Enmeshed in Corruption and Failed Socialism Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez Collapses Government and Calls for New Snap Election

Facing severe political crisis, the last proud socialist is under fire. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchezhas called for early elections in an effort to regain control of government that is rejecting all legislative efforts. However, the major problems he faces will likely lead to his exit from politics with the new election.
Corruption swirls Sanchez’s personal and political life.In May of this year, investigators raided the headquarters of his Socialist partyin a probe surrounding the misuse of party funds. In his personal life, his wife, Begoña Gómez, is under indictment for benefitting from her privileged position as the Prime Minister’s wife in relation to the creation of the university chair and her appointment as its director.Her passport was seized.
Additionally, Sánchez’s musician brother, David, is currently on trial in the southern city of Badajoz, accused of similar influence peddling.
The recent illegal migration influx has made matters worse, and there is asevere housing crisis directly related to mass migration from North Africathat Pedro Sanchez triggered with his executive policies and promises. All of this is coming to a head as the Prime Minister now calls for an election.
The pendulum never maintains itself on one extreme swing to the left, andnow the opposition parties on the right (People’s Party and Vox) are preparing for joint alignment and electoral victory.

Although Sánchez has established a reputation as a master of the political bounce-back, he faces a steep climb to turn this latest crisis to his advantage.
Polls overwhelmingly suggest that the country will vote in an administration led by the center-right People’s Party, currently supported by 34% of the electorate, compared with 26% backing the Socialist Party. The PP would likely partner with the far-right Vox party, which is projected to score 18%, according to POLITICO’s Poll of Polls. (read more)

A few weeks ago, the voters in Iceland rejected a referendum to join the European Union.Iceland remains a NATO ally, but not an EU member, this dynamic becomes more important when considering the Arctic defense strategy of President Trump and Secretary Rubio.
From the State Dept: Secretary of State Marco Rubio will travel to Reykjavík, Iceland; Athens, Greece; and Lisbon, Portugalfrom October 5-8, 2026.
Secretary Rubio will meet with Icelandic officials in Reykjavík to discuss economic and security collaboration. In Greece, Secretary Rubio will lead the United States delegation for the Sixth U.S.-Greece Strategic Dialogue, deepening our partnership on key Administration priorities, including defense cooperation and regional and energy security. I would also emphasize a little-known aspect to the Portuguese relationship. Portugal has one of the most effective intelligence operations in the world, in part due to their diplomatic corps who have groomed very strong relationships with allies and not-s0-friendly nations. Portugal maintains a very well-run, albeit very quiet intelligence system.
