MN Police Chief: ‘Ridiculous’ That People Are More Worried About Calling Things Racist Than Somali Gang Issue

On Thursday’s broadcast of FOX 9 Minneapolis-St. Paul’s “FOX 9 All Day,” Bloomington, MN Police Chief Booker Hodges said that “We’re dealing with Somali American gangs right now.” People shouldn’t judge the “vast majority” who are law-abiding by the few, and “people are worried about calling something racist more than they are fixing the problem, and it’s just ridiculous to me.”

Hodges stated, “I pride myself on telling the truth. I’m not going to sugarcoat it. We’re dealing with Somali American gangs right now. Throughout my life, we’ve dealt with Hmong American gangs, African American gangs, Italian gangs. We’ve dealt with different groups throughout history in this country who are, unfortunately, being involved in gang activity. Now, by no means does this mean that every member of the Somali community — Somali American community is involved in these activities, because they’re not. The vast majority of Somalis, just like the rest of us — Somali Americans, go to work every single day, busting their butt, trying to make a living. And when you are really involved in the community like I am, and I’ve been like this before I put this uniform on, I see these people, every day, working, busting their butt to make their American Dream.”

He continued, “So this — to say it’s racist, it’s like, no, we’re not — I’m not going to go down that road. And others can choose to do that. But, ultimately, if you don’t identify a problem, there’s no way you’re going to fix it.

And it’s just, people are worried about calling something racist more than they are fixing the problem, and it’s just ridiculous to me.”

Hodges concluded that we shouldn’t be “pegging people and dumping them into groups based on a few people.”

Bloomington PD chief on what's fueling Somali gang violence

Bloomington Police Chief Booker Hodges joins FOX 9 All Day to discuss his department’s role in the investigation of an alleged plot to attack the Mall of America and why he says “the system worked” to thwart it. Hodges also addresses recent Somali American gang violence, including a shooting involving more than 100 rounds, the role of social media

Yup. I think we should all take a weekslong respite from polling much like James Talarico is taking a 2weekslong break from being an apostate uberlib on the campaign trail to just simmer and enjoy these Co/Efficient polls. Because I just finished doing some math problems on Show more

Trump establishes committee to investigate Federal Reserve's Lisa Cook in latest effort to fire her

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump opened another chapter in his effort to fire Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook Friday by establishing a "committee of inquiry" to investigate allegations thatshe made false statements in mortgage applications.

The inquiry will include a hearing at the White House Nov. 5, Trump said in a written memo, that Cook "shall" attend to answer questions from the committee. The hearing wouldn't be public but a transcript would be published, the memo said.

Trump's extraordinary demand that Cook testify before the committee will likely renew concerns about threats to the Federal Reserve's independence. The president has called for the central bank to cut its key interest rate, but just last month, the Fed raised it instead, led by Chairman Kevin Warsh, whom Trump appointed earlier this year.

Trump's attempts to fire Cook from the Fed's seven-member board of governors represent the first time in the central bank's 113-year history that a president has sought to remove a Fed governor.

"As President, it is my job to ensure the laws are faithfully executed, including by firing subordinates who cannot be trusted to tell the truth and follow the law," Trump wrote in the memorandum.

Cook's attorneys, Abbe Lowell and Norman Eisen, said they were considering having Cook appear at the Nov. 5 hearing and respond to the charges.

"We have engaged with the White House to evaluate whether the process proposed has a possibility of being a genuine one and not simply a box checking exercise," Lowell and Eisen said in a statement. "Governor Cook welcomes the opportunity to present the facts so she can clear her name and demonstrate there is no legal basis to fire her."

Trump initially tried to fire Cook in August 2025 after alleging she had committed mortgage fraud by declaring two different properties to be her "primary" residence in mortgage applications in 2021. Mortgages on primary homes can often receive a lower interest rate or other beneficial terms.

Lowell and Eisen have previously said Cook committed an "inadvertent error" and did refer to one of the properties as a vacation home in other documents.

"An inadvertent error is not fraud, as the President and a third of his cabinet should know because they reportedly did the same thing," Lowell and Eisen said in August.

Trump and some of his economic advisers have blamed the Fed's broader rate-setting committee, which includes 12 voting members and 19 officials in total, for forcing the rate hike. As a member of the board of governors, Cook is also one of the 12 voting members of the committee. The vote to lift rates Sept. 16 was unanimous.

The move follows a Supreme Court ruling in June that Cook could keep her job after Trump sought to fire her last year. That ruling included a footnote that said nothing prevented Trump from "trying again" as long as she was given proper notice and an opportunity to respond to the charges.

Cook has denied any wrongdoing and has not been charged with a crime.

Mike Ditka, Chicago Bears Hall of Fame legend, dies at 86

Fri, Oct 9, 2026 at 11:08 AM EDT.1/2

Of all the quotes attributed to Mike Ditka over the years, there's one in particular that stands out when it comes to the way he lived his life in football.

"Living in the past is for cowards," the football legend once said. "If you live in the past, you die in the past."

Like many other things Ditka said, it was brash and impulsive. It made no pretensions about being delicate or polite.

It was, however, an accurate depiction of the way Ditka kept progressing and evolving in over 60 years of being involved with the sport. He succeeded more than he failed, but he claimed that didn't matter much.

"Success isn't permanent and failure isn't fatal," went one of Ditka's other famous quotes.

Ditka died on Friday, his family announced. He was 86.

Jarrett Payton, Walter Payton's son, announced the news on Chicago's 104.3 The Score. Payton shared a statement from the Ditka family on X:

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Mike Ditka. While the world knew Mike as a Hall of Fame football player, legendary coach, and leader of the Chicago Bears' Super Bowl XX championship team, we knew him as the heart of our family. Mike will be missed beyond measure and remembered forever. With love and gratitude, The Ditka Family

In a football career that spanned nearly five decades, Ditka earned induction into both the College Football and Pro Football Hall of Fames, won NFL championships as a player, an assistant and a head coach, the latter coming in the 1985 season, when he led the Chicago Bears to its first and still only Super Bowl title.

The 1985 championship launched Ditka into a new level of fame. He cashed checks for pitching a wide variety of products, was lovingly lampooned on a classic "Saturday Night Live" sketch and became the closest thing the Chicago sporting scene has ever had to a patron saint.

But while Chicago's triumph over New England in January 1986 remained the high point in Ditka's career, it was far from the only highlight.

Indeed, few men have experienced Ditka's level or breadth of success in the game. His coaching days were preceded by a Hall of Fame playing career with the Bears and Cowboys, then followed with successful ventures in both broadcasting and business. In his later years, Ditka started the "Gridiron Greats Assistance Fund," an organization designed to help struggling ex-players who hadn't been rewarded as handsomely by the game as he was.

From Pennsylvania to Chicago

Though he looked as if he was from one of Chicago's many Polish neighborhoods, Ditka was born "Michael Dyczko" on Oct. 18, 1939 in Carnegie, Pennsylvania. The son of a welder, he played high school football in Aliquippa and his stardom in steel country gave him the "Iron Mike" nickname that would stick for decades after he left the state.

After a successful collegiate career at Pitt, Ditka was drafted by the Bears with the fifth overall pick in the 1961 NFL Draft. He won that season's Rookie of the Year award and was a key part of Chicago's 1963 NFL championship team under George Halas, the last Bears team to win a title until Halas hired Ditka to return the team to glory in the '80s.

Ditka was traded to the Eagles in 1967, but eventually landed in Dallas, where he won Super Bowl titles with the Cowboys both as a player (VI) and an assistant coach (XII). He and Oakland Raiders coach Tom Flores remain the only men to win Super Bowls as a player, assistant and coach.

After nearly a decade spent as an assistant under Cowboys legend Tom Landry, Ditka sent a letter to Halas saying he was "ready" to return home and lead the Bears. Halas took him up on his offer for the 1982 season and within three seasons, Ditka took the Bears to the NFC title game.

Ditka had a distinct coaching style

Ditka's leadership style could best be described as volatile, and his relationships with players, fellow coaches and media were far from perfect. Even though the egos belonging to Ditka and defensive coordinator Buddy Ryan could barely co-exist in the same locker room, the 1985 Bears became one of the sport's greatest teams, going 15-1 and shutting out two teams in the NFC playoffs before shellacking the Patriots 46-10 in Super Bowl XX.

Ryan left to become the Eagles' head coach after the Super Bowl. Ditka and the drama-filled and often injured Bears never again reached the top, soon outclassed in the NFC by San Francisco, Washington and New York. In later years, members of the '85 team would come out and say Ditka should've won at least one more title with the talent he had, a charge with which the coach himself later agreed.

Ditka was fired following the 1992 season, capping an 11-year run that saw the Bears go 106-62. He surfaced in New Orleans in 1997 for a three-year stint that would have been largely forgettable were it not for his decision to trade away all of the Saints' picks in 1999 (plus a first-rounder in 2000) for the right to move up and take Heisman Trophy winner Ricky Williams. The pair posed as a just-married couple for the cover of ESPN: The Magazine, with Williams donning a wedding dress.

Ditka remained visible after coaching career

Following his departure from New Orleans, Ditka resumed a broadcasting career he'd started with NBC and took jobs with CBS, then ESPN. He cultivated his personality into a successful and pervasive brand, running popular restaurants in the Chicagoland area and putting his visage on everything from fine wine and bloody mary mix to salsa and giardiniera, a spicy Italian relish that is popular in the Chicagoland area.

A staunch Republican, Ditka considered running for Illinois' open Senate seat in 2004 but ultimately decided against it.

A Democrat named Barack Obama ended up winning the office, and Ditka, with no small amount of bitterness, would later remark that the course of American history would have been different had he decided to pursue the office.

New poll shows Washington state voters are ready to end boys competing in girls' sports

Let's Go Washington released data from 7,500 likely voters showing strong bipartisan support for the K-12 sports measure

October 9, 2026 9:43am EDT.1/2

The people of Washington state haven't officially spoken yet,but new polling revealed what they might actually say.

The hottest-button issue on the Nov. 3 ballot isInitiative 638, a measure that would ban biological boys from competing against girls in K-12 sports. And Wednesday, data suggested that it has a strong chance of passing.

Let's Go Washington, the group behind the initiative, released numbers showing that 56% of 7,500 of likely Washington voters would vote "yes" on I-638, 24% would vote "no" and 22% were undecided. In terms of support by political affiliation, the poll showed that 73% of Republican respondents support the measure, along with 48% of Democrats and 52% of independents.

Keep in mind, this was not an independent poll, and the full methodology — including margin of error — has not been disclosed. But these data don't suggest a photo finish on the initiative come November so much as a rout.

"We're not surprised by the results, because it's exactly what we've been hearing from people when we're making calls, knocking on doors and talking to people at events," Let's Go Washington communications director Hallie Herzberg told OutKick. "The opposition is loud and they're intimidating and they're trying to bully people into being quiet, but we've seen and heard from people standing with us saying "enough is enough, high school girls are not the villains."

As it stands, 27 states have laws prohibiting biological males from competing against girls in K-12 sports. But 27 were won by Donald Trump in 2024, and none of those laws were enacted by voters.

So not only could Washington become the first blue state with enforced gender separation in school sports, but also the first where voters themselves put that policy into place.

This was a point of emphasis at an I-638 rally in Vancouver, Wash., last Saturday, where five female athletes who had to compete against biological males and/or share a locker room with them shared their stories. One of them spoke about two mustached boys flexing in the mirror of the girls locker room before her basketball game, while another detailed how the WIAA — Washington's high school sports governing body — launched an investigation for harassment and bullying because she said "you're a man" to an 18-year-old male her team had to compete against.

But it wasn't just current or former Washingtonians speaking up on the issues — it was women from around the country. Because they know that I-638 passing could set off a chain reaction across the nation.

"If we can show that a state like Washington has enough common sense to stand up for the girls and women, then any other state can do so as well," said student-athlete Frances Staudt. "I think we need to know that it's possible to be done."

Opponents of the initiative aren't arguing that girls competing against boys is perfectly fine.Instead, they're resorting to scare tactics — warning that I-638 could subject girls to "invasive genital inspections" as early as kindergarten. But the initiative contains no language regarding such inspections, and as XX-XY Athletics founder Jennifer Sey has pointed out, none of the 27 states with enforced gender separation in sports are performing these exams. Why would it be different in Washington?

Biological males taking over girls' spaces in sports is no phantom issue in the Evergreen State. Last year, trans track athlete Veronica Garcia won the Washington state title in the 400 meters. Last week, OutKick reported that a Washington family requested a SCOTUS injunction after their daughter was allegedly assaulted by a trans athlete last year. And this fall, Camas High cross country runner Logan Mihailoff switched from the boys team — where he finished 76th in a September event — to the girls team midseason. He has already won a varsity meet against the girls.

These are precisely the kinds of situations that Let's Go Washington says I-638 is intended to prevent. Which is why Herzberg cautioned supporters not to take the poll results for granted.

"It's not a shoo-in by any means," she said. "We don't feel like we can just relax now and ride the wave. There's still a ton of work that needs to be done."

Don't underestimate the fear this bill's foes can instill in voters. It's what they specialize in. But this poll suggests Washingtonians are standing up to the bullies. Sanity may indeed prevail.
