The New Space Race Runs on Magnets. America Still Can't Make Enough

The original Space Race was a contest over industrial and technological capacity. The Soviet Union took the early lead, but the United States ultimately landed Apollo 11 on the Moon in 1969.
More than half a century later, Washington is in another strategic race, this time to rebuild the supply chain for materials used in fighter aircraft, missiles, drones, satellites, electric motors and advanced electronics.
One U.S.-listed company to watch in that effort is Evolution Metals & Technologies Corp. (NASDAQ:EMAT), which already produces rare earth permanent magnets commercially and has binding equipment orders expected to expand annual capacity roughly tenfold ahead of a major U.S. defense sourcing deadline.
China accounted for 91% of global refined magnet rare earth output and 94% of sintered permanent magnet production in 2024, according to the International Energy Agency.
Washington has committed billions of dollars to rebuilding the rare earth supply chain, from mining and refining through finished magnets, using grants, loans, equity investments and other support.
The goal is to rebuild a supply chain that took China decades to consolidate.
The Race Is About More Than Mining
Rare earth ore is only the starting line. After mining, material has to be separated, refined into individual oxides, converted into metals and alloys, and then manufactured into finished magnets with the right performance characteristics.
Each stage needs different equipment, technical know-how, qualified feedstock and customer certification.
Washington is funding companies at different points in that chain. MP Materials (NYSE:MP) has received federal backing for mining, separation and magnet production.
The Department of War also announced a $700 million conditional loan commitment for Vulcan Elements and ReElement Technologies to expand U.S. separation, metallization and NdFeB magnet capacity.
The Department of Energy separately announced nearly $1 billion in planned funding opportunities across critical-mineral mining, processing and manufacturing technologies.
The problem is that a mine does not solve a magnet shortage by itself. Neither does a refinery.
The United States and its allies need enough qualified capacity across the chain to turn non-China feedstock into finished magnets at commercial scale.

January 2027 Makes the Timeline Real
Beginning January 1, 2027, DFARS 252.225-7052 expands restrictions on neodymium-iron-boron magnets used in covered U.S. defense procurement to the entire supply chain, from mining of neodymium, iron and boron through finished magnet production. A
July 2026 executive order also tightened the conditions for waivers and directed the Department of War to accelerate qualification of alternative domestic and allied supply sources.
That creates a timing problem. The West is pouring capital into new capacity, but much of it still has to be built, commissioned, qualified and ramped. China remains dominant at the refining and magnet stages where the U.S. has the least room for error.
This is where Evolution Metals' position differs from many new entrants. Its operating subsidiaries have more than 18 years of commercial rare earth magnet production history.
The company currently produces magnets in South Korea and has binding purchase orders for 13 additional ULVAC sintered-magnet machines scheduled for delivery and installation in November 2026.
Evolution Metals says the equipment is expected to increase annual rare earth magnet capacity from about 1,000 metric tons to about 10,000 metric tons, including roughly 6,000 metric tons of high-performance sintered magnets.
Evolution Metals Is Scaling an Existing Platform
Evolution Metals has also begun building the non-China inputs and infrastructure needed for that expansion.
In July, the company took delivery of its first shipment of NdPr metal (neodymium-praseodymium) sourced from SRE Vietnam under its agreement with Japan-based Senri Trading.
Evolution Metals says the non-China feedstock is intended for production of magnets compliant with DFARS 252.225-7052. It has reported Tier-1 OEM quality certifications across six grades of high-performance sintered NdFeB magnets.
In South Korea, the company has agreed to principal terms for a large power expansion and plans to expand its Pohang manufacturing footprint, with a local government grant conditionally approved in connection with the project.
Management has guided to $400 million to $460 million in revenue for fiscal 2027, based on the expected first full-year contribution from the expanded Pohang capacity.
The outlook is not based on contracted volumes and assumes, among other things, timely equipment commissioning, customer qualification, conversion of prospective demand into orders and shipments, sufficient feedstock and working capital, and the planned production ramp.
The modern rare earth race will be decided by which supply chains can move material from compliant feedstock to qualified finished magnets, at scale, quickly enough for defense and industrial customers that need alternatives to China.
Evolution Metals enters that race from a platform already producing commercially, and while the planned November expansion still has to be executed, that existing production base could matter as buyers race to qualify compliant supply ahead of the January 2027 deadline.

Space Delta 13, headquartered at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, serves as the Space Force unit responsible for providing professional continuing education and professional military education to all Guardians.
Subordinate units include those conducting Space Force Officer PME, Enlisted PME, and the National Security Space Institute.
Dr. Thomas Griffy, formerly the Delta 13 deputy director, will serve as interim director.

ESA starts next phase of IRIS² evolution through Low-LEO activities

The European Space Agency (ESA) has signed 18 consolidation contracts bringing together nearly 80 companies to study new secure and resilient connectivity services.
The contracts also cover associated mission concepts and aim to shape the future of the EU's secure connectivity constellation – IRIS² – which will provide Europeans with resilient communications, when and where it matters most.
The companies will develop relevant use cases and services, and trade-off different mission concepts as part of ESA’s Low-LEO (low Earth orbit) activities, helping to explore how IRIS² capabilities could evolve as new European needs emerge.
Signed on 17 September at the ESA European Space Astronomy Centre (ESAC) in Madrid, Spain, the agreements mark the start of a new phase of studies under the ESA Programme Related to EU Secure Connectivity.
The services being explored are aimed at governmental users and range from secure governmental broadband, maritime operations and aviation to data relay and tasking, among others.
These contracts will strengthen Europe’s industrial base while giving smaller and mid-sized companies opportunities to contribute to the development and validation of new secure connectivity services through the Low-LEO layer.
The resulting capabilities could, subject to their successful maturation and future programme decisions, support a potential evolution of the main EU IRIS² system as user needs evolve.
Amounting to a total of €20 million, the contracts were signed by Laurent Jaffart, ESA’s Director of Resilience, Navigation and Connectivity, together with representatives from the participating industry teams, at an event attended by representatives of the European Commission.
“Space is evolving rapidly, and Europe needs to evolve with it. Low-LEO provides the opportunity to explore new ideas and capabilities, test them in practice and learn from the results.
This ability to innovate, adapt and build on experience will be essential as we develop the next generation of secure and resilient connectivity for Europe.
We look forward to continuing to work hand-in-hand with the European Commission and industry on the future of IRIS²,” said Laurent Jaffart, Director of ESA’s Resilience, Navigation and Connectivity.
What is IRIS²?
Under the overall responsibility of the European Commission, IRIS² is Europe’s initiative to build a secure and resilient space-based connectivity network.
In these challenging times, its aim is to strengthen Europe’s strategic autonomy by providing reliable connectivity and reducing dependence on external systems.
ESA acts on behalf of the European Commission as the qualification and validation authority for the governmental infrastructure of the EU's Secure Connectivity Programme.
It manages development and validation contracts supporting the initial space and ground segments, verifies end-to-end system, service, and security performance against EC requirements, and coordinates these activities with ESA’s own programme.

In-orbit validation before integration
Based on the outcomes of these activities, ESA will initiate a number of procurements for the subsequent Implementation phase for a concrete set of missions, planned for implementation along 2027–2029, to validate the targeted services in orbit at pre-operational level, along with relevant user groups and in close coordination with the European Commission.
These results will help prioritise those services that could potentially be incorporated into future versions of EU IRIS², supporting Europe’s ability to adapt to an ever-changing and challenging global landscape.

China conducted two successful space launches Thursday, sending a new batch of low-orbit internet satellites and two commercial interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) remote-sensing satellites into orbit, state media reported.
The first launch took place at 8.32 a.m. (0032 GMT) from the Hainan commercial spacecraft launch site. A Long March-12 rocket successfully placed the 25th group of low-orbit internet satellites into orbit, according to the Global Times.
It was the 667th launch of the Long March rocket family.
At 10.40 a.m. (0240 GMT), a Kuaizhou-11 Y3 solid-fuel rocket launched from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwestern China, carrying two satellites into preset orbit.
It was the seventh mission of the Kuaizhou-11 rocket and the 40th launch of the Kuaizhou rocket series.

Additional US sanctions against Russia would make it more difficult to reach a settlement of the Ukraine conflict, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said.
The US House of Representatives passed the legislation on Wednesday, following Senate approval last month, sending it to President Donald Trump for his signature. The bill allows Trump to impose tariffs of up to 100% on major buyers of Russian oil and gas.
Commenting on the measure on Thursday, Peskov described it as an “unfriendly” move and said that Moscow was closely following its progress.
“Of course, the introduction of any additional sanctions by the US will definitely complicate efforts to find a peaceful settlement in Ukraine,” he told reporters.
The legislation, named after the late Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, had remained stalled for months as Trump pursued diplomatic efforts to settle the conflict. Graham, a vocal supporter of Kiev, had championed tougher sanctions against Russia.
US-mediated efforts to resolve the conflict largely paused after Trump launched a war against Iran in late February. Diplomatic contacts resumed earlier this month, when White House envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner visited Moscow and Kiev.
The bill also targets Russia’s energy and defense sectors and its so-called “shadow fleet” of tankers allegedly used to evade sanctions. Its tariff provisions target major buyers of Russian energy, including China and India.
New Delhi said on Thursday that it was monitoring developments and would take “all necessary measures” to protect its economic interests and energy security. India has also warned the US that tariffs imposed over purchases of Russian oil could affect bilateral ties.
The measure faced opposition from many House Democrats, who argued that it could raise costs for Americans. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries said that the legislation could give the president “unfettered authority” to impose tariffs.
Moscow has repeatedly rejected Western sanctions as illegal and ineffective. President Vladimir Putin has said that Russia has adapted its economy to mitigate their impact despite tens of thousands of restrictive measures imposed on the country.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has released footage of Ukrainian drones striking a refinery in Russia and several aircraft at an airfield in Rostov.

Details: Ukraine's General Staff later reported strikes on a Russian airfield and a refinery in Yaroslavl.
Specifically, the Rostov-on-Don (Tsentralnyi) airfield in Russia's Rostov Oblast was struck. A fire was recorded, followed by detonation at the facility.
In addition, the destruction of two An-26 transport aircraft, one An-12 transport aircraft and three helicopters has been confirmed.
The Slavneft-YANOS oil refinery in Russia's Yaroslavl Oblast was also struck: a hit and fire were reported at the primary oil distillation unit.
For reference: Slavneft-YANOS is one of Russia's largest oil refining companies and is part of Slavneft PJSC. Its capacity is around 15 million tonnes of oil per year.
The plant carries out a full cycle of oil refining and produces motor petrol, diesel, aviation fuel, fuel oil, bitumen and other petroleum products.
The plant supports the needs of Russia's armed forces.
Background: Drones attacked several areas in Russia on the night of 16-17 September. A military air base in Rostov-on-Don and an oil refinery in Yaroslavl may have been among the targets.

Flight operations were briefly paused at Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C., Wednesday night after pilots on two separate aircraft reported a drone flying over the runway and a taxiway, according to authorities and air traffic control recordings – an alarming development because of the sensitivity of the highly restricted airspace.
"We saw like a drone or something that went flying by, probably halfway down the runway on final," the pilot of American Eagle Flight 5128 told air traffic controllers around 8 p.m.
Another pilot on a nearby runway also reported spotting something that appeared to be a drone.
"I saw a light that I thought might have been a drone too," a Vista America pilot said.
In a statement to ABC, the Federal Aviation Administration said it "briefly paused departures at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport for about 20 minutes after two flight crews reported seeing a drone near Runway 19." The agency said local and federal authorities were notified.
The FBI told ABC News, "While we do not have a comment on specific incidents, the FBI works with our federal and local law enforcement partners to detect, track, and investigate illegal drone activity that could potentially threaten aviation safety, critical infrastructure, or public safety."
It is unclear if a drone was located in the area.

The report of a drone is alarming as Washington, D.C., has the most restricted airspace in the nation and GPS technology in drones adds a geofence around the Washington airspace.
Drones, or unmanned aircraft systems, either won't lift off the ground or their propellers won't spin if there is an attempt to operate one in the D.C. airspace. In order for a drone to fly in the airspace, it would need to have special authorization from the FAA or have been tampered with.
Though unauthorized drone operations are prohibited near airports as they pose safety risks to planes, drone reports are not uncommon, and the FAA says it receives more than a 100 reports of drone sightings near airports every month.
Those operating a drone in a restricted area could face fines and criminal charges, including possible jail time, under federal regulations.

In his question for written answer (E-002983/2026) with reference to Article 144 of the Rules of Procedure, German FDP Member of the European Parliament and Secretary-General of the FDP North Rhine-Westphalia, Moritz Körner, submitted the inquiry on 15 July 2026.
Under the title “UAP allegations” Körner writes:
“In a June 2023 NewsNation interview, then US Senator Marco Rubio said that several current or former government personnel had approached the US Senate Intelligence Committee with what he called ‘firsthand knowledge or firsthand claims’ concerning matters related to unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP). He added that many had held high-level security clearances and senior government positions. The current US Government has been regularly releasing tranches of documents on this issue.
1.Has the Commission verified the documents and the statements of its US counterparts on this issue?
2.Does the Commission consider the publications of the US administration to be at all serious?
3.Does the Commission rule out the existence of UAP/UFOs?”

Moritz Körner’s questions were then answered on 25 August 2026 by the EU Commissioner for Defence and Space, the Lithuanian politician Andrius Kubilius, “on behalf of the European Commission” as follows:
The area of unidentified anomalous phenomenon ( UAP) is considered a competence of the Member States, allowing them to address these phenomena according to the national security needs.
For example, France has established the Unidentified Aerospace Phenomena Research and Information Group (GEIPAN). Therefore, the Commission is not in a position to verify any document or make any consideration regarding publications on this topic.
The Commission and the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President remain dedicated to collaborating with stakeholders to ensure the safety and security of the space environment.“
UFO Research in Europe
In addition to the state-run “Groupe d’études et d’informations sur les phénomènes aérospatiaux non identifiés” (GEIPAN) mentioned by Kubilius, which has been investigating UFO sightings in France for the French space agency CNES since 1977, there are numerous civilian citizen-science research organizations in the EU Member States dedicated to the investigation and research of UFOs/UAPs.
For example, in Germany, UFO sightings by the public can be reported to the “Gesellschaft zur Erforschung des UFO-Phänomens” (GEP).
In addition, the University of Würzburg is home to the “Interdisciplinary Research Center for Extraterrestrial Studies” (IFEX), one of the few academic research centers in Europe and worldwide where, in addition to space technologies, UFOs and UAPs are officially researched as part of a university’s research portfolio.
In addition, the British Ministry of Defence has published the files of its former UFO office through the country’s National Archives.
Government UFO investigations and releases of files have also taken place, and continue to take place, in Belgium, Germany, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Ukraine.

The fundamental challenge in resolving the nature of Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) lies with acquiring definitive evidence beyond any reasonable doubt. The quality of the scientific data must be good enough to make skeptics sound unreasonable.
A single high-resolution image of a UAP or direct access to UAP materials is worth more than a million blurry images or eight billion likes on social media. How can we get that data?
One way is to check the archives of the U.S. government. The Pentagon, the Intelligence Community, the Space Command and the FBI have been collecting enormous data over the past century for the benefit of national security.
This database is much larger than all the data collected by astronomical observatories in human history, because the funding allocated to collect it exceeds the funding for science by at least two orders of magnitude.
Despite this data collection being motivated by down-to-Earth concerns, it could reveal a new cosmic truth akin to finding a package in our mailbox.
Such a finding would inform us that we are not at the top of the cosmic food chain because the senders of the package managed to reach us before we reached them.
This would bring a much-needed sense of cosmic modesty to our long-term priorities. International politics will be dwarfed by interplanetary politics.
The U.S. government already made cosmic discoveries.
In the 1960s, the Vela satellites attempted to verify the compliance of the Soviet Union with the Partial Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, and discovered gamma-ray bursts as the birth sites of black holes at the edge of the observable universe (as reviewed here).
Of course, we do not need the U.S. government to tell us about unusual objects in the sky. We can simply look up. The sky is not classified.
Only the most advanced sensors operated by the U.S. government are classified. This is the rationale for the Galileo Project, which under my leadership aims to resolve the nature of UAP by constructing dedicated new observatories.
Astronomical observatories focus on a small portion of the sky at any given time and ignore objects that maneuver in the Earth’s atmosphere and hence are different from meteors.
The existing Galileo Observatories offer a new architecture whereby a set of infrared cameras, visible-light cameras, radio sensors and acoustic microphones monitor the entire sky at all times.
A new paper reporting the first triangulation results from the Galileo research team will be shared with the public shortly. The Galileo Project is currently designing its fourth observatory in Carl Sagan’s old residence in Ithaca, New York.
The design of this observatory will be unique, aiming to resolve UAP orbs by imaging them at high resolution and taking their spectrum to infer their composition. The orb imager observatory concept was described here.

In pursuing the government archives path, the UAP Science Advisory Council under my leadership is collaborating the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), the All-Domain Anomaly Resolution Office in the Pentagon (AARO), the FBI, the Intelligence Community and the White House, following President Trump’s directive here. The council studies data that was released through the Presidential Unsealing and Reporting System for UAP Encounters (PURSUE).
It also recommends the collection of new data by placing new sensors in locations where UAPs were reported by government and military personnel.
We are all hoping that the volume of available data will increase considerably thanks to the memo issued on July 31, 2026 by the Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence, Aaron Lukas.
I applaud the leadership of Aaron Lukas and everyone working to make full UAP disclosure possible.
We are arriving at a moment of truth for UAP whistleblowers who argued over the years that they are legally refrained from revealing federal secrets by non-disclosure agreements (NDAs).
People with relevant knowledge are encouraged to come forward and usher in a new era of UAP disclosure.
The UAP Science Advisory Council is ready to work with whistleblowers and government partners to independently evaluate the evidence and help verify the science wherever the data leads.

The six-part docuseries draws from more than one million archival items while exploring alien encounters, prophetic dreams and messages from beyond.
*What if telepathy, UFO encounters, near-death experiences, and messages from the dead are pieces of the same unexplained mystery?
That question drives “Archive X: Unexplained Phenomena,” a new six-part docuseries premiering in October. Professor Jeffrey J. Kripal hosts the show, which draws from Rice University’s Center for the Impossible.
The collection contains more than one million documents, recordings, and files examining paranormal experiences and questions surrounding human consciousness. Some materials date back nearly a century.

Six Mysteries Take Center Stage
Each episode pairs archival research with people describing personal experiences involving phenomena that remain difficult to explain.
The premiere, “Telepathic Children,” follows two non-verbal autistic girls whose mothers believe they communicate telepathically.
The girls describe a realm called “The Hill,” while archival footage introduces earlier research into children believed to possess psychic abilities.
“Alien Abduction” follows on Oct. 8, exploring childhood encounters with mysterious beings and messages that experiencers believe concern humanity’s future.
“Dark Visions,” arriving Oct. 15, examines prophetic dreams, remote viewing and government research into precognition.
The Oct. 22 episode, “Speaking with the Dead,” focuses on mediums, including one who reportedly assists with murder investigations.
“Near Death Experience” arrives Oct. 29 and follows two women who report unusual abilities after surviving near-death experiences.
The finale, “Aliens & Demons,” premieres Nov. 5 and examines possible connections among alleged alien encounters, demonic entities and spiritual warfare.
Historic Research Meets New Testimony
The archives featured in the series include work from Harvard psychiatrist Dr. John E. Mack and bestselling author Whitley Strieber.
Mack became known for studying people who reported alien-abduction experiences, bringing academic attention to accounts often dismissed outside paranormal circles.
Rice University says much of “Archive X” was filmed around its Woodson Research Center, where researchers can access the collection.
The series does not simply ask whether individual experiences are real. Instead, it explores whether experiences usually separated into categories could share deeper connections involving consciousness, perception and the unknown.
“Archive X: Unexplained Phenomena” premieres Thursday, Oct. 1, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on SundanceTV, AMC+ and All Reality. New episodes arrive weekly through Nov. 5.
