Governor replaces DA with New York AG Letitia James as special prosecutor in Cornell University sexual assault case

Jane Doe, who has said she was raped and plied with drugs at a Cornell fraternity house in 2024, “deserves to know that every fact will be examined and justice pursued,” Gov. Kathy Hochul said.

New York Attorney General Letitia James has been appointed as special prosecutor in the Cornell University sexual assault investigation, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Thursday, following increasing scrutiny and uproar over how university police and the local district attorney’s office handled the matter two years ago.

Hochul said in a statement that “newly released information continues to raise serious questions about the investigation,” which has in turn “undercut my faith, and the public’s faith.”

She said James, who has been attorney general since 2019, will take over the case of a former Cornell University student who alleged in a lawsuit last month that she was raped, sexually assaulted and plied with drugs by members of Chi Phi fraternity in 2024.

The student made a report to Cornell police about three weeks after the incident she alleges, and the matter was investigated by the Tompkins County district attorney, who said he found “insufficient evidence to support criminal charges” at the time. This week, District Attorney Matthew Van Houten said his office will look at the case again, but he defended its initial decision, saying the woman’s statement to police in 2024 “described her participation in drug use and sexual conduct as voluntary, conscious, and consensual.”

The woman, identified only as Jane Doe, sued the university, seven Chi Phi fraternity brothers and other defendants on Sept. 16. None of the seven was criminally charged.

The Chi Phi national fraternity said in a statement Sept. 18 that it could not discuss specific allegations during pending litigation. It called the allegations “deeply concerning,” and its local chapter has been barred from campus.

“As special prosecutor, the Attorney General will investigate this incident and, if warranted, prosecute any offenses arising from that investigation and present evidence to a grand jury,” Hochul said.

She said Jane Doe “deserves to know that every fact will be examined and justice pursued.”

“This action will ensure that the matter is fully and thoroughly investigated without conflict or bias, and handled independently with the rigor that this matter demands,” she said.

Doe’s attorney, Thomas Guiffra, praised James’ appointment Thursday, saying he and Doe “had no faith in DA Van Houten’s ability or desire to actively investigate and prosecute this case.”

“We were dismayed that shortly after we agreed to give him all the assistance he needed, he published an announcement which questioned whether a crime was committed,” Guiffra said. “The most recent disclosure when he claimed that he never reviewed the transcript where Ms. Doe said “I am 100% certain I was raped” was the last straw.”

Guiffra’s remark was an apparent reference to the transcript of Doe’s interview with campus police in 2024, which was reported by CBS News earlier this week. Van Houten told NBC News on Wednesday that that specific allegation was not in the written statement his office received from Cornell police at the time. NBC News has not reviewed that transcript.

Guiffra said he intended to write a letter to Hochul requesting she appoint a special prosecutor, and said he and Doe “look forward to working with Attorney General James to finally obtain justice.”

James said in a statement Thursday evening: “Every New Yorker deserves to know that when they report a crime, it will be investigated fully and fairly. The Governor has entrusted my office with this investigation, and we do not take that responsibility lightly.”

“I stand ready to lead a process New Yorkers can trust, guided by the facts and the law,” she added.

The university confirmed Wednesday that it agreed to Hochul’s call for an independent investigation, and it backed James’ appointment Thursday night.

“Cornell supports Governor Hochul’s decision to assign this case to the New York Attorney General’s Office,” the university said in a statement.

Van Houten did not immediately respond Thursday night to emailed requests for comment.

The only way Trump can lose now is a civil war but Trump visiting Mamdani seems to have been a more important meeting than we thought. Every country has their HQ in America, everything else is just a proxy if that makes sense.

Rubio waives human rights restrictions to release $320 million in military aid to Egypt

Secretary of State Marco Rubio has waived a restriction on $320 million in military aid to Egypt that had been previously withheld over human rights concerns.

WASHINGTON – Secretary of State Marco Rubio has waived a restriction on $320 million in military aid to Egypt that had been previously withheld over human rights concerns, citing Egypt’s help in dealing with Iran since the conflict began earlier this year.

The State Department said Thursday that Rubio had signed off on the waiver “in the interest of U.S. national security.”

"The Secretary’s determination reflects the importance of Egypt to U.S. national security interests, and the concrete security cooperation Egypt provides to the United States,” the department said.

In a letter sent to lawmakers whose contents were shared with The Associated Press, Rubio cited, in particular, Egypt’s “helpful role” in the war with Iran. Egypt has been a key mediator between the U.S. and Iran in the efforts to wind down the more than seven-month-long conflict.

The State Department maintained that the Trump administration would continue to raise human rights matters as part of its dialogue with Egypt “on the full range of issues in our bilateral relationship.”

“The waiver determination recognizes the importance of maintaining security cooperation with Egypt at a time of significant regional security challenges,” the department said.

The $320 million is part of an annual U.S. contribution of $1.3 billion in economic and military assistance to Egypt. Specifically, it is for foreign military financing, which provides money for recipient nations to purchase U.S.-produced weaponry.

Congress inserted the requirement over concerns about Egypt’s human rights record, which many experts regard as problematic. The State Department itself in recent years has pointed to credible reports of torture, arbitrary arrest, child labor and restrictions on expression.

But granting a waiver to Egypt has become routine for both Republican and Democratic administrations.

The Biden administration, for example, last issued a waiver in September 2024, citing Egypt’s assistance in U.S. efforts to bring an end to the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza.

Musk returns to US government for Pentagon war study

Tech billionaire Elon Musk will make a return to officially advising US President Donald Trump's government by co-leading what the Pentagon called a study on the future of war.

Musk served as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), where he spearheaded sweeping job cuts across the US federal government, before departing in May 2025.

In a speech Wednesday at the Quantico military base, Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth said "Project Meridian" will be "an effort led by America's best minds to study the future of warfare."

"We are leveraging a unique source of American advantage, one our adversaries do not have: our innovators, our senior leaders and our technologists," Hegseth said.

Musk will be a co-leader of Project Meridian alongside Palmer Luckey, the 34-year-old co-founder of defense technology company Anduril Industries, and Newt Gingrich, the 83-year-old Republican former House speaker.

Musk's companies are already major Pentagon contractors, including SpaceX building satellite networks for Trump's planned "Golden Dome" missile defense shield.

His artificial intelligence firm xAI this year signed a deal allowing the military to use its Grok chatbot on classified systems.

In 2024, Musk threw his support behind Trump and helped his return to the White House, but the men later had a high-profile blow-up over the president's spending legislation.

The two have since reconciled, and Musk has again become a frequent presence at the White House, though less visibly than during his previous stint, when he often visited the Oval Office, most memorably with his young son on his shoulders.

On Tuesday he was seated next to Trump at a lunch with artificial intelligence executives, where he joined other tech leaders in signing a voluntary AI safety accord that the president described as "morally binding."

Last week, Musk attended the state dinner Trump hosted for Chinese President Xi Jinping, and in May he flew to Beijing on Air Force One as part of the business delegation accompanying Trump on his state visit to China.

He also resumed giving to Republican causes, including multimillion-dollar donations to individual candidates and conservative political groups.

Musk, who spent more than $250 million backing Trump and other Republicans in the 2024 election, has given at least $90 million toward November's midterm elections, according to tallies of Federal Election Commission filings.

Hegseth said the project's purpose is to "creatively look to the future and identify the domains that we must conquer and capabilities we must master."

Project members will include hand-picked private sector leaders and subject matter experts from across the innovation, academic and policy ecosystems.

Hegseth said he has directed Project Meridian's findings to be completed and submitted within 120 days.

US deploys thousands more troops, Marines to Middle East as oil prices surge

Washington is sending the USS Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group and the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit to the Middle East, adding roughly 10,000 sailors and Marines to the region by the end of November. The deployment comes as oil prices surged more than $4 a barrel amid concerns about regional stability and global energy supplies.

President Donald Trump said Thursday that the U.S. is “trying to be nice” to Iran’s current leader as it seeks someone to negotiate with, saying most of the country’s leadership is gone.

Trump made the remarks while discussing the war with Iran during an appearance at a Peterbilt factory in Denton, Texas.

“For the most part, their leaders are gone,” Trump said.

“That was one of our problems. We don't know who the hell to deal with, to be honest," he added.

“We're trying to be nice to the current person, but we've got to deal with somebody at some point. So we're doing very well.”

Trump also expressed confidence in the war's outcome, predicting a quick resolution.

“We'll win very easily,” he added, stating he believes victory will come “right after the election—but maybe before the election.”

“Their currency is valueless. They have no money. They have no Navy—all 159 ships are lying beautifully at the bottom of the sea.” he said.

“They have some missiles, but we can handle it. Very few are left, and their manufacturing capacity is dead,” Trump added
