We just slapped Iran with big time sanctions. POTUS publicly stated "If you're doing business with Iran, you aren't doing business with the United States." Line in the sand.
CHINA, meanwhile, issues a statement to the effect that fuck you, we're going to do business with Iran. Just as the next phase of trade war tariffs comes into play.
Reconcile.
This has suddenly turned into a gigantic game of Chicken. If China doesn't back off, sanctions will be levied that will CRIPPLE the Chinese economy by denying them the US market. Individual companies will face sanction. The government itself might face sanction.
It used to be that we didn't fuck with a situation like that because it would raise oil prices. But thanks to shale, the US is a net energy exporter, now. The biggest in the world. Higher oil prices mean US companies get bigger profits. Sanctions against Chinese companies improve the competitive value of US made products.
I'd say about a 15% chance it escalates to a shooting war over this, but failing that I foresee China backing down, complaining bitterly about US hegemony.
That's a win-win situation.
