Mirrored Meteor and Milky Way

On August 15, this perseid meteor streaked through night skies over the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos at La Palma, Canary Islands, Spain. The bright and colorful meteor trail was captured next to the central Milky Way, whose dark interstellar dust clouds and luminous starlight reach above the horizon. In the foreground of this tantalizing celestial scene is the 23 meter diameter mirror of the prototype Large-Sized Telescope (LST-1). LST-1 is the first telescope constructed at the northern hemisphere site of the innovative Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory. With 198 hexagonal mirror segments and a large, high-efficiency, pixelized camera, LST-1 is designed to detect extremely brief, atmospheric visible light flashes. Lasting about a billionth of a second, the visible light flashes are triggered by energetic gamma-rays from cosmic sources such as distant active galaxies and gamma-ray bursts. Of course, on that night some individual mirror segments of LST-1 also reflected the atmospheric flash of the bright perseid meteor.

September's Harvest Moon rises tonight as the first full moon of Autumn.

Look east tonight to see September's full "Harvest Moon" rise into the autumn sky. Here's what to expect on Sept. 26.

The Harvest Moon is the name given to the full moon that falls closest to the autumn equinox, which this year marked the beginning of astronomical autumn in the Northern Hemisphere on Sept. 22.

September's full moon will reach its point of maximum illumination at 12:49 p.m. EDT (1649 GMT), when the moon shines opposite the sun in Earth's sky, appearing fully illuminated from our perspective.

What to expect from the Harvest Moon

The full Harvest Moon rises over the eastern horizon around sunset on Sept. 26, as the diamond formation of stars belonging to the Great Square of Pegasus sparkling higher in the Autumn sky.

You may notice the moon adopt a yellow-orange color around moonrise, as sunlight reflected off its surface is scattered by Earth's atmosphere while close to the horizon.

The lunar disk will return to its usual silvery luster upon rising higher into the autumn sky, as its light passes through less of Earth's atmosphere.

Look for Saturn shining as a bright star-like object a little over 5 degrees below the moon for viewers in the U.S. about an hour after moonrise.

A 6-inch telescope will help reveal its iconic ring system, along with bright points of light representing the large moons Titan, Rhea, Dione, Iapetus, Tethys and Enceladus.

Turn your scope on the moon and you'll see evidence of its violent past etched across the lunar surface. Bright rays mark material blasted outward by relatively recent impacts, while vast, dark lunar seas lie where basaltic lava flooded ancient craters.

September's Harvest Moon will track a steady arc over the southern horizon as the night unfolds, before finally setting in the west as dawn breaks on Sept. 27.

Station Gets Ready for SpaceX Crew Swap During Health Research

Four Expedition 75 crew members are nearing the end of their stay aboard the International Space Station and are awaiting the crew that will replace them next week.

Meanwhile, the orbital residents wrapped up their work week with biomedical science, a relaxation study, and a lunar landing simulation, all three experiments designed to assist crews on future missions beyond low Earth orbit.

NASA astronauts Jessica Meir and Jack Hathaway along with ESA (European Space Agency) astronaut Sophie Adenot and Roscosmos cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev are packing their personal items and other cargo inside the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft that will fly them back to Earth in October.

The quartet gathered together on Friday and joined flight controllers on the ground to run a simulation of the atmospheric reentry procedures they will use inside Dragon when they experience Earth’s gravity again after nearly eight months in space.

Fedyaev also tested the lower body negative pressure suit from Roscosmos that reverses space-caused fluid shifts from the head toward the feet with assistance from flight engineer Anna Kikina.

The specialized suit may ease his adjustment to Earth’s gravity after the completion of his mission next month.

NASA’s SpaceX Crew-13 mission will replace the homebound station crew after it launches inside a Dragon atop a Falcon 9 rocket Oct. 1 from Florida’s Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.

NASA astronaut Jessica Watkins will command Dragon with NASA astronaut Luke Delaney piloting the spacecraft during the flight to the orbital complex.

The NASA duo will be flanked by mission specialists Josh Kutryk of CSA (Canadian Space Agency) and Sergey Teteryatnikov of Roscosmos.

The quartet began its quarantine at Johnson Space Center and will travel to Kennedy Space Center on Saturday, Sept. 26, for final mission preparations.

Back aboard the space station, science continues informing doctors how the human body adapts to living and working long term in weightlessness.

Station commander Meir collected her blood sample, spun it in a centrifuge, then stowed it in a science freezer with assistance from flight engineer Hathaway.

Scientists will analyze the blood sample as part of an effort to gain insights into space-caused bone loss, which looks similar to osteoporosis on Earth, to protect crews traveling farther away from Earth.

Adenot collected and stowed a saliva sample for the RelaxPro investigation that explores using mindfulness and meditation exercises to ease stress and promote relaxation during a long duration spaceflight.

Doctors will analyze the saliva samples to detect biochemical evidence of how stress, sleep patterns, and the immune system change during spaceflight.

Adenot later checked the functionality of lunar landing simulation hardware, including a headset and hand controllers, in coordination with specialists on the ground.

The Manual Piloting study may help researchers understand how microgravity can affect cognitive function while operating a spacecraft.

NASA flight engineer Anil Menon focused on maintenance Friday as he tested and fitted components of a new cooling system that will soon be installed in the Destiny laboratory module.

Afterward, Menon wrapped up his shift with a proficiency test to ensure his familiarity with Canadarm2 robotic arm operations.

Roscosmos flight engineer Pyotr Dubrov continued unpacking hardware and supplies from inside the Progress 96 cargo spacecraft on Friday.

He also attached sensors to himself that measured his heart activity as he jogged on the Zvezda service module’s treadmill for a fitness assessment.

NASA’s Swift Powers On Third Instrument, Restarts Automated Slewing

NASA’s Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory has resumed use of its third science instrument, the Burst Alert Telescope, after the mission returned to data collection in August.

Flight controllers have also allowed the spacecraft to resume automatically repointing its other telescopes to examine new high-energy flashes in the sky.

The return to normal operations follows the scaling back of a commercial mission that would have boosted Swift to a higher altitude.

Swift team members confirmed that the Burst Alert Telescope was calibrated and detecting gamma rays, the highest energy form of light, on Sept. 18.

They had halted use of the instrument, which sees 16% of the sky at a time, in April to reduce power consumption.

This allowed Swift’s solar panels to be best positioned to reduce drag and extend the satellite’s time in orbit ahead of the boost effort.

Usually, the flight operations team at Penn State in University Park sends a plan to Swift that tells the observatory which cosmic objects and events to observe each day.

When the Burst Alert Telescope detects a flare of gamma rays, though, Swift is designed to interrupt the plan and automatically point its Ultraviolet/Optical and X-ray telescopes at the outburst.

In December 2025, the science operations team started swapping around 25% of the planned science targets for points in the sky that would minimize drag when Swift was trained on them.

By February, the team had switched over to this approach entirely, eliminating Burst Alert Telescope detection slews.

The team allowed Swift to return to automated pointing on Sept. 21 after the gamma-ray instrument resumed data collection.

The return to science has caused Swift to resume its rapid sinking.

It is now located around 200 miles (325 kilometers) above Earth. Below 185 miles (300 kilometers), spacecraft operations become more difficult and science observations will likely cease.

The team estimates Swift will reach this threshold sometime in early to mid-October.

NASA Welcomes San Marino Signing the Artemis Accords

The Republic of San Marino became the 76th signatory to the Artemis Accords during a ceremony in the city of Rimini on Friday with NASA and U.S. Department of State officials present.

“San Marino joins a growing coalition of like-minded nations committed to the peaceful, transparent, and responsible exploration of space,” said NASA Deputy Administrator Matt Anderson. 

“President Trump has directed NASA to build a Moon Base and establish an enduring presence on the lunar surface. As we do, we are putting the principles of the Accords into practice.

NASA has invited every Artemis Accords signatory to participate in our return to the Moon through scientific payloads, technology demonstrations, CubeSats, and other capabilities. San Marino is already looking toward that future.”

Minister of Industry and Technological Research Rossano Fabbri signed on behalf of San Marino. Gregory Mann, NASA Europe representative, participated in the ceremony with the U.S. Consul General in Florence Joseph Tordella.  

“We are pleased and honored that the Republic of San Marino has been welcomed as the 76th signatory state of the Artemis Accords,” said Fabbri.

“We fully share the principles and values expressed in the Artemis Accords, and we are convinced that the signatory states united under the Accords will make a tangible contribution to promoting international cooperation in space and ensuring the use of space for peaceful purposes.”

DAF to adopt standardized Religious Affiliation Codes: Action required in vMPF

The Department of the Air Force is updating its personnel data systems to align with the Department of War's standardized list of Religious Affiliation Codes.

Starting September 25, 2026, the Military Personnel Data System and associated accessions systems have transitioned away from legacy "Faith and Belief Codes.”

Airmen and Guardians must take action to update their RAC in the Virtual Military Personnel Flight and certify their Record of Emergency Data is accurate.

These mandatory actions must be completed by October 16, 2026, for active duty and November 9, 2026, for Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard.

Airmen and Guardians who fail to update their RAC within this selection window will have their records automatically realigned according to an approved transition construct.

"Our commitment to the spiritual readiness and religious freedom of every Airman and Guardian remains steadfast," said Richard Anderson, assistant secretary of the Air Force for Manpower and Reserve Affairs.

"Transitioning to these standardized codes ensures our Chaplain Corps has the accurate demographic data they need to provide tailored resources and support to our Service members, while continuing to respect their individual convictions."

When selecting a religious preference for identification tags (commonly known as "dog tags"), Airmen and Guardians are not limited to choosing from the standardized vMPF list. Members retain flexibility to specify their preference on their ID tags as they see fit.

This transition is strictly an administrative measure. Standardizing the codes improves demographic awareness, helping DAF chaplains better understand the religious composition of their units and optimize resource planning.

The change in data codes does not indicate, nor will it result in any reduction or alteration of chaplain services or religious support.

On Saturday, September 26 at 7:00 a.m. PT, Falcon 9 launched the USSF-385 mission from Space Launch Complex 4E (SLC-4E) at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.

This was the 10th flight for the first stage booster supporting this mission, which previously launched NROL-95 and eight Starlink missions.

Following stage separation, the first stage landed on the Of Course I Still Love You droneship, which was stationed in the Pacific Ocean.

There was the possibility that residents of Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, and Ventura counties may have heard one or more sonic booms during the launch, but what residents experienced depended on weather and other conditions.

Trump told Zelensky to meet with Putin in Moscow – Bloomberg

The suggestion was reportedly made during a meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly

US President Donald Trump reportedly urged Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky to travel to Moscow for peace talks with President Vladimir Putin, Bloomberg reports, citing sources close to Zelensky. Russia has said Zelensky can visit Moscow any time.

The US president made the suggestion during a meeting with Zelensky on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly this week, the outlet reported. The Ukrainian leader rejected the idea, people familiar with the conversation told Bloomberg, adding that Trump’s proposal “upset him.”

Zelensky was visibly irritated by journalists outside UN headquarters on Wednesday. Pressed about when he might visit Moscow, he replied: “On a f**king missile!”

Earlier this week, Ukraine and 51 of its backers released a statement demanding that Russia accept an “immediate and unconditional ceasefire” so peace talks can begin.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Moscow will not halt its military operation, accusing Ukraine’s European sponsors of seeking a pause only “to pump the Kiev regime with weapons.”

Trump recently renewed efforts to resolve the Ukraine conflict. His special envoy, Steve Witkoff, and son-in-law Jared Kushner traveled to Moscow and Kiev earlier this month.

Witkoff said afterward that he felt good about the discussions and that the Trump administration hopes diplomacy can bring an end to the conflict.

Moscow has said it is ready to settle the Ukraine conflict as long as the root causes are addressed and the realities on the ground are taken into account.

Russia’s demands include Ukraine abandoning its plans to join NATO and adopting a neutral status, accepting restrictions on its military, and formally recognizing Crimea and four other former Ukrainian regions as Russian territory.

Crimea voted to join Russia shortly after the 2014 Western-backed coup in Kiev. The regions of Donetsk, Lugansk, Zaporozhye, and Kherson held referendums in September 2022.

Kiev has consistently rejected Moscow’s conditions, insisting on joining NATO and restoring control over all territories that it claims.

Zelensky has said, however, that he wants to meet with Putin in person to settle the conflict, even though he legally barred himself from talks with the Russian leader.

Moscow has cited Kiev’s aggressive posture and the hostile position of its European backers as major obstacles to a peace settlement.

The Kremlin has nevertheless maintained that it is ready to welcome Zelensky to Moscow if he truly wishes to reach a deal, even though Russia considers him illegitimate, as his presidential term expired more than two years ago and he has not called a new election.

On Wednesday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that Russia is ready to provide security guarantees to Zelensky if he travels to Moscow.

Russia and Ukraine traded large-scale drone and air attacks overnight, with both sides reporting casualties and strikes on energy, communications and logistics infrastructure.

Authorities in Ukraine’s northeastern Sumy region said Russian guided bombs and drones killed one person and injured 13 others, including an infant and other children.

Ukraine’s State Emergency Service said strikes in the Kyiv region injured two people, sparked a fire at a commercial warehouse and damaged homes and vehicles. In Kharkiv, local authorities said four people were injured when a Russian drone struck the Saltivskyi district.

Russian authorities, meanwhile, reported casualties from Ukrainian attacks. TASS said three people were killed and six injured in the Belgorod region. Casualties were also reported in Krasnodar, while five people were injured in the Rostov region.

Hundreds of drones launched overnight

Ukraine’s Air Force said Russia launched 173 attack drones from the evening of Sept. 25, with air defenses neutralizing 134. It reported strikes at 19 locations and falling debris at eight others.

Russia’s Defense Ministry, meanwhile, said its air defenses intercepted and destroyed 645 Ukrainian drones overnight, according to Russian media.

Ukraine’s military said 205 combat clashes were recorded across different sectors of the front.

Energy, communications infrastructure targeted

The attacks extended to energy and communications facilities.

Reuters reported that Russia’s Perm oil refinery was hit by a Ukrainian drone, causing a fire and damage at the facility, while Ukrinform reported an attack on the Ilsky oil refinery in the Krasnodar region.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said its forces struck a data processing center in Kyiv that it said provided communications services and supported the Starlink system.

The ministry said Russian forces also targeted logistics and port facilities in the Odesa region and a cargo vessel in the Black Sea that it said was involved in transporting military supplies to Ukrainian forces.

U.S. military aid for Ukraine

Separately, the United States plans to allocate about $93 million in additional military equipment for Ukraine before the end of the fiscal year on Sept. 30, according to Ukrinform.

The allocation would bring the amount committed by the Trump administration from a congressionally approved aid package to about $400 million. Around $307 million had already been allocated.

The equipment includes offensive weapons and spare parts for armored vehicles but does not include Patriot interceptor missiles, according to one source cited in the report.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Kyiv had reached agreements with Washington on obtaining licenses to manufacture missiles for Patriot air defense systems.

Strikes weigh on diplomatic efforts

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Moscow would take the latest attacks on Russian infrastructure into account when considering any future settlement and would continue responding to Ukrainian strikes.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha condemned the Russian attacks, saying Moscow had struck a logistics facility serving the McDonald’s restaurant chain. He called on Ukraine’s international partners to maintain economic pressure on Russia.

The latest escalation comes as Moscow and Kyiv continue long-range attacks on energy and other infrastructure while diplomatic efforts seek ways to reduce hostilities and move toward a settlement.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov previously said U.S. President Donald Trump and Putin had discussed by phone a U.S. proposal for a trilateral meeting involving Ukraine, with talks at the technical level expected first.
