Trump Treasury Blocks $175 Million In Federal Payments To Dead Recipients

Treasury identified and returned about 13,500 payments that would have gone to people listed as deceased.

Access to the Do Not Pay system grew from roughly 4 percent of federal programs at the end of fiscal 2025 to 99 percent in fiscal 2026.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the department is using better data, stronger controls, and advanced technology.

Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., supported the efforts and had pushed for Treasury access to Social Security death records.

Congress advanced legislation to permanently allow Social Security to share its full Death Master File with the Do Not Pay system.

Treasury added checks for bank account ownership and Taxpayer Identification Numbers.

These checks became fully operational Sept. 30.
