President Donald Trump was not thrilled to see CNN reporter Kaitlan Collins amid the hoard of journalists who were waiting to speak to him on Tuesday morning as he entered the United Nations.
The president started off by saying he was honored to be at the UN — before immediately noticing CNN was among the outlets in front of him. He then pivoted to bashing the channel, saying they should not be there following his banon the outlet, as well as MS NOW and Politico, last week.
“I’m surprised that CNN is here covering me. You shouldn’t be here!” Trump said.
Collins barked back “the United Nations allowed us in, sir,”KEK
“You should not be here covering me,” Trump continued. “You said you weren’t going to cover me, you shouldn’t be covering me.”
He then put up his right hand as if to say “shut up” when reporters started shouting questions at him. Trump then reiterated he was honored to be there, before walking away with First Lady Melania Trump flanking him.
The brief exchange comes after the Trump administration doubled down on its ban a day earlier by pulling CNN off its scheduled TV pool assignment.
Trump defended the ban in a Truth Social post, saying the free press is “something which I cherish” — but he viewed the outlets as nothing more than “FAKE NEWS” peddlers.
“It is instituting an assault on the FAKE NEWS, something that has grown like Cancer in our beloved United States of America,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “It is corrupt, purposeful, pervasive, fully coordinated, and totally out of control. It is a threat to our National Security, and must be stopped, NOW! Thank you for your attention to this matter.”
Soon after, the three outlets banded together and sued the White House over the ban. The outlets claimed the ban “brazenly discriminates based on editorial viewpoint” and has already caused “irreparable harm” to CNN, MS NOW, and Politico.
Earlier on Tuesday,Secretary of State Marco Rubio went to bat for Trump’s ban during a fairly feisty interview on NBC Today, saying he “can’t blame” the president because it often sounds like mainstream reporters are “rooting for Iran.” He then argued with co-host Craig Melvin about whether the word “ban” was even appropriate.
