NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day

October 10, 2025

Lunar Farside

Tidally locked in synchronous rotation, the Moon always presents its familiar nearside to denizens of planet Earth. From lunar orbit, the Moon's farside can become familiar, though. In fact this sharp picture, a mosaic from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter's wide angle camera, is centered on the lunar farside. Part of a global mosaic of over 15,000 images acquired between November 2009 and February 2011, the highest resolution version shows features at a scale of 100 meters per pixel. Surprisingly, the rough and battered surface of the farside looks very different from the nearside covered with smooth dark lunar maria. A likely explanation is that the farside crust is thicker, making it harder for molten material from the interior to flow to the surface and form dark, smooth maria.

Soviet Meteor 2-7 satellite fragments again in low Earth orbit

October 10, 2026 at 9:16 AM

LeoLabs detected dozens of debris fragments from the defunct Soviet-era Meteor 2-7 weather satellite, marking another breakup event in recent months.

A defunct Soviet-era weather satellite has fragmented into multiple pieces in low Earth orbit, according to space monitoring firm LeoLabs.

The company identified a debris-generating event at the known orbital location of Meteor 2-7 while the object passed over one of its tracking sites in Western Australia.

Recent pattern of orbital breakups

LeoLabs reported observing an estimated dozens of fragments surrounding the spacecraft, which was launched in 1981.

This disintegration follows several other satellite breakup incidents recorded in recent months, including the confirmed fragmentation of the Cold War-era US spy satellite USA-32 in September 2026.

In a statement posted on X, LeoLabs described this as the latest chapter in a series of events witnessed over the past six months.

The company noted that these occurrences collectively point to a worrying trend regarding space safety and security, emphasizing the urgent need for continuous sensing capabilities.

Historical context and altitude details

Orbital debris expert Jim Shield indicated on X that Meteor 2-7 had previously broken up in March 2004.

He specified that the current incident occurred at an altitude of approximately 855 kilometers (530 miles), stating that spatial debris density is highest at this level.

Beyond the USA-32 breakup in September, LeoLabs data shows a Chinese rocket body also fragmented in late August 2026.

Additionally, a SpaceX Starlink satellite experienced a breakup event roughly four months prior to those incidents. In January 2026, a Russian satellite disintegrated, though it was located in a much higher geostationary Earth orbit.

Rising collision risks and debris counts

Experts warn that the increasing number of satellites placed in orbit elevates the risk of collisions and fragmentation events, potentially triggering cascading consequences. As more satellites break apart, additional shards accumulate, further endangering other spacecraft.

Data supports these warnings: in 2005, the European Space Agency (ESA) reported tracking about 16,000 shards in Earth's orbit. By 2026, when the agency published updated figures, it was monitoring more than 44,000 shards, representing an increase of nearly 180 percent.

Although most of these fragments are small, the high velocities at which they travel indicate they carry immense energy, capable of causing severe damage upon impact with spacecraft.

The danger extends beyond debris alone; satellites must constantly maneuver to avoid colliding with other objects, particularly as congestion in low Earth orbit intensifies.
