Judge Freezes Border Wall In Big Bend, A Sector Covering A Quarter Of The Border But Just 1-3% Of Apprehensions

A federal judge in El Paso on Friday halted border wall construction across Texas's Big Bend region, a stretch of the frontier that accounts for only a sliver of illegal crossings.

US District Judge Kathleen Cardone read her order from the bench, issuing a preliminary injunction against "ground-disturbing activities" that stays in place while the case plays out, the Texas Tribune reports. She found the plaintiffs' constitutional claims likely to succeed.

The suit was brought by the Center for Biological Diversity on behalf of the Friends of the Ruidosa Church and a local river guide and landowner. It targets the federal waivers that let construction proceed "without following the National Environmental Policy Act, the Archaeological and Historic Preservation Act and many other laws," per Inside Climate News.

The work in question includes vehicle barriers and access roads inside Big Bend's state and national parks, plus a 30-foot steel wall on private land outside them. According to the Tribune, there are five contracted wall projects in the region. In May, Customs and Border Protection awarded a $1.7 billion contract for border wall in Big Bend, KWTX reported.

The Big Bend sector covers about a quarter of the length of the US-Mexico border but accounts for only 1% to 3% of Customs and Border Protection's migrant apprehensions each year, according to the Tribune.

Inside Climate News reports DOJ lawyers "presented few counterarguments and did not present any witnesses." CBP said it remains "confident in our legal authorities to secure the border."

At the hearing, Adam Isacson, an analyst at the Washington Office on Latin America, presented data showing Big Bend in "distant last place" in unauthorized crossings among the nine sectors that make up the US border with Mexico, Inside Climate News reports.

Victorian Doctors Seek Answers From OpenAI And Governments Over Medicare Breach

The Australian Medical Association (AMA) Victorian branch has called on OpenAI and the Victorian and federal governments to explain how they will protect patient health data following a security incident in which an OpenAI agent gained unauthorized access to a Medicare statistics portal.

While the doctors' group noted that no personal information appears to have been accessed, AMA Victoria President Dr Simon Judkins asked, "What happens next time if an AI agent gains access to a system containing sensitive clinical information?"

Judkins said the breach raised serious questions for doctors and patients.

"Confidentiality remains absolutely critical to maintaining a trusted relationship between a doctor and their patient, and increasingly that depends on the security of the digital systems we use every day," he said.

"Patients and doctors need confidence that unauthorized access will be detected quickly and reported immediately … Why did it take nearly three months for Australian authorities to be notified?"

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the agent reached the Medicare Statistics Reporting Service portal, run by Services Australia, on June 18.

It accessed public and non-public files after finding a way around existing blocks. Albanese said no personal information is believed to have been accessed, though official investigations remain ongoing.

OpenAI notified the Australian government on Sept. 10 via an email sent to a public mailbox, according to the prime minister.

Services Australia subsequently reported the breach to the Australian Cyber Security Centre on Sept. 15.

"It took until Sept. 10 before there was any notification," Albanese said, adding that "there will obviously be legal consequences on it."

Other Agencies Affected

OpenAI confirmed its agents also accessed sites belonging to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) and NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research.

At the Victorian Department of Health, the company stated that agents used an exposed access key to retrieve aggregate statistics, though medical records were not accessed.

The AMA said that federal investigations are examining the agent's interactions across multiple government systems.

Federal Judge Rules Warrantless Flock Search Violated 4th Amendment Rights

A federal judge threw out drug evidence after ruling a sheriff’s deputy violated the Fourth Amendment by pulling a month of a driver’s location history from Flock’s camera network without a warrant.

U.S. District Judge Sara E. Hill granted Melisa Kyle’s motion to suppress and ruled the warrantless search of automated license plate reader data unconstitutional, according to the ruling. The drug prosecution against Kyle sits in the Northern District of Oklahoma.

Tulsa County Deputy Freddie Alaniz began trailing Kyle’s Mazda SUV for no reason beyond its California plate, according to the ruling. He queried the Flock system for her plate before he observed any traffic violation. The search logged her car more than 50 times across multiple states in a single month.

Hill upheld the traffic stop as valid at its start, according to the ruling. Her objection centered on what came next. Alaniz lacked reasonable suspicion to hold Kyle after he returned her license. The extended detention became unlawful.

PM says Israeli intel helped foil recent terror plot against British airbase, blasts settlement trade ban and Palestinian state recognition as appeasement of ‘Islamist forces’

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused the United Kingdom’s Labour government of behaving “like a rogue state” and appeasing “Islamist forces,” in a wide-ranging interview with the UK’s Daily Mail published Saturday amid deteriorating relations between Jerusalem and London.

Netanyahu’s criticism centered on the UK’s recent decision to ban imports of goods from Israeli settlements in the West Bank, as well as restrictions on arms exports and London’s recognition of a Palestinian state.

The prime minister contrasted those measures with intelligence cooperation between the two countries, pointing to Israeli information that he said recently helped British authorities thwart a suspected Iran-sponsored attack on RAF Fairford airbase.

“It was stopped. It was prevented,” Netanyahu said, adding that without the Israeli intelligence, “it would probably have gone through, and we don’t know how many British lives would have been lost.”

“It’s mind-blowing hypocrisy; I don’t know how many lives we have saved giving Britain information about impending attacks,” he said.

“There is a pressure from inside Britain to appease these various Islamist forces in Britain. And once you start appeasing, you don’t stop,” he said.

He said that the British government, “in order to ingratiate itself with its political base, has gone rogue. Like a rogue state.”

Asked about the state of bilateral relations, Netanyahu acknowledged that they were “not very good,” but said Israel continued to regard Britain as an ally.

Netanyahu argued that Britain was turning against Israel while failing to adequately confront Iran and its proxies.

“What do these people do? They hang gays, you know, they deprive women of any rights. They murder their own people in Gaza, or Lebanon, or Iran. Executing all their enemies. They are the opposite of democracies,” he said. “And what does the government in Britain do? It turns on the one democracy that is fighting these monstrous regimes in this terrible state (Iran), the worst terrorist state on the planet. That’s what Britain is doing.”

Asked whether Israel would continue sharing intelligence with Britain, Netanyahu declined to say, noting only that it had done so in the Fairford case.

Netanyahu also charged that Labour’s policies against Israel were fueling antisemitism in the UK.

“The Jewish people have suffered these kinds of vilifications that always, always preceded the most violent attacks on our people during the, you know, centuries of our exile and the various diasporas,” he said, drawing parallels to events leading up to the Holocaust in Nazi Germany.

Shifting his focus to Iran, Netanyahu predicted that the Islamic Republic would eventually collapse and urged Iranians opposed to the regime not to lose hope.

“This regime will fall. They take time, but they’ll fall. Right now, they’re very weak. President [Donald] Trump’s blockade is really weakening [the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps] a lot. So I’d say, don’t lose faith. Your day of freedom will come.”

Israeli minister says entire West Bank ‘belongs to Israel,’ threatens to dismantle Palestinian Authority

Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir claimed that all three administrative areas of the occupied West Bank “belong to Israel,” contradicting arrangements established under the Oslo Accords between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization.

Under the 1995 Oslo II Accord, the West Bank was divided into Areas A, B and C. Area A is under full Palestinian control, Area B is under Palestinian civilian and Israeli security control. Area C, which accounts for around 60% of the territory, is under full Israeli control.

“There is no difference between Areas A, B and C. The entire land is ours. This is our country,” Ben-Gvir told Israel’s right-wing Channel 14 on Thursday.

Ben-Gvir also threatened to dismantle the Palestinian Authority, and push for the displacement of Palestinians from West Bank and the Gaza Strip if he becomes the defense minister.

He claimed that 60% of Palestinians want to “emigrate,” despite reports to the contrary. “I will dedicate time to this, and I will manage the process continuously. Every week, I will hold a discussion involving all relevant parties,” he said.

Asked how Israel could provide additional forces for West Bank and Gaza, Ben-Gvir said: “It is very simple: The more you allow soldiers to shoot and use force, the less manpower you need.”

“I will remove the restrictions on our soldiers. Today, the police rules of engagement are much more lenient than those of the army,” he added, pointing to police use of gunfire against Palestinians.

Although Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has spoken about Palestinian displacement on several occasions, Ben-Gvir claimed the premier “did not want it enough” and blamed him for failing to advance such a policy.

The remarks come amid campaigning for Israel’s Oct. 27 Knesset election, as opinion polls indicate declining support for the governing coalition and gains for the opposition.

Ben-Gvir recently intensified threats against Palestinians amid heightened competition among Israeli parties, while also making repeated visits to Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied East Jerusalem and performing Talmudic rituals at the Western Wall.

Whistleblower who flagged Lutnicks links to Epstein dies

Former British banker and whistleblower Simon Andriesz, who outed Howard Lutnick’s links to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, has died by suicide.

Andriesz was previously a managing director at Wall Street firm BGC Group where Lutnick, now the US commerce secretary, was chief executive officer.

The death of the 57-year-old was confirmed by Andy Agathangelou, the founder of campaign group Transparency Task Force, which has previously hosted events related to whistleblowing with Andriesz.

Agathangelou said: “It is with great sadness that we share the news that Simon Andriesz, a valued member of our community, passed away last week.”
