Trump Peppered With Questions About Russia Amid Heavy Bipartisan Criticism

President Donald Trump faced a barrage of questions about Russia outside the White House on Monday, as his administration comes under mounting bipartisan scrutiny over its dealings with Moscow.
On Friday, the president announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin had agreed to help ease U.S. diesel shortages as the ongoing war in Iran continues to drive up fuel prices for Americans. By Sunday, a bipartisan group of senators with the Senate Foreign Relations Committee had condemned the deal as running “directly counter” to the law.
Also on Sunday, Trump claimed that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an “energy ceasefire,” an announcement that appeared to catch Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky off guard. Yet, Putin subsequently launched an attack on a power plant in eastern Ukraine.
That strike prompted the first question the president fielded on his relations with Russia Monday.
“I’m not sure about that,” Trump said when asked for his reaction. “We’ll take a look, but all I know is that Zelensky and Putin have to get together and end that ridiculous war.”
The next question was on the president’s claimed ceasefire — “Both sides say they have not agreed to that,” noted a reporter.
“Well, they agreed,” Trump insisted. “You know why? Because I said, ‘You agree.’ That’s why.”
Then came another question about Russia’s apparent violation.
“Well, I’d have to look at it,” the president reiterated. “There’s been violations on both sides.”
Another reporter continued, “Zelensky says he supports your energy ceasefire, but Putin doesn’t. What’s your message to Putin?”
“I think they both support it,” Trump responded. “I think they want to make a deal, but they don’t know how. We’re gonna get ’em to make a deal.”
“We haven’t heard anything from Putin, sir,” that same reporter noted.
“Well, we’re gonna see what happens,” the president promised.
“Putin wants to make a deal more than Zelensky,” Trump even said when hit with yet another question on the subject.
