The article says near the bottom that the English consented to being replaced, this is factually wrong. No vote or bill has ever gone through parliament.

The Decline and Fall of America's W.A.S.P. Aristocracy, And What We Must Learn from It

This episode examines the rise, dominance, and disappearance of the WASPs, the old American families from the Northeast who dominated business, society, and politics for much of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It distinguishes them from the Southern gentry, and defines them as an upper class formed by intermarriage, inherited wealth, and shared institutions rather than just a group of rich individuals.

It then describes how the WASPs were economically and culturally powerful at their height. They funded railroads, industry, banking, museums, libraries, and opera houses, while shaping high society through prep schools, Ivy League colleges, clubs, debutante events, and church life. Their influence also extended into politics, largely through the Republican Party and through journals, donations, and private networks rather than direct office-holding.

I argue that the class declined because of three main factors: an addiction to leisure, inflation, and taxation. Many families came to prefer yachting, travel, parties, and passive investing over active oversight of businesses and fortunes. It also explains that their preference for bonds left them vulnerable when inflation rose after the gold standard weakened, reducing both the real value of their income and the value of their capital. Further, income taxes and death taxes made it difficult to preserve wealth, and many families tried risky investing or leverage instead of adapting. A few families, such as the Mellons and the Golets, survived by holding better assets, using trusts, and remaining attentive to their wealth, but most of the New York 400 that was so dominant in the Gilded Age had faded near-entirely away within a century.

This episode ends by drawing lessons from this history: the importance of duty, long-term thinking, solid assets, keeping fortunes consolidated, and staying involved in family and business affairs. The episode says the WASPs disappeared as a class because they stopped doing the work required to remain an upper class.

I'll remind people. We're running out of cheaper hydrocarbons. In ~200 years they'll essentially be gone. We need nuclear. Not just any nuclear, we need lead cooled faster reactors with breeding ratio of 1.05:1. Also, we need a giant manufacturing and recycling facility to close the fuel cycle and unlock millions of years of energy.

So, it is a 40mm naval gun being repurposed for counter drone work.

The Marlin 40 fires standard 40 mm L70 ammunition, the same family of rounds used by Bofors-type guns, including shells with programmable fuzes. On ships, it can fire single shots or bursts at 100 or 300 rounds per minute, carries up to 80 ready rounds, and has an effective range of about 4.5 km (2.8 miles). The turret turns a full 360 degrees and elevates from minus 20 to plus 85 degrees, so it can track targets almost directly overhead. The mount is in service with about 30 navies.

Who's got it worse? China has the GAE by the nose hairs with the rare earths but the GAE has aviation supply-chain and plastic feedstocks for control. Do you guys know of any other factors?

I'm going to remind everyone reading this post that the MIC naval yards are desperate for skilled labor and there's decades of work if you're capable.

Inside America's $66 Billion Bet To Beat China's Shipbuilding Empire

China is the world's top shipbuilder, and as it rapidly continues to expand its navy, the Trump administration is making American shipbuilding a national priority. We went inside a US naval shipyard to see how these vessels are built and why expanding America's fleet may be harder than it sounds.

The Marines Have A Big Machine Gun Problem

The U.S. Marine Corps may be reconsidering the role of belt-fed machine guns inside the infantry squad. Marines from 7th Marine Regiment recently trained with the Knightโ€™s Armament Light Assault Machine Gun, or LAMG, alongside soldiers from the 75th Ranger Regiment. The event follows years of debate over the Marine Corpsโ€™ decision to replace the M249 SAW in the automatic rifle role with the M27 Infantry Automatic Rifle. Marine professional writing has also increasingly discussed whether lightweight belt-fed weapons could restore sustained suppression at the squad level.

This video looks at why the Marines moved away from the M249, how the M27 fit the requirements of the Global War on Terror, and why preparation for conventional warfare could change that calculation. It also covers the KAC LAMG, fire superiority, suppression, Marine infantry squad organization, Force Design, and the challenges of using magazine-fed automatic rifles against enemy forces equipped with their own machine guns. There is currently no announced Marine Corps program to replace the M27 or adopt the LAMG, but recent training and public comments suggest the Corps is actively examining the capability.
