions and cannot be dismissed on account of prosaic explanations like parallax effect.
For many members of Congress and members of Japan’s UAP Parliamentary League, the evidence presented before us indicates an unknown technology.
Our understanding of what is technologically feasible in propulsion, the manipulation of physical matter, and even space-time itself is being challenged.
From what we know, our current defense capabilities appear insufficient. Furthermore, the origin of these phenomena remains unknown—not only to the U.S. and Japan, but seemingly to other nations as well.
China, for instance, recently established its own military body dedicated to investigating UAP, even supplementing human resources with artificial intelligence dedicated to tracking what the People’s Liberation Army refers to as “Unidentified Air Conditions.”
We are, by all indications, in a global arms race for technological supremacy, one that is rapidly rendering today’s weapons obsolete through advances in quantum technology, artificial intelligence, and drone warfare.
UAP and whatever technology allows them to operate with apparent impunity over sensitive military and nuclear installations could redefine the competition. If harnessed by democratic allies, breakthroughs could bolster deterrence and stability in the South China Sea.
Conversely, failure to establish a coordinated effort among democratic allies could give China an unforeseen technological advantage over a future invasion of Taiwan, making an already difficult fight impossible.
U.S. global leadership, along with the territorial integrity of the Pacific are at stake. For members of Japan’s National Diet, UAP investigations are of great national importance—an issue that demands cross-party attention.
As for their American counterparts, it’s clear representatives can’t reach the truth through traditional pathways that amount to asking the Central Intelligence Agency ‘nicely.’ It stands to reason that close alliances with democratic allies like Japan may be the most viable pathway for disclosure.
Indeed, if our tools are limited in scope, perhaps new revelations made by democratic allies provide a unique leverage point.
After all, it was the Trump administration’s disclosure under the PURSUE program that significantly increased pressure on Japan’s Defense Ministry to acknowledge its own previously undisclosed UAP-related activities.
This is why we, as elected representatives of our nations, have engaged the Emerging Technologies Interparliamentary Caucus (ETIC) as a platform for international dialogue regarding emerging technologies and the security threats presented by UAP.
Comprised of representatives from across the globe, the ETIC presents a rare opportunity to ensure elected representatives are equipped to assess potential threats, safeguard our nations, and prepare for the realities of emerging technologies in the 21st century.
Whether the phenomena we are encountering originate from an adversary or something else entirely, democratic nations cannot afford to be complacent.
The people of our nations deserve answers, and we intend to find them.

Vallée describes the data warehouse of some 260,000 sightings he built for the Bigelow Aerospace project funded by the Defense Intelligence Agency, why the work was cut off after roughly three years before the analysis he designed could run and the fact he has never been debriefed from his clearance.
He walks Ross through his correspondence with a master remote viewer he calls “Gilbert,” who describes being taken inside a laboratory built into a mountain and brought face to face with a living nonhuman entity that answered in configurations of light.
He also tells Ross that he once came face to face with an entity himself. Vallée says a member in good standing of the National Academy of Sciences told him the academy was warned it could lose funding if it moved into the subject, and after sixty years of investigation, he has concluded that nobody is actually in charge of the phenomenon inside the U.S. government.
The conversation closes on a 1966 Louisiana case in which a physics professor watched an object radiate energy on the order of a nuclear power station and on the piece of tree bark Vallée has kept ever since, waiting for a way to test it that does not cut into the wood.

Extraterrestrial encounters share space with Sasquatch sightings on themed cruise that exchanges experiences with alien-watching allies in Alaska’s capital
Tamara Roberts told the audience at Juneau’s first-ever UFO Town Hall that "I first knew that I believed in aliens when I watched ‘E.T.’ when I was 8 years old."
But she "never had that slap-your-mama kind of thing" until seeing strange lights above Thunder Mountain while driving home in the wee morning hours in September of 2021.
"I had lived at the base of this mountain for a very long time and this light was just totally out of place," said Roberts, a Juneau resident for 15 years.
She said she stopped at Melvin Park to film it and then again at home for more than an hour before going to bed — and after seeing the light reappear two nights later, she’s been watching the skies ever since.
"Needless to say I'm a believer, and I think that if people were to put their phones down and stop looking down and look up once in a while you would see that they're here all the time," she said.
"Thunder Mountain is my hot spot and if you ever get out there on a clear night I would definitely look up for change."
Narratives about close encounters of more than just the third kind, inexplicable sightings and a healthy dose of skepticism about media reporting of truths out there were shared among more than 100 people attending Sunday’s gathering at Elizabeth Peratrovich Hall.
Most were among an estimated 400 cruise passengers taking part in a voyage that, for the first time, added a UFO itinerary to a third annual Alaska Bigfoot Cruise.
"There was such huge crossover of the people that love both of them, so it worked out really well," said Marty Pippin, a partner with Gather Up Events, a Tennessee company that organizes such events in Alaska and elsewhere.
Roberts got a same-day invite to share her stories and images after Pippin learned about her “encounter” from a person at the Marie Drake Planetarium.
She told the audience that in addition to the strange encounters at Thunder Mountain, she experienced something else at the Mendenhall Glacier in October 2024 during an unusually busy night of auroral activity.
"This was something I could not explain, and the color coming off of it had so much color that the light would refract on top of the snow and just bounce off," she said.
The surrealism increased when she departed the glacier visitor center parking lot in her two-year-old car.
"It starts to stall, and I'm like, ‘Uh-uh, not today,’ you know," she said. "And I just gassed it and then my car started going again — and my headlights go out completely.
They flickered a couple of times and they just went out. And I got goosebumps now just telling you about it."
Her listeners were mostly visitors making a port stop during the inaugural "Missing 411 Alaska Cruise" aboard Royal Caribbean’s Voyager of the Seas (which has a maximum capacity of 4,000 passengers, so most aboard weren’t part of the Missing 411 cruise or the Bigfoot cruise group).
The seven-day roundtrip departing Seattle on Sept. 11 is also making port stops in Sitka, Skagway and Victoria, British Columbia, but the only other event on shore is a Bigfoot town hall scheduled Thursday in Victoria.
Among the visitors were Eva and Kevin Kusnier, a couple from Boise, Idaho, taking their first cruise after hearing about the joint-themed journey while at the PhenomeCon Conference in Utah last year.
"We always wanted to go to Alaska, so it was kind of a two-birds-with-one-stone kind of a thing," Kevin Kusnier said.
The first part of the town hall featured presentations and a question-and-answer session with three prominent paranormal personas taking part in themed events throughout the cruise.
The final hour of the three-hour event focused on personal tales from audience members, which the Kusniers stayed later for than some of their fellow passengers.
"That's what we came for was to hear the stories and all that stuff," Kevin Kusnier said. "It’s very interesting always to hear stories of other people, what they experienced, what they saw," Eva Kusnier agreed.

The couple, when the town hall was over, also shared their home security camera video of a mysterious light intrusion in their backyard with Pippin and a couple of others lingering behind.
The featured presenters were Joe Hauser (described in a town hall promotion as "a prominent investigator specializing in high-strangeness and Alaskan anomalies"), Chris Bledsoe ("a historic UFO experiencer and subject of the best-selling book ‘UFO of God’"), and David Paulides ("the former law enforcement officer and investigative journalist behind the famous ‘Missing 411’ series").
Paulides’ presentation was of timely interest to many attendees both because of the location and same-day release of his "Missing 411 Alaska," the latest book in his series that examines real-life cases of mysterious disappearances across North America.
He noted Alaska has a high frequency of planes mysteriously disappearing without wreckage or mayday calls, and many missing person cases contain only a small portion of known circumstances.
"In there, there's a story about, if you don't know, a Japan Airlines flight from Reykjavik to Alaska with a huge UFO that followed it," he said, adding, "there's also a story in there about a plane that disappeared with a UFO flying around it. There is a connection here, folks."
Bledsoe recounted what he calls a life-altering 2007 encounter in North Carolina when, broke and suffering from Crohn's disease, he was fishing at a river with his son and "three other guys" when he uttered a cry to God for help.
"These balls of fire came out of the sky — three of them, glowing red, fire going around them, 40-50 feet across, big as two-story houses," he said. "And four hours later they brought me back; my Crohn's disease was gone permanently."
Bledsoe said shortly after he reported the incident to authorities that officials with NASA and the CIA showed up at his house. And in the years since his interactions with the government and those strange visitors have continued.
"Until this very day I have been able to take as many as 1,000 people to 1,300 people — that was the biggest crowd this year — outside and call on them and here they come," he said of the mysterious visitors.
Questions from the audience, while often focusing on either UFOs or the existence of Bigfoot, did at times include both.
"Many of the orbs that have been videoed and photographed, inside the orbs we see faces — angel faces, cat faces, human faces, non-human faces — that is not in dispute in question," one woman asked.
"My question is, what do each of you feel is the connection between an orb appearing and then a Sasquatch being sighted?"

Hauser replied, "I think in some cases there may be no connection because there's lots of orbs around," but years ago there was a notable encounter during an experiment when "we wanted to raise the energy of the vortex, create a tipping point or an event horizon" to open a portal.
"We suspected there were three portals on the property based on what we've seen and experienced, and so we brought this machine in," he said.
"We raised the energy of the field from about 800, 900 milligauss up to 49,650 milligauss. An MRI is like 52,000 to 54,000 milligauss. The whole place was buzzing. We ran it for about 40 minutes."
Very shortly thereafter, "we asked the Bigfoot to show themselves to us if they came through the portal and they did," Hauser added.
"The first thing that came through was an orb, and that orb took off and flew over to this side of the building. A few seconds later a Bigfoot came across and he morphed up into a light beam (that) started floating around the house."
"Then another Bigfoot came over from this side — you could see the sagittal crest; he has no neck, shoulders are wide. He turned back, looked right at the camera and then he morphed up in a light beam too.
We don't have them turning back into orbs, but we have suspected for years that they travel in the form of an orb."
Praise for the courage of the three featured presenters was expressed by Joel Rutkowski, a Chapel Hill, North Carolina resident, who said "the mainstream media and legacy media doesn't report any of this stuff."
"The government, who works for the people, doesn't report any of this stuff," he said. "However, you guys have access to intel and people that we don't, right? And if you think about all these billionaires and millionaires, they're building bunkers, right?
So what do they know and what do you all know that we don't know that we should be prepared for, or start thinking about, or should we run for the hills?"
Bledsoe said, among other things, he wouldn’t pay much attention to what the billionaires are doing. Also, he said, don’t get distracted by what the government is doing such as sending the military to fight in wars and talking about armageddon.
"If we don't buy into it, we don't listen to them, and we don't give them power, and we don't watch the news and tell them to all take a hike," he said. "How many believe in the news anymore?
Nobody. So I'd say let's live our life, be happy, go out every day and do your thing, and hunt Bigfoot and have fun, and don't worry about all that stuff."

Video of multiple UFOs spotted across Hereford's night sky

Multiple streaks of light have been seen moving across the night sky.
The unexplained lights were spotted above Hereford by two residents, Karl Davis and Terri Michelle Edkins, on separate evenings this month.
Mr Davis witnessed the phenomenon on September 15, while Mrs Edkins saw the lights on September 12.
Both described seeing multiple streaks of light moving through the sky, with Mrs Edkins' family commenting on the unusual display during a video recording.
Mrs Edkins' family said: "It's actually shining different colours. It's actually shining red and blue.
"It's like a rainbow.
"It's weird."
Unidentified flying objects (UFOs), also referred to as unidentified aerial phenomena (UAPs), are objects or lights observed in the sky that have not been immediately identified or explained.
The Herefordshire county town of Leominster was rated as one of the country's UFO hotspots back in October 2025.
While most UFO sightings are later attributed to known objects or natural phenomena, a small number remain unexplained.
UFO sightings have been recorded throughout history, with notable increases in reports following the Second World War and during the early years of the Space Age.
Governments and organisations around the world have conducted investigations into UFO sightings, but none have confirmed claims of extraterrestrial origin.
Despite this, popular culture and media have fuelled ongoing public interest and speculation about the possibility of alien life.
Scientists and sceptical organisations, including the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry, generally attribute UFO sightings to misidentified natural or man-made objects, optical illusions, or deliberate hoaxes.
Nonetheless, a significant portion of the public continues to express belief in the existence of UFOs and the possibility of extraterrestrial visitors.

“Alien” tortoises offer second chance to species thought extinct

More than a century after the Floreana giant tortoise was declared extinct, scientists have uncovered an extraordinary twist in its story: descendants of the vanished species were found living on a remote Galápagos volcano and are now being returned to the island where their ancestors once roamed.
The discovery is part of an ambitious conservation effort in the Galápagos Islands, where giant tortoises have survived for millions of years but suffered devastating losses after pirates and whalers began visiting the archipelago in the 16th century, CNN Science writes.
According to CNN, between 100,000 and 200,000 giant tortoises disappeared over just two centuries.
Their ability to survive for up to a year without food or water made them especially valuable to sailors, who could keep the animals alive aboard ships as a source of fresh meat.
“And when these people wanted to eat, the tortoises were simply there, ready to go, and they had fresh meat,” Jorge Carrión, conservation director at the Galapagos Conservancy, told CNN.
The first Galápagos tortoise to become extinct was the Floreana tortoise, around 1850. The species was distinctive for its pronounced “saddle” shaped shell.
“They were very unusual tortoises, with a really pronounced shape — what we call a ‘saddle’ shape — that isn’t found anywhere else on the planet,” said James Gibbs, vice president of Science and Conservation at the Galapagos Conservancy and a professor at the State University of New York.
Then, in 2000, Gibbs and other researchers encountered unusual tortoises on Wolf Volcano, the highest point in the Galápagos.
“There were thousands of native species there … but it quickly became clear that there were also some strange tortoises,” Gibbs recalled.
Researchers initially called them “aliens” because they could not determine where they came from. Genetic testing later revealed that the animals belonged to the Floreana lineage.
Scientists believe humans may have inadvertently transported the tortoises to Wolf Volcano. Pirates and whalers routinely carried dozens or hundreds of tortoises aboard ships, and some may have been discarded when vessels exceeded their weight limits.
Nineteen of the animals were eventually transferred to the Fausto Llerena Land Tortoise Breeding Centre, where conservationists began breeding them.
The programme has produced remarkable results. The tortoises have already produced about 800 young and continue to reproduce at an average rate of 60 babies a year, Gibbs said.
In February 2026, 158 young tortoises were released on Floreana Island, equipped with satellite tracking devices. With support from NASA, scientists selected areas they believed would provide suitable habitat for the animals and potentially allow them to establish nesting populations.
The released tortoises are hybrids, carrying genetic material from Floreana tortoises and native tortoises from Wolf Volcano. Scientists have yet to find a pure Floreana tortoise, but Gibbs believes some may still survive in the volcano’s vast landscape.
“We haven’t yet found a pure Floreana tortoise, but we believe they exist,” Gibbs explained.
The animals are important far beyond their own survival. Conservationists describe giant tortoises as “ecosystem engineers” because they disperse seeds, reshape vegetation and create spaces used by other species.
“They grow slowly, yes, but they are very constant and persistent. It’s like the fable of the tortoise and the hare: in the end, the tortoise wins the race,” Gibbs said.
For conservationists, the tortoises’ return offers a powerful reminder that extinction is not always the end of the story.
As Gibbs put it: “They are such resilient, long-lived, and tenacious creatures that they have, in fact, allowed us to solve some of the problems we have created.”

Very sorry to hear this Rick was a very dear friend. We just saw him in person in Mt. Shasta. He was fine then and in great spirits.
He is loved by many.

He fell at home and had a heart attack – the order of that will be confirmed by the doctors. He is gifting his eyes to Lions vision, and being cremated at Hull & Hull.
He will be buried at Evergreen Washelli in North Seattle, Washington where family is buried. I am listed on his will as Executor. He has two storage units of books and belongings in Grants Pass, Oregon, which I could use help in sorting.
Rick just shared on his website a memorial to my husband Paul McLain who died Sept. 9 – ironic, yes? No decision yet on a service although Hull & Hull has a chapel facility.”
