The 1943 experimental short film Meshes of the Afternoon by Maya Deren and Alexander Hammid was filmed almost entirely in and around their own bungalow in the Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles.

Primary Film Location

• Address: 1466 North Kings Road, West Hollywood, California (near Sunset Boulevard)

• Details: The tiny 1923-built bungalow and its surrounding outdoor pathway, driveway, and interior rooms served as the surreal, repeating dreamscape for the film.

• Area Context: The property is situated just above Sunset Boulevard, near historic Los Angeles landmarks like the

Chateau Marmont

and the former Garden of Allah.

If you'd like, I can share more about:

• The budget and production history of the film

• The symbolism behind key motifs like the knife and mirror face

• Other short films directed by Maya Deren

Orpheus VHS (1983) (USA)

Jean Cocteau strongly influenced early LGBTQIA+ poets—from Allan Ginsberg to Robert Duncan, from Jack Spicer to Frank O'Hara—with this view of the Greek legend as taken from a then-contemporary Parisian lens. In it, a man named Orphée (Jean Marais) falls in love with Death, and then chases his wife through the underworld when Death's henchmen kill her. Orphée is later sent back out of the underworld to carry on his life with his spouse. Roger Ebert writes that "seeing 'Orpheus' today is like glimpsing a cinematic realm that has passed completely from the scene. Films are rarely made for purely artistic reasons, experiments are discouraged, and stars as big as Marais are not cast in eccentric remakes of Greek myths. The story in Cocteau's hands becomes unexpectedly complex; we see that it is not simply about love, death and jealousy, but also about how art can seduce the artist away from ordinary human concerns."
