DENVER (KDVR) — Some ballots in a few counties around the state have an issue printed on them that they shouldn’t be voting on — Issue 7A.
The Secretary of State’s office said that it’s now working with those affected counties to make sure only the correct votes are counted.
Issue 7A involves a tax in support of the Colorado Connector train, but only certain municipalities where the new tax would take effect are supposed to vote on it. If you live in certain areas of Adams, Arapahoe, Douglas and Weld Counties, you may have issue 7A on your ballot even though it’s not intended for you.
The Secretary of State’s office said that the issue was included on more ballots in those counties than it should have been. The area where the issue matters was decided by SB26-172, which passed earlier this year to set the boundaries on the Front Range Passenger Rail District.
While it’s currently unknown what caused the issue, FOX31 political analyst Andy Boian said the problem could’ve stemmed from a number of different places, such as the coalition that got the issue on the ballot, the county commissioners, the clerk’s office or the SOS themselves.
But he said it shouldn’t be a difficult problem to solve.
“If you don’t fall within those areas affected, please don’t vote. Just leave it blank that’s the easiest way to do it,” Boian said. “They can actually program the machines to cut off ballots where it shouldn’t be counted and the vote just simply won’t be counted. Whether you voted for it or not, it just will ignore that vote. It’s a simple thing to fix.”
The Secretary of State’s office said it will now assist affected counties so that only eligible voters have their vote in this contest counted.
