Passing alpha particles through a very thin glass window and trapping them in a discharge tube allowed researchers to study the emission spectrum of the captured particles, and ultimately proved that alpha particles are helium nuclei. Other experiments showed beta radiation, resulting from decay and cathode rays, were high-speed electrons. Likewise, gamma radiation and X-rays were found to be high-energy electromagnetic radiation (photons).
Bolivian police arrested Attorney General Roger Mariaca and Santa Cruz regional prosecutor Alberto Zeballos on Wednesday night, two days after the United States revoked their visas and accused them of corruption linked to drug trafficking.
Officers from the Special Intelligence Police Center (CEIP) entered the Attorney General’s Office in Sucre and detained public ministry officials there. The raid followed the arrests of Mariaca and Zeballos at Viru Viru International Airport in Santa Cruz. Police also blocked a press conference that the Attorney General’s Office had scheduled. Staff at the office described the operation as illegal and said officers arrived without a judicial warrant; the institution publicly called Mariaca’s detention a “kidnapping.”
