Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has instructed an inter-ministerial team and the director of the International Law Department to begin preparing a legal case against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Israeli i24 reported, focusing on his government's alleged treatment of Kurdish minorities and its financial support for Hamas, legal analyst Avishai Grinzaig reported Sunday evening.
According to the report, the directive is aimed at building a case that could potentially be brought before the International Criminal Court in The Hague.
The move follows an escalation roughly a month earlier, when Erdogan announced he had approached Interpol to advance efforts toward the arrest of Netanyahu.
That announcement was described as one in a continuing series of escalatory steps between the two governments, which prompted Israeli officials to pursue a retaliatory legal measure against the Turkish president.
Case to center on Kurdish policy and Hamas funding
The case being prepared will focus heavily on Erdogan's alleged actions against Kurdish minorities within Türkiye, while also addressing his government's alleged financial ties to and funding of Hamas, the report said.
Neither Israel nor Türkiye has signed the Rome Statute, the treaty that established the International Criminal Court, meaning both countries fall outside the court's direct jurisdiction.
Israel could theoretically bring the case to the ICC on its own, but the more likely scenario, according to the report, is that it would do so through a proxy party. Officials do not necessarily intend for the case to be filed at all.
