The SR-72 Was Just "Announced"
For years the SR-72 has existed somewhere between a real aerospace program and military aviation fan fiction. Lockheed Martin has talked about a Mach 6 successor to the SR-71, NASA and DARPA have spent decades testing the engines, materials, and hypersonic flight technology needed to make something like it work, and now NASA may have just teased that something much more real is happening. So in this video we’re looking at what the SR-72 is actually supposed to be, what evidence we have that it either exists or is getting closer to reality, and how all of the X-planes, scramjets, and experimental programs connect back to the idea.
But the bigger question is why anyone would even want a Cold War-style spy plane in 2026 when satellites and drones are everywhere. The answer has a lot to do with how predictable satellites are, how vulnerable space assets could become in a major war, and why speed itself can be a form of survivability. If the SR-72 ever does become real, it would probably be doing a lot more than taking really fast pictures.
