Mossad-linked ex-German spy chief arrested for treason

August Hanning, previously tied to a high-profile kidnapping case, is accused of buying state secrets from his former aide

Former German intelligence chief August Hanning has been arrested on charges of espionage and treason, amid accusations that he recruited the former head of Israel’s Mossad spy agency to carry out a child kidnapping.

Hanning, who headed the BND from 1998 to 2005, was arrested on Tuesday along with his former aide within the agency, identified by prosecutors as ‘Manfred D’. Hanning is accused of buying state secrets from Manfred D, who remained in the BND after Hanning’s departure and served several of his successors.

Hanning acquired nearly 2,000 BND documents between 2010 and 2022, which he leveraged in his work as a private security consultant, prosecutors said.

In one case, Hanning allegedly used BND material to prepare an analytical report for an employee of a foreign intelligence service. He is also accused of maintaining “close contact with a representative of another foreign intelligence service,” to whom he passed information obtained by Manfred D “for several years,” according to the prosecutors’ statement.

Neither intelligence service was named in the statement, but law enforcement sources told German media that they do not suspect any links to Russia.

The Mossad connection

The espionage case was reportedly built on evidence found at Hanning’s residence in Hamburg, which was searched by local police in September 2025 as part of a separate investigation involving businesswoman Christina Block.

Block, an heiress to her family’s Block House restaurant group, is at the center of a high-profile custody dispute and is currently on trial for kidnapping. Prosecutors allege that she hired Hanning’s private security firm, System 360, and former state criminal police officer Thorsten Mehles to abduct her two youngest children from their father’s home in Denmark and return them to Germany.

After a foiled attempt by System360 and Mehles, Hanning allegedly contracted the job out to Yaakov Perry, the former chief of Israel’s domestic intelligence agency, Shin Bet. Perry, who now runs a private intelligence company called CGI Group, assembled a team that assaulted Block’s ex-husband and kidnapped the children. The ex-husband, Stefan Hansel, claims that Hanning also recruited former Mossad chief Danny Yatom to take part in the operation.

Questioned about these claims by Israeli media, Yatom said that he knew Hanning in the late 1980s, but had “no connection to this case.” However, speaking to Israeli media in 2021, Hanning said that he maintained “very close working relationships, even friendships” with Yatom and other Mossad officials long after he left the BND.

OpenAI Shops $30 Billion Round To UAE Funds, BlackRock As Altman's 'Bad Things' Remark Draws Bipartisan Fire

With its planned IPO on ice for the moment, OpenAI is pitching a $30 billion funding round to a group of United Arab Emirates sovereign funds led by Abu Dhabi's MGX, along with BlackRock, at a $1.4 trillion pre-money valuation, Bloomberg reported Monday. There is no lead investor, and the price was set by OpenAI rather than negotiated. Meanwhile CEO Sam Altman has sparked a firestorm in DC with comments that the world should accept "some bad things happening" for the benefits of AI.

The OpenAI round

The UAE funds are considering an investment up to $10 billion between them at that $1.4 trillion valuation - which is is 64% above the $852 billion post-money valuation of the $122 billion round in March. The figure would also place OpenAI's valuation above Anthropic, which was at $965 billion in May.

OpenAI's annualized revenue has reportedly passed $40 billion, up 70% since July. That makes the ask roughly 35x run-rate for a company that Fortune says booked $6.7 billion of revenue and an operating loss in Q2, and that the FT reported spent $34 billion last year. One FT source said OpenAI "needs capital." OpenAI says the March round left it with plenty. OpenAI filed confidentially for an IPO on June 8. Then, on Sept. 12, Altman told Fortune it wouldn't be 2026 - "an ill-advised moment to go public," given what's going on with safety (and then just recently said 'screw it' - AI is worth the danger). That said, in April the WSJ reported that OpenAI had missed revenue and user targets and that CFO Sarah Friar was worried the company might not be able to pay for future compute contracts if revenue failed to catch up.

Then there's the backstop. As we reported last November, Friar suggested the federal government could "backstop" OpenAI's data-center financing. In June, as we detailed, Altman began floating a plan to hand small OpenAI equity stakes to ordinary Americans, which we read as a backdoor backstop. We asked at the time whether the bailout would come before the IPO or after. Nobody mentioned the third option: a $30 billion bridge round, priced by the issuer, in between.

DeepSeek

Overnight, Bloomberg also reported that DeepSeek is close to locking in at least 80 billion yuan ($12 billion) of new funding, with signed term sheets that could take the total to 100 billion yuan - twice the 50 billion it originally set out to raise. Tencent and CATL are writing the biggest checks. This is the same round DeepSeek paused in late July, as we noted, after transcripts leaked of founder Liang Wenfeng saying that Huawei was giving DeepSeek about 16,000 Ascend 950s while the internet giants got hundreds of thousands, and that DeepSeek could get hold of some processors he called "noncompliant." The round restarted in August at a valuation of about $74 billion and has now blown through its target. On annualized revenue reported at $400-500 million in July, that valuation is well over 100x sales. OpenAI at 35x looks cheap next to it.

The 'bad things' backlash

Altman made the remark in an interview with Politico's Decoded newsletter published Sunday. "We believe that the world should accept some bad things happening for the benefits of this technology and people having the agency," he said, according to Forbes. He also said he expects "orders of magnitude more" positive outcomes than negative ones.

Drones Hit Two Ships Within Bulgaria's Economic Zone, Sinking One, Crew Missing

Escalation in the Black Sea has now become a daily occurrence in the context of the Ukraine war, and more dangerous is that Russia and NATO are inching closer to direct conflict.

Bulgaria has announced Tuesday that two commercial ships were hit by drones in what it says marks a first attack on shipping within the NATO member’s exclusive economic zone in the Black Sea. Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev declared "This is an unacceptable attack in Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone. It is a blatant violation of international law and maritime law."

The vessels have been identified as the Togo-flagged Alfa Watan and the Palau-flagged Able. Both caught fire as a result, with the Alfa Watan having quickly sank at the scene, with no immediate word of the crew's fate.

The impact on Togo-flagged ship was reportedly much bigger and more devastating. As for another interesting and alarming detail:

The crew of the first ship confirmed it was under attack from both "aerial and sea drones," Radev said.

And this was followed by a threat related to a mystery ship off Bulgaria:

Radev stated that the Bulgarian defense ministry is tracking a suspicious “drifting ship” in the Black Sea, which has reportedly been on the country’s radar since August. "If it continues to somehow head toward our coast, we are fully ready to act," he added.

As for the Able, all 18 crew members were rescued amid the Bulgarian emergency response, with two among the sailors suffering severe injuries and transported to the hospital. The attacks happened at around 3am, some 80 miles off Bulgaria's coast.

Unlike in prior Black Sea incidents where authorities were quick to name Russia's military as behind the attack, it is curious that in this case the Bulgarians have not been quick to make allegations as the origin of the drones has not been established.

PM Radev continued, “As a state responsible within our exclusive economic zone for the health and lives of anyone navigating in this area, regardless of who is responsible, we are obliged to conduct emergency search and rescue operations."

"What is happening is seriously disrupting shipping in the Black Sea, driving up insurance costs even further and making shipping extremely difficult," he added.

Monday saw a prior major maritime attack incident which was quickly widely blamed on Russia. A Turkish cargo ship identified as the Royad Mammadov was sunk after being hit by a drone, after it left the Ukrainian port of Ismail in the Odesa region.

Google Co-Founder Sergey Brin Drops $102 Million to Stop Democrats’ Insane ‘Billionaire Tax’ in California — Could Face $13 Billion Bill Under Radical Socialist Plan

Google co-founder Sergey Brin has now poured $102 million into the fight against California’s proposed billionaire tax, a one-time 5% hit that could cost him roughly $13 billion if voters pass it in November.

Campaign filings show the Google co-founder has sent the money to Building a Better California, the PAC and advocacy group leading the opposition to Proposition 40 and pushing rival measures that could knock the tax out even if it wins

Opponents of the levy have raised more than $187 million. Brin is the single largest donor. Groups backing the tax have raised about $32 million.

Proposition 40 would slap a one-time 5% tax on the net worth of roughly 200 California billionaires, with residency pinned to January 1, 2026, so the ultra-rich cannot simply pack a moving truck after Election Day. Ninety percent of the money would go to the state’s health care programs.

The other 10% would go to education, food assistance, and administration. Fortune put Brin’s net worth near $260 billion, which is how the $13 billion exposure is calculated. Other tallies put the bill even higher.

Corporate Media Don’t Understand the Houthis—and Don’t Want You to, Either

As news about Yemen's Houthi rebels once again permeates US media, mainstream outlets are as usual rife with imperial propaganda distorting the facts.

It's that time of year again: The Houthis are making the news—and so is the Western corporate media narrative that surrounds them.

The Houthis—formally Ansar Allah, “Supporters of God”—are from the Zaydi Shia minority in Yemen, and have governed the most populous sections of the country, including the capital Sanaa, since the start of Yemen’s civil war in 2014.

Like many a “civil” war, the conflict has plenty of outside participants—most notably Saudi Arabia, which led a coalition of Arab states (with the backing of the United States) in an effort to bomb and starve Yemen away from Houthi control.

In 2022, a tenuous truce took hold between the Houthis and the Saudi-backed Yemeni government, but the Saudi blockade of the country was never lifted.

This July, the Houthis declared their own naval blockade of Saudi Arabia, in response to the Saudi siege and resumed bombing of Yemen. In a rapid September offensive, the group completed its takeover of Yemen’s Red Sea Coast and the strategic Bab al-Mandeb strait, putting Saudi oil shipping operations in a decisive bind. The Houthis have also launched missiles at Saudi Arabia in response to Saudi attacks on the country.

‘Who are the Houthis?’

The offensive has prompted a slew of media interventions to ostensibly explain to everyone who the Houthis are. The New York Times (9/23/26), for instance, ran the headline “Who Are the Houthis, and What Do They Want?”; the BBC (9/24/26) ran the very same title, minus the comma.

The Washington Post (9/15/26) asked: “Who Are the Houthis, the Iran-Backed Rebels Threatening a Key Maritime Passage?” Its headline characterization revealed what corporate media see as the primary thing anyone needs to know about the Houthis: that they are simply proxies of Iran, the West’s current favorite enemy.

In a typical example, a recent CNN dispatch (9/21/26) identified the Houthis as “Iran-backed” in both the headline and the first sentence, with a reference to “Tehran’s proxies” appearing further down.

For its part, an Associated Press exclusive (9/23/26) on how “Iranian Advisers Helped Houthis Seize Yemen’s Red Sea Coast in Less Than 48 Hours” sounded the alarm that “Iranian Revolutionary Guard advisers were in the field helping direct the battle,” in a show of “how Iran has built the Houthis into a major regional partner able to open a new front in the wider war with the US.”

Lost in the AP report, of course, is the fact that neither Iran nor the Houthis had anything to do with starting the “wider war.”

Following the launch earlier this year of the deranged US/Israeli war on Iran, the Houthis largely stayed on the sidelines. But now that they are acting up again, the media seem happy to oversimplify and demonize them as foot soldiers of Tehran.

The media’s reductionist approach erases the Houthis’ own domestic motives and aims, not to mention their own reasons for standing up to Saudi Arabia, the US, and Israel. That essentially eliminates the need for further investigation or thought about appropriate diplomatic responses, and justifies whatever aggression is meted out against Yemen by Saudi Arabia and friends. It also props up the idea that the US is fundamentally right to go after a proxy-happy Iran bent on overturning the proper regional order.

Granted, the Washington Post’s “Who Are the Houthis” explainer (9/15/26) does allow a bit of space for the view of a “pro-Houthi commentator,” Hussain al-Bukhaiti, who

said Houthi demands include free movement at Yemen’s ports and airports, the exchange of all prisoners of war and the use of Yemen’s oil revenue—much of which is under Saudi control—to pay the salaries of civil servants and services across the country.

But this idea that the Houthis have interests beyond those of Iran is immediately dismissed by an anonymous Yemeni official in the next paragraph, who the Post paraphrases saying that “the Houthi fighters were being closely directed by Iranians on the ground.” And who should Post readers believe—the Iran proxies or the US allies?

‘US-backed’ Saudi Arabia?

The media’s longstanding pathological refusal to discuss the Houthis as anything but “Iran-backed” raises the question of why, for the sake of symmetry at least, Saudi Arabia is never defined as “US-backed.” To be sure, it would be more difficult to cast the kingdom as a victim of Houthi antagonism were media outlets to provide regular reminders of the global superpower’s role in underwriting Saudi-led slaughter in Yemen.

TRANS NURSE ACCUSED OF SNAPPING A PREMATURE BABY’S BONES IN THE NICU

Kieran Ansley, a former Michigan children’s-hospital nurse identified in published reporting as transgender, faces two felony child-abuse counts after a 4-month-old girl was found bruised and fractured.

Kieran Ansley, 43, is a transgender former NICU nurse charged after a premature baby girl was found with fractures in both legs, a blue-black tongue, and bruising across her body at Michigan’s Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital.

Michigan News Source identified Ansley as a biological woman who identifies as a transgender man. The hospital and local court reporting identify him as the nurse who had cared for the infant overnight.

Ansley faces two second-degree child-abuse felonies, each carrying up to 10 years, and two fourth-degree child-abuse misdemeanors. The girl had survived a 23-week birth at just 1 pound, 1 ounce and was close to going home, WOOD-TV reported.

Court records cited by MLive state the mother returned to the Grand Rapids NICU on April 3 and found injuries that were not there when she left. The affidavit says a doctor found fractures near the girl’s knees and ankles, plus bruising on her arms, leg, abdomen, buttock, and tongue. Testing ruled out medical conditions that could explain the injuries, the affidavit states.

Hospital logs recorded 32 entries into the infant’s room during the overnight shift. The affidavit attributes 27 to Ansley, WZZM reported.

Corewell Health fired Ansley and said it acted immediately after receiving the allegation. Ansley is out on bond with an electronic tether. His attorney said the defense will investigate and that the truth will emerge.

Children Wounded as Israeli Military Continues Bombing Tent Camps in Gaza

At least one Palestinian was killed by an Israeli strike on al-Mawasi, southern Gaza

At least one Palestinian was killed, and several others were wounded on Monday in Israeli attacks targeting al-Mawasi in southern Gaza, an area filled with sprawling tent encampments housing Palestinian families displaced by Israel’s genocidal war.

The Anadolu Agency reported that an Israeli strike in al-Mawasi killed one Palestinian man and wounded four people, including a mother and her two children. Later in the day, the Palestinian news agency WAFA reported that an Israeli drone targeted a tent in the Algerian Camp within al-Mawasi, injuring three people, including a woman and a child.

Anadolu also reported attacks in northwestern Gaza, including naval fire that hit a woman in the head. A child was also reportedly shot in the chest by Israeli forces in the area.

Gaza’s Health Ministry said in its daily update on Monday, released about midday Gaza time, that Israeli forces killed at least three Palestinians and wounded 26 over the previous 24-hour period. Two other Palestinians died of wounds sustained in previous attacks, and one body was recovered from the rubble.

Since the so-called ceasefire deal was signed nearly one year ago in October 2025, the IDF has killed 1,460 Palestinians and wounded 5,116. Gaza’s Government Media Office has said that it has recorded more than 5,000 Israeli ceasefire violations.

The US continues to back Israel’s attacks in Gaza despite President Trump and the so-called Board of Peace recently announcing that Hamas had agreed to a US-proposed disarmament deal.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected the potential agreement, and other senior Israeli ministers continue to make clear that their ultimate goal for Gaza is the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian population.

Look at the dread on the faces of the guys next to him!

Netanyahu claims Hamas will try to attack Israel to influence upcoming election

Katz says Israel has intel indicating terror group plans to target IDF in Gaza on Wednesday’s 3-year anniversary of Oct. 7 attack, warns Hamas and Gaza civilians will pay price if troops harmed

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed Tuesday that Hamas will try to carry out an attack ahead of the October 27 election, while insisting that Israel was prepared for such a possibility.

“Because Hamas is so weak, it will try to challenge us with the remnants of its forces ahead of the election in an attempt to influence it,” Netanyahu said during a cabinet meeting. “We are prepared for this. First and foremost, we will thwart such attempts, and in any event, we will respond with overwhelming force if they make that mistake.”

The prime minister said Israel has “turned the tables” since Hamas’s October 7, 2023, invasion and massacre in southern Israel, which sparked what he has framed as a “seven-front war.”

“Israel is the strongest country in the Middle East, and our enemies are weaker than ever,” he declared. “I say to all our enemies: Look at what we have done to you on seven fronts… Don’t mess with us.”

But despite three years of fighting and pledges from Netanyahu of “total victory,” Hamas remains in power in Gaza, albeit controlling less than 50 percent of the Strip. Netanyahu’s opponents argue that his reliance on far-right coalition partners demanding the depopulation of Gaza prevented him from approving the establishment of an alternative government to Hamas.

Opposition lawmakers have also accused Netanyahu of trying to stir panic ahead of the Knesset election, which is just three weeks away.

A similar warning of a potential Hamas attack was issued earlier Tuesday by Defense Minister Israel Katz, who said in a statement that he had instructed the IDF to “increase its readiness and be prepared for any possible scenario in Gaza” ahead of the third anniversary of Hamas’s October 7 onslaught on Wednesday.

Katz cited “intelligence indicating that Hamas intends to try to carry out assaults and attacks against our forces in Gaza on that day.”

In his statement, the defense minister said the IDF must prepare for worst-case scenarios, and “forceful action should be taken in response to any intelligence or warning to thwart any threat, in addition to the forceful activity already being carried out.”

If Israeli forces are harmed, Katz said, “Hamas and the population of Gaza will pay a heavy price, beyond all proportion.”

Last year, on the second anniversary of Hamas’s devastating October 7 onslaught, terrorists in Gaza launched a rocket at the border community of Netiv Ha’asara.
