Supernumerary Rainbows over New Jersey
Yes, but can your rainbow do this? After the remnants of Hurricane Florence passed over the Jersey Shore, New Jersey, USA in 2018, the Sun came out in one direction but something quite unusual appeared in the opposite direction: a hall of rainbows. Over the course of the next half hour, to the delight of the photographer and his daughter, vibrant supernumerary rainbows faded in and out, with at least five captured in this featured single shot. Supernumerary rainbows only form when falling water droplets are all nearly the same size and typically less than a millimeter across. Then, sunlight will not only reflect from inside the raindrops, but interfere, a wave phenomenon similar to ripples on a pond when a stone is thrown in. In fact, supernumerary rainbows can only be explained with waves, and their noted existence in the early 1800s was considered early evidence of light's wave nature.

UAE asteroid probe reaches flight readiness ahead of 5 billion-km mission
Last updated: October 04, 2026 | 13:11
More than 150 engineers and scientists are working on the 5 billion-kilometre mission
Dubai: The spacecraft at the heart of the Emirates Mission to the Asteroid Belt has reached flight readiness less than two years after being developed, assembled and tested in the UAE, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of the UAE, and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai, has announced.
The Crown Prince of Dubai attended the unveiling of the probe, marking a major milestone for a mission that is expected to travel about 5 billion kilometres and explore seven asteroids.
Sheikh Hamdan wrote that more than 150 engineers and scientists are working as one national team on the mission, which forms part of the UAE’s effort to deepen its capabilities in one of the world’s most technologically advanced sectors.
“Developed, assembled and tested in the UAE, the probe has achieved flight readiness in less than two years,” he noted.
The mission represents one of the UAE’s most ambitious space projects, combining scientific exploration with a broader push to build domestic expertise in spacecraft development, engineering and advanced technology.
Dh44 billion space sector
Sheikh Hamdan highlighted the growing economic weight of the industry, with the UAE’s space sector now valued at more than Dh44 billion.
By 2031, the country aims to double the returns generated by its space economy and establish itself among the world’s 10 largest space economies.
The target reflects the UAE’s wider strategy of linking major scientific missions with investment in talent, research, technology and high-value industries.
Sheikh Hamdan praised the Emirati engineers and scientists turning what he described as ambitious aspirations into tangible achievements.
The UAE would continue investing in people, knowledge and technology, he added, as it seeks to build a new phase of its space programme and expand its role in the global space economy.
The Emirates Mission to the Asteroid Belt will take the spacecraft deep into the solar system on a journey spanning billions of kilometres, gathering scientific data from seven asteroids along the way.

NASA, SpaceX Set No Earlier Than Oct. 7 for Crew-12 Departure
October 3, 2026 3:19PM
Following a review weather and splashdown conditions off the coast of California, NASA and SpaceX are targeting no earlier than 1:05 a.m. EDT, Wednesday, Oct. 7, for the undocking of the agency’s Crew-12 mission from the International Space Station.
An Oct. 7 undock puts NASA astronauts Jessica Meir and Jack Hathaway, ESA (European Space Agency) astronaut Sophie Adenot, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev on a schedule to splash down off the coast of California about 11:25 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 8.
The exact splashdown time down could adjust slightly pending on the return location selected.
Mission managers will continue monitoring conditions in the recovery area, as undocking of the SpaceX Dragon depends on spacecraft readiness, recovery team readiness, weather, sea states, and other factors.
NASA and SpaceX will select a specific splashdown time and location closer to the Crew-12 spacecraft undocking. The next weather review will take place about 48 hours prior to undocking.
On Sunday, Oct. 4, the departing Crew-12 crew members will officially transfer their mission responsibilities to their new crewmates.
Meir will hand over command of the space station to Roscosmos cosmonaut Pyotr Dubrov during a change-of-command and farewell ceremony beginning at 10:20 a.m. EDT.
The crew’s farewell remarks and change-of-command ceremony will stream through a variety of platforms. Learn where to watch online:
