Suggest a maximum defensive posture.

Block cookies except from sites visited.

Add Ghostery to block trackers (requires manual operation on visited sites; then their trackers are blocked thereafter).

Add AdBlockPlus to avoid downloading anything that's an ad or 3rd party content; may have unintended benefit of reducing bandwidth use and may avoid the BC miner scripts.

Don't visit dodgy websites.

Use a firewall (in your modem/router, or software firewall in your PC).

 

These are some basic security measures. Depending on personal expertise, many others are possible too.

Once your GC HW is f'd tho, not aware of a fix.

 

Ubuntu here; have not experienced those problems you mention. Have had other ISP- and modem-related problems tho. All modems are potentially subject to hacking and injected malware/spyware.
