Bill Gates is back on the Sunday-show circuit spreading doom and predicting a massive reduction in the human population.
In an exclusive Meet the Press interview set to air this weekend, the Microsoft co-founder told Kristen Welker that artificial intelligence is "certainly powerful enough to drive events that… cause a billion deaths" - then used the line to demand federal legislation, law-enforcement monitoring, and an end to industry self-regulation.
Gates is touting AI as a species-level emergency, and calling for handing over total control to politicians and a new class of global inspectors.
Welker put the extinction question to him directly: "Do you believe AI is powerful enough to end all of humanity?"
Gates answered: "AI is certainly powerful enough to drive events that, you know, cause a billion deaths, you know, so even though it's pretty hard to get to 100%, there's never been a weapon as powerful as the combination of people with ill intent using the latest AI tools."
"Pretty hard to get to 100 percent." He almost seems disappointed by that.
Gates did not describe a rogue machine deciding to wipe out the species. He framed the threat as people using the newest models as a weapon - then immediately converted that warning into a Washington to-do list.
Asked whether self-regulation was enough, or whether it had to come with legislation, Gates said: "No one thinks self-regulation is enough, so there needs to be legislation passed in Washington. Absolutely. You need law enforcement and the politicians to get into the discussion about what safeguards and monitoring look like and that has to be a required thing and it will be a little bit of overhead for the industry but not a dramatic slowing of what they're doing."
Three days earlier, Gates was on CBS Mornings laying the metaphysical groundwork. Comparisons to past technologies, he said, miss the point. "Most of society is still not aware of how quickly it's moving," he told Gayle King and Norah O'Donnell. "AI is almost an evolutionary event."

Homan Says 157,000 Missing Unaccompanied Immigrant Children Located
Around 157,000 children who crossed the border as unaccompanied minors have been found since the start of the Trump administration while many are still missing, White House border czar Tom Homan told The Epoch Times.
In an interview with senior editor Jan Jekielek for "American Thought Leaders," airing on Sept. 26, he said that just under half a million children were "smuggled" into the United States during the Biden administration.
Homan said officials at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) at the time were proud of the fact that children weren't in detention for long.
"They weren't [held] very long, but the problem is they released them quickly because the sponsors weren't properly vetted," he said, and with caretakers not responding to communications or check-ins, that caused the government to lose track of nearly 300,000 of the children.
Homan said that when President Donald Trump asked him to return to the federal government under his second administration, one of the top directives he was given was to address the problem of missing children.
"He asked me to do three things: secure the border, run deportation operations, and find these kids."
The border czar said he was much more optimistic about the first two directives than he was about finding the children, because his team would have to count on the digital footprint of the sponsors, based on information provided by the sponsors.
"We can find you, we can find me. We own homes, we own cars, we have credit cards. We can find us because we all have a digital footprint. Children don't," Homan said.
Some Democrats on Capitol Hill have objected to the treatment of unaccompanied minors after they've been located.
Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) condemned the current administration in June for plans to deport some of the children back to Mexico.
"You have been entrusted with the care and safety of the children placed within the [Office of Refugee Resettlement] network," Wyden said in a letter to the HHS. "Proceeding with this plan knowingly endangers their lives and violates your duty to these vulnerable children."
When officials began searching for the children, they learned that many of the sponsors had given the wrong information, such as home addresses that turned out to be supermarkets, parking lots, or churches. False names had been used for identification, and locating where the children actually were proved to be a massive undertaking.
Homan told The Epoch Times that of the roughly 157,000 children who have been found, more than 20 have died - some due to natural causes, and others from a drug overdose or as a result of violence.
The work isn't done, however, and he said he intends to find every one of the 140,000 still missing children, even those who have aged out of the system.

The brainwash is intensifying. My son’s class recently went on a school trip to London. Subtle psychological war indoctrination was slipped in.
It all feels as though the decision that Europe will be going to war against Russia has already been made. As Mr. Pompous, Jacob Rees-Mogg put it:
“… If we face a war, we will need people who will join the armed services and who will go out and do their duty. We may even face circumstances where people have to die to save their country…”
One of the most enthusiastic war promoters, former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson recently had this to say:
“There’s no reason, that I can see, why we shouldn’t send some peaceful ground forces to show our support, our constitutional support for free, independent Ukraine.”
Johnson’s wording itself is interesting: “peaceful ground forces,” and “constitutional support,” and it’s obvious from the video (linked above) that he was struggling to spit all those words out exactly right so that his plea for a peaceful war could sound perfectly honorable and dignified. He seemed especially scrupulous to put the words constitutional and support together.
All the while, the British media are doing their part, dutifully informing their fellow citizens that the Russians are coming:
The children’s mission was to “Take photos of exhibits that connect to Private Peaceful,” and, “When you return to school, create a PPTX presentation.” The assignment also came with a warning: “If you do anything inappropriate, you will be punished accordingly,” a truly bizarre thing to toss into a school trip. The following tasks, listed in the leaflet, were part of their assignment:
Military discipline/execution (“Anything about court martial, desertion, or punishment. .. Would Charlie’s execution be considered fair based on what you’ve learnt?”)
Letter or personal object (“What does this show about soldiers’ feelings? How can you relate it to Private Peaceful?”)
Uniform/equipment (“How practical or comfortable does this look? … How did Tommo feel about his uniform / kit?”)
Gas warfare (“How does this change your understanding of Tommo’s fear and panic during gas attack?”)
Enlistment (“Tommo was able to enlist even though he was too young. Would you have been successful? Why or why not?”)
Battle/weapons (“How does this change your view of war? Does this make what the Peaceful brothers went through more heroic or more frightening? Why?)
The trenches (“Walk through the trench reconstruction and note your impressions…”)
There’s something profoundly sinister about asking 14-year olds if the execution of a comrade was “fair,” to imagine themselves in trenches and asking whether they think they could be “successful” at enlisting even if they are too young. Calling troops “the Peaceful brothers” seems like one of those Orwellian, war is peace and slavery is freedom, but this all was part of the kids’ school trip program in London.

How Lockheed Martin, Raytheon & BAE Systems are propagandizing children to support war through STEM
Raytheon sponsors the Girl Scouts of America. BAE Systems is reading your toddlers their favorite fairytale stories. And Lockheed Martin funds children’s math and STEM festivals. This is done with great fanfare, supposedly to empower and inspire children to pursue their passion for science. In reality, though, these companies are attempting to launder their images and enlist the next generation to become cogs in the military-industrial complex.
All the while, these organizations’ products are being used across the world by the United States and Israel to commit war crimes – in Iran, Yemen, Palestine, and beyond – to target children.

Normalizing War to Kids
When many Americans think of Raytheon (now officially rebranded as RTX Corporation), they don’t envisage rockets and cruise missiles; they think of math. For decades, the second-largest arms manufacturer on the planet has bankrolled a wide range of organizations aimed at getting children excited about STEM subjects.
Since 2009, Raytheon has been the title sponsor of MATHCOUNTS, a non-profit organization that provides engaging math programs for middle school students in every U.S. state, as well as organizing math competitions to find the brightest children in America.
In 2005, Raytheon launched its MathMovesU program, aimed, in its own words, “to inspire middle school students to get excited about math and science.” In addition to the materials provided, it has also spent millions on scholarships, grants, and study awards to thousands of students, teachers, and volunteers.
And its MathAlive! traveling exhibit promises, in rather outdated branding, to take math “2theXtreme”. MathAlive! Has also traveled to several countries in West Asia, including Qatar, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia – all of them among the biggest purchasers of Raytheon weapons technology.
The company also enjoys a longtime partnership with the Girl Scouts of the United States of America (GSUSA). In 2017, for example, it launched the GSUSA’s first national computer science program and cyber challenge for middle and high school girls.
“The progress to diversify the STEM workforce needs to be accelerated… At a time when technology is transforming the way we live and work, we can – and should – show young women a clear path to taking an active role in this transformation,” said Thomas A. Kennedy, then-Raytheon CEO; “Working together, Raytheon and Girl Scouts will help girls build confidence to see themselves as the robotics engineers, data scientists and cybersecurity professionals who will create a better tomorrow.”
Raytheon also spearheaded the GSUSA’s “Think Like a Programmer” project, which encourages girls to explore the world of artificial intelligence and cybersecurity, and developed many of the programming badges available to the scouts.
GSUSA appears proud of this relationship. Its website profiles one former scout who now works at Raytheon as a success story and a model to follow. The article includes a step-by-step guide and a list of tips for those wishing to follow in her footsteps.
Unsurprisingly, Raytheon also works closely with the U.S. military on these matters, establishing four new STEM “centers of innovation” with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America in Michigan, Oklahoma, Colorado, and Washington, D.C., all near military bases.
While some might be surprised by the closeness of the relationship between a children’s organization and an arms manufacturer, it is worth remembering that the scouting movement was originally established by Lieutenant-General Robert Baden-Powell, as a stepping stone towards boys joining the military. Baden-Powell was deeply concerned that English boys would not be physically fit enough to fight for their country in any upcoming wars, and designed an organization that would train them both physically and mentally to do so.
Kirsten Bayes from the Campaign Against the Arms Trade was unimpressed by Raytheon’s attempts to improve their image and to train the next generation of weapons manufacturers. “Our view is that arms companies have no place in schools or colleges, and should certainly not be working with children’s educational charities,” she told MintPress, adding:
“Schools and other places of education should be places where children learn, grow and develop their full potential. They should not be a recruiting ground where arms companies whitewash their activities.”

Trillions in compute commitments come due in 2027–2028. The underlying mechanics reveals how the AI boom breaks, and when.
Nothing looked wrong in the summer of 2006. Home prices had risen for the better part of a decade. Delinquencies were near historic lows. Credit spreads were tight, the ratings held, and the securitization machine hummed. If you had asked a hundred people on a trading desk whether the American mortgage market was months from seizing, most would have laughed.
Millions of subprime borrowers were, at that moment, paying the low introductory rate on a two-year adjustable rate mortgage – the 2/28 ARM. A low fixed-rate for two years, then the rate reset to a payment 30% to 50% higher. During those first two years the loan performed beautifully: the borrower paid, the servicer collected, and the bond paid its coupon. Nothing looked wrong because the whole complex – housing, mortgages, securitization – was sitting inside the teaser period.
Every ARM reset was known, dated, and contractually inevitable from the moment of origination. Aggregate those reset schedules and you get the most damning exhibit of the era: the reset wall. Roughly a trillion dollars of adjustable-rate mortgages were contractually set to reset across 2007 and 2008 – thirty to forty billion dollars a month at the peak. Credit Suisse published the chart in March 2007. The IMF reprinted it. It circulated on every trading floor in New York and London.

Few understood it. Paulson & Co. laid out the arithmetic that same month in a comment letter to the FDIC: Over 80% of recent subprime originations, it observed, were two- or three-year adjustable-rate products. The average subprime borrower’s mortgage payments already consumed roughly 40% of their gross income at the teaser rate. Almost none of them could service the reset rate out of income.
The crisis, in other words, was written in advance by the instruments themselves. The market looked at the reset wall and kept buying, because every participant believed the exit would arrive before the reset: home prices would keep appreciating and the borrower would refinance into a fresh teaser before the old one expired.
We have spent the last eighteen years describing the financial crisis as a shock – a black swan, a hundred-year flood, a tail event. It was none of those things. Every reset on that chart was contractually inevitable from the moment of origination. The defaults were not primarily caused by an exogenous macro shock, a spike in unemployment, or a recession that arrived first. They were the scheduled mathematical consequence of loans that assumed perpetual appreciation. The mortgages were built to break.
The AI boom has rebuilt this exact structure, and the market is once again underwriting the teaser.
It has a reset wall of its own – a schedule of dated, contractual, non-negotiable payment shocks – hiding inside the trillions of dollars of compute contracts signed by OpenAI and other frontier labs since 2024.
The take-or-pay compute contract – the instrument at the center of the AI build-out – has a structural feature that almost no one prices: its payments do not begin at signing. They begin at delivery. A lab signs a multi-year capacity commitment today, but the payments do not start until the data center is energized, the capacity is accepted, and the contractual ramp schedule commences – an interval set not by finance, but by construction: siting, powering, and filling a gigawatt-scale campus takes 24-to-36 months from signature – mirroring the two-to-three-year teaser of a subprime ARM.
More than $2.3 trillion of compute contracts now sit on the books of the four largest American cloud providers as remaining performance obligations and contracted backlog – signed, celebrated, capitalized into equity prices, and, critically, not yet billing.
During the teaser period, everyone wins. The seller reports backlog growth that compounds at rates no operating business has ever sustained – Oracle’s RPO grew 363% in a single fiscal year. The buyer – a frontier lab burning cash at historic rates – books no expense because the capacity does not yet exist. The market capitalizes the booked number as if it were revenue and ignores the billed number as if it were a technicality. And then, on a schedule fixed at signing, booked compute becomes billed compute. The take-or-pay clock starts. From that day forward, the frontier labs and the hyperscalers incur those costs regardless of utilization. The invoice is a function of the contract, not of demand. That is the reset.
