Government names 8 groups 'vulnerable' as 'American Covid' spreads - full list
Cases of the Covid-19 strain are continuing to surge across the UK with a "stay at home" warning issued by the NHS and UKHSA.
The XFG variant of Covid-19, also known as American Covid, is actively spreading across the UK and the government has named the eight groups of people who are "particularly vulnerable" to the virus. Data from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) shows a surge in cases in recent weeks, with documented infections rising from 1,374 in August to 4,589 in September - a jump of 230%. Meanwhile, hospital admissions for patients with Covid increased from 950 in August to 4,939 in September.
The variant is an offshoot of the Omicron family, with common symptoms including fever or chills, a continuous cough, shortness of breath, body aches, headaches and a blocked nose. The more severe symptoms are a painful sore throat, a hoarse or croaky voice, nausea, and diarrhoea.
