Adopted Missouri man discovers Michael McDonald of Doobie Brothers, yacht rock fame is his biological father

Story by Ella Morrison

An adopted Missouri man got the shock of a lifetime when he discovered his biological father was five-time Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Michael McDonald of The Doobie Brothers.

Michael Goessling was put up for adoption as an infant after his biological parents got pregnant when they were both 14 years old, First Alert 4 reported.

Goessling said he “had a wonderful childhood” raised in St. Louis by his adoptive parents, Paul and Kay Goessling — but always remained curious about his biological roots.

“I could not pick two finer folks to raise me,” he said, adding that he “Always knew I was adopted.”

Goessling’s curiosity peaked when he learned he had a half-brother he never knew existedafter they both submitted their DNA to 23andMe and were notified of their match.

“Within 36 hours, [my half-brother] got an email notifying him: Michael Goessling, half-brother, St. Louis,” Goessling said. “And that’s how this all began.”

Goessling met with his birth mother in person on his 58th birthday and later connected with his biological father on the phone, who modestly mentioned he was a musician preparing for a tour through St. Louis.

“I said, ‘Are you Michael McDonald?’” Goessling said.

“And he said, ‘Yeah, I’m afraid so.’”

McDonald, who has remained close friendswith Goessling’s birth mother over the years, said he “always carried that guilt with me” of not knowing what happened to his sonafter the young teens gave him up for adoption decades earlier.

“We always talked about him. And it always came down to our greatest fear was, how did life treat him?” McDonald, 74, told the outlet.

“But just to know that he was okay and that he had a good life, and a life certainly that I wouldn’t have been able to afford him at that time, was a great reward,” the “What a Fool Believes” singer said.

“The real rock stars in this story are his adoptive parents.”

It is purely a coincidence that Goessling and McDonald share the same name, Michael. KMOV

It is purely coincidental that the biological father and son — who later met in person — share the same first name.

“When he first saw me, he put his arms out, gave me a big old bear hug and told me he loved me, and I told him the same,” Goessling said.

The yacht rock vocalist, who has been married to singer Amy Holland since 1983 and shares two adult children with, said he is “still wrapping my head” around the fact he’s a grandfather — since Goessling is a dad of two.

“My daughter-in-law is just the daughter-in-law you’d hope for,” the singer added of Goessling’s wife.

“And the kids are two of the greatest kids you’d ever meet. I’m just so proud of them.”

Elon Musk's heartbroken baby mama Shivon Zilis reveals billionaire has ended their relationship with no warning…'I've loved him more than life itself'

By DANA KENNEDY, SENIOR INVESTIGATIVE REPORTER and EMILY CRANE PUBLISHED: 12:02 EDT, 2 October 2026

Elon Musk's longtime love and baby mama Shivon Zilis has revealed the billionaire abruptly ended their relationship 'with no warning' - with the mom-of-four declaring 'it’s hard to go from in love to let go in a week.'

'Hurting' Zilis, an executive at Musk’s brain implant startup Neuralink, poured her heart out in a lengthy X post on Friday - just hours after eagle-eyed social media users noticed the billionaire had stopped following her on the platform he owns.

'I’ve loved him more than life itself and he’s taught me 100 lifetimes of knowledge and made my cup overflow with life meaning, so there is a lot of loss, but luckily we created four beautiful little loves of my life,' Zilis, 40, wrote on X.

'I am so beyond grateful for our children and they make every single day the best day of my life! I do hope and pray he and I can be great friends and coparents.'

Zilis, who is believed to have first embarked on a secret tryst with the Space X founder back in 2016, went on todescribe Musk as a 'tortured soul.'

'I feel happy that I got to show Elon how it feels to be deeply understood, nurtured, and peacefully loved with stability and gentleness,' she wrote.

'I loved being that counterbalancing place of safety, sense of calm, and love - and delighted in bringing a smile back to his face when he was down. I will miss him dearly.'

Zilis - the mother of four of Musk's 14 kids - hinted, too, that she was blindsided by the breakup - sharing a screenshot of loved-up text messages the pair had exchanged just last week.

Elon Musk's longtime love and baby mama Shivon Zilis revealed on Friday the billionaire abruptly ended their relationship 'with no warning.'

'It was really wonderful to see you for breakfast. Love you very much,' Zilis texted Musk. 'Love you too. I didn't realize that this Xi dinner included significant other (Beijing one did not) or I would have invited you,' he responded on September 24, referencing the White House state dinner for the Chinese president. Zilis replied: 'Aw, that means so much to me. Thank you.'

Musk, 55, hasn't yet commented on the breakup.

Zilis ended her post by saying: 'I’m hurting, but care deeply about E and will always be cheering for his happiness. God speed, Elon, the world is lucky to have you.'

The first apparent sign of trouble in the couple's romance came back on September 28 when Zilis had posted a cryptic message on social media: 'New day, new life.' Then, earlier on Friday, Big Tech Alert, an account that tracks the online activity of technology figures, flagged that Musk had unfollowed her.

The Tesla founder only follows around 1,400 accounts.

News of the shock split comes just months after Zilis - who is one of four women Musk has children with - took the stand as a key witness in the Space X founder’s case against OpenAI earlier this year.

It was during her testimony that key details about their once-secret romance were laid bare. Zilis, who was born in Ontario, Canada and studied at Yale University, had first met Musk through OpenAI - the artificial intelligence lab he co-founded in 2015. She testified that their relationship began as 'a one-off' at a corporate off-site event - but later turned romantic around 2016. Zilis told the jury that when she decided to have children as a single mom, Musk 'offered to make a donation' as a platonic sperm donor towards the end of 2020.

Their twins, Strider and Azure, were born by IVF in November 2021. News of their third child, Arcadia, surfaced in June 2024. And their son, Seldon Lycurgus, followed in February 2025.

Zilis testified that she lives in a house in Austin, Texas where Musk often stays when he visits their children. Musk, for his part, called Zilis his 'partner' when it was his turn to testify. The couple were spotted holding hands as they arrived at the wedding of White House deputy chief of staff Dan Scavino at President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate back in February.

Prior to becoming director of operations and special projects at Neuralink, Zilis had previously worked as a project director on Tesla's Autopilot team from 2017 to 2019.In the wake of their split, it wasn't immediately clear whether Zilis would keep her roles at Neuralink and Musk's other companies.

The Daily Mail has reached out to Zilis and Musk.

JD Vance opens up on 2028 plans and knifes 'obvious' rival Ted Cruz who he says is clearly running

By JON MICHAEL RAASCH, WHITE HOUSE CORRESPONDENT

PUBLISHED: 14:02 EDT, 2 October 2026

Vice President JD Vance was quick to dodge questions about his political future while eagerly dishing out an obvious jab at one of his potential 2028 GOP rivals.

Reporters asked Vance, the 42-year-old father of four, Thursday about the upcoming midterms and whether the GOP's election result will shape his decision to launch a presidential bid.

'Regardless of what happens over the next 35 days, there will be new information, new things you have to make a decision over,' Vance responded.

Vance, who has not announced an official bid, has remained opaque about his intentions, instead shrugging off the query with: 'The American people make that decision.'

The VP then pivoted to bash his former Senate colleague Ted Cruz of Texas. 'It is really obvious to me that, at this very moment, Ted Cruz is running for president,' Vance told NBC News.

'At this moment, I’m not. I’m trying to help elect Republicans. That’s what I’m going to keep on doing.'

Cruz said in August that he has not coalesced around Vance as the 2028 GOP candidate and that the conversation is still open.

'Oh, no. There’s going to be a full discussion about who we are and what we believe,' Cruz said. 'I’ll certainly be part of the discussion. (Cruz's arrogance is what has already hurt him, it's too much.)

The Texan accused Vance of being an acolyte of Tucker Carlson, the podcaster and former Fox News host, according to Axios.

Cruz and Carlson have clashed and traded insults, particularly over the Texan's strong support of Israel. (Bibi and Israel is his secret weapon, seems dangerous)

Vance and Cruz were Senate colleagues long before Vance's nomination to become Trump's running mate.

Cruz was Trump's most formidable GOP challenger in the 2016 campaign, and he was the last to drop out after Trump received 45 percent of the Republican backing while the Texan received just 25 percent.

While Cruz is not on the ballot this year – his term runs through 2030 – he has been campaigning in swing states, including Iowa and South Carolina, both early presidential primary states, to fundraise for the GOP ahead of this year's elections.

The Texas senator's presidential ambitions are seen as a long shot.

Vance currently has a 45 percent chance of becoming the GOP's 2028 presidential nominee, according to the prediction market Kalshi.

Cruz, meanwhile, has just a two percent chance.

FBI Gives Employees a Classified ‘Patel Report’ about Times When it ‘Fell Short’

It was unclear what episodes from the FBI's past are chronicled in the new “Patel Report.” Posted by Headline USA Editor October 2, 2026

(Headline USA) The FBI has released a classified report to its workforce examining what it says are chapters from the bureau’s history “where this institution fell short,” according to an internal message obtained Friday by The Associated Press.

It was unclear what episodes from the FBI’s past are chronicled in the new “Patel Report.” But the document’s existence is in keeping with Director Kash Patel’s frequent criticism of the leaders who preceded him as well as with his determination to rid the FBI of agents and other employees he contends have politicized the bureau in the past. Patel’s critics, however, accuse him of politicizing the FBI.

Though Patel pledged at his confirmation hearing last year that he would not look “backward,” he has encouraged investigation of former senior officials and has presided over waves of terminations, including of employees who participated in years-old investigations of President Donald Trump, were photographed taking a knee during a 2020 racial justice protest and contributed to a disputed analytical memo about Catholic extremism.

“The Patel Report looks backward because accountability demands it,” says a memo to the workforce signed by the FBI’s co-deputy directors, Christopher Raia and Andrew Bailey, that describes the document as marking the “closing of one chapter in our history and the beginning of another complete with a brighter future ahead.”

Bailey announced his resignation earlier this week, and his last day is Friday. The FBI declined to comment on the report.

The message also says: “We cannot change what happened before we arrived. But we can confront it honestly. We can recognize failures instead of protecting them. We can hold people accountable. We can fix what was broken. And we can build safeguards strong enough to ensure the mistakes of the past are never allowed to define this institution again. These steps are consistent with any institution of excellence that is constantly striving for improvement.

It was unclear if the report made recommendations or demanded any action to address past shortcomings. The FBI message says the report is meant to “promote fierce organizational accountability” and rebuild “public trust.”

But Patel’s critics say the politically charged investigations into perceived adversaries of Trump that the FBI has started under his watch, as well as the punishment of agents who participated in investigations into the Republican president to which they were assigned, have eroded faith in the nation’s premier federal law enforcement agency.
