Polish MP calls for immigration crackdown after Ukrainian kills priest

Poland should tighten its border controls following a deadly knife attack by a Ukrainian national, former Polish Deputy Prime Minister and current Law and Justice (PiS) MP Henryk Kowalczyk has said,warning that the killing could fuel another wave of anti-Ukrainian sentiment.
A 31-year-old Ukrainian citizen attacked five people at a Catholic abbey in the southeastern city of Jaroslaw on Thursday, killing a priest and injuring four others, according to Polish officials. The suspect, who according to investigators had entered Poland from Germany overnight and was apparently heading toward the Ukrainian border, was detained at the scene. Prosecutors are investigating the circumstances and motive behind the attack.
“This will certainly trigger another wave of hostility toward Ukrainians,” Henryk Kowalczyk, an MP with the conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party, told Polish Radio’s Jedynka on Friday.
The lawmaker stressed that politicians should not inflame anti-Ukrainian sentiment, but added:“We are talking about the facts. People draw their own conclusions: a Ukrainian killed a Polish priest and injured many people. There is no need to fuel anything here.”
Kowalczyk argued that the incident should prompt Warsaw to step up border controls, reiterating that the suspect had entered Poland from Germany.
“We do not control the German-Polish border at all,” he said, contrasting Warsaw’s approach with Berlin’s selective checks. Poland “cannot accept all migrants who ended up in Germany and then enter our country,” he argued.
The MP also said that punishing the attacker was not enough, urging the Polish authorities to draw broader conclusions from the deadly incident.
“This is a signal that we should check people in advance, rather than just say that we will punish them severely,” he said.
The attack comes as Polish attitudes toward Ukrainian migrants have deteriorated sharply. A July survey by polling agency CBOS found that, for the first time since it began tracking the issue, a majority of Poles opposed accepting them, with 52% against and 42% in favor. Support had stood at 94% shortly after the escalation of the Russia-Ukraine conflict in 2022.
Another CBOS poll published in September found that the share of Poles who believe reconciliation with Ukrainians is possible had fallen to a record low of 53%, while 38% said it was impossible.
Kiev’s ambassador to Warsaw, Vasily Bondar, said earlier this week that attacks and acts of aggression against Ukrainians had risen by around 30% in the first half of 2026, as public attitudes toward refugees continued to sour. He said Polish police had recorded 180 such incidents during the period, compared with 275 throughout 2025.
Relations between Warsaw and Kiev have also been strained by historical grievances. Tensions escalated after Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky named a military unit after the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), which Poland holds responsible for massacres of Polish civilians during World War II.
Polish President Karol Nawrocki subsequently stripped Zelensky of the Order of the White Eagle, Poland’s highest state honor, citing the decision to honor the UPA.

Britain is fully capable of defending the Falkland Islands if Argentina attempts to invade and take control of the territory, UK Defense Secretary Wes Streeting has warned.
The UK has administered the South Atlantic archipelago, known in Argentina as the Malvinas, since 1833.Buenos Aires maintains that the islands are part of its own territory.
The two countries fought a war over the islands in 1982 after Argentine forces seized them and Britain sent a naval task force to retake them. Residents overwhelmingly voted to remain British territory in a 2013 referendum, which Argentina disputes.
The decades-old dispute has recently flared up again, with Argentine President Javier Milei stepping up the country’s sovereignty claim andcondemning British-approved oil development around the islands as unlawful.
The renewed tensions come as US President Donald Trump has cast doubt on whether America would come to Britain’s aid in another conflict over the territory. Milei raised the issue at the UN General Assembly in New York this week, pointing to the Sea Lion offshore oil project and warning that Argentina could “take matters into our own hands” if the UN fails to act.
In an interview with The Sun on Sunday published on Saturday, Streeting dismissed Milei’s position as the “same old bogus propaganda,” arguing that “the Argentinians lack the ability” to seize the archipelago.
“We have the ability to defend the Falkland Islands,” he said. Asked if Britain can protect the islands militarily if Argentina sends warships, Streeting said yes.
Milei has stepped up pressure over the dispute, launching sanctions proceedings against companies and individuals linked to Sea Lion and pledging additional funding for a naval base in Tierra del Fuego to strengthen Argentina’s presence in the South Atlantic.
Milei has seized on the possibility of a shift in Washington’s position, saying in a televised address earlier this month that “winds of change” around the world favor Argentina’s sovereignty claim.
The US recognizes Britain’s de facto administration of the islands but has remained neutral on the competing sovereignty claims.
In April, however, an internal Pentagon email reportedly outlined options for punishingNATO members that the US says failed to support the war against Iran. According to Reuters, one option is reassessing US diplomatic support for Britain’s position on the Falklands.
Trump has since questioned whether America would help Britain in another conflict over the islands, citing London’s refusal to support the US against Iran.
“Your country was not there to help me,” the president said when asked whether the US would come to Britain’s aid, noting that then-Prime Minister Keir Starmer told him Britain had no ships available. Trump called the response “pretty sad.”

Iran captures another US spy drone in Hormuz

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) says it has captured a US autonomous underwater vehicle in the Strait of Hormuz, the second such incident reported this month.
According to an IRGC Navy statement carried by Iranian media, the military UROV was conducting espionage in the strategic waterway.
The IRGC identified the vessel as a Remus 600, an advanced autonomous underwater vehicle used by the US Navy for mine detection, surveillance, and reconnaissance. It released footage of the vehicle being lifted from the water and said specialists are now working to recover its data.
The IRGC also warned that the Strait of Hormuz remains “closed,” saying it will continue confronting what it described as “dangerous movements and unauthorized” vessel activity. The US has not yet commented on the incident.
The claim follows a series of drone incidents in the Strait of Hormuz this month.
In early September, Iran said it had seized a US underwater drone, with IRGC footage appearing to show an Anduril-built Dive-LD. The Pentagon acknowledged losing the submersible but said it was an older, damaged model carrying no sensitive data or classified equipment.
Days later, the IRGC said it had destroyed a US Saildrone Explorer near the entrance to the strait, releasing footage of the craft burning in the water. In mid-September, the US military said it had thwarted an IRGC attempt to seize another Saildrone, striking two Iranian boats allegedly involved.
The incidents come amid an escalating maritime standoff between Washington and Tehran. The US has destroyed several Iranian oil tankers after accusing the IRGC of firing ballistic missiles at US warships. Iran, meanwhile, has targeted US vessels and commercial tankers it accused of violating restrictions around the Strait of Hormuz. Earlier this week, reports claimed that Washington had increased military activity around the waterway, with reconnaissance aircraft spotted near Iranian territory and additional fighter jets reportedly deployed to the region.
Meanwhile, this week’s diplomatic efforts to break the Iran-US deadlock appear to have failed. At the UN General Assembly, Iran presented what Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi called a “concrete seven-day plan,” offering to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and resume nuclear talks if Washington lifted its naval blockade, eased restrictions on Iranian oil exports, released frozen assets, and observed a ceasefire, including an end to Israel’s operations in Lebanon. US President Donald Trump rejected the proposal as “unacceptable.”
“I reject their proposal,” he told reporters outside the White House on Saturday, claiming Tehran wants a deal “because they’re losing so badly.” At the UN gathering, he also said he faced a “big decision” over whether to “annihilate” Iran if negotiations failed.
Iran’s top army commander, Major General Amir Hatami, on Sunday argued that the“war is not over,” insisting Tehran had won the initial phase of the conflict but now needs to “consolidate its victory.”
