Desert Stairway to Heaven
Explanation: This stairway in Chile brings you only a little bit closer to heaven. But ooh, the sky above it makes you wonder. For example, you may wonder about the dark lane of our own Milky Way galaxy rising behind the expansive Atacama Desert in Chile, the band of zodiacal light on the upper left, the green and red airglow just above the horizon, the star Spica in the zodiacal light stripe, and, at the very top on the right, the Small Magellanic Cloud galaxy. The Desert Staircase sculpture is in the foreground, and this image was timed to catch the picturesque peering perch just in front of the near-vertical Milky Way band. Upon close inspection of the horizon you can find, left to right, some Andes Mountains, the Licancabur volcano, and the town lights of San Pedro de Atacama. The featured wide-angle composite was captured in July 2025.

What caused the lights in the sky over Indiana Tuesday morning?

Multiple people reported seeing lights over Indiana to the east, with some saying it looked like an asteroid and others saying it's a plane. Turns out it's neither.
INDIANA, USA — If you saw some strange lights in the sky this morning in Indiana, you're not alone.
Multiple people have reached out reporting similar sightings, with some guessing it's an asteroid and others wondering if it's a plane going down.
Thankfully, this object isn't on its way down — it's on its way up.
This morning, SpaceX sent its Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon spacecraft soaring into the air around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.
According to SpaceX, this launch is part of its CRS-35 mission to delivery supplies to the International Space Station (ISS).
According to NASA's mission overview, the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft is loaded with more than 6,300 pounds of supplies.
Some of those supplies include new science experiments to be conducted on the ISS.
They range from manufacturing artificial eye retinas in microgravity to studying brain organoids "to better understand inflammation linked to neurodegenerative diseases," according to NASA.
After the Dragon spacecraft arrives at the ISS, it will dock to the space-facing port of the ISS's Harmony module.
Indiana isn't the only state getting a lightshow this morning, either.
The rocket has been seen over several states in the eastern U.S., including Tennessee, where it was captured by Associated Press photographers.
"Space Jellyfish"
Some compare the phenomena to a giant space jellyfish for the round, conical plume reminiscent of a jellyfish floating through water.
So, what causes it?
According to NASA's Cecilia Chirenti, it's a trick of the light — and water vapor and carbon dioxide.
It's mainly possibly at dawn or dusk, the space agency says, and makes the exhaust, which is primarily made up of water vapor and carbon dioxide, appear as a glowing cloud.
A similar view happens with the twilight phenomenon, which can also occur during rocket launches, according to NASA.

NASA, U.S. Space Industry Leaders Gather in Vienna for Launch of $5 Million U.S. Space Initiative

VIENNA — The U.S. Mission to International Organizations in Vienna invites members of the media to attend the second annual U.S. Space Forum, October 15–16 at the Vienna International Center, where the United States will formally launch Project Constellation, a new $5 million initiative to foster partnerships with countries in space-related activities, advancing U.S. commercial and policy leadership in outer space.
The $5 million funding announcement is embargoed until the Forum opens on October 15. Press are encouraged to attend and cover the announcement made by U.S. Ambassador Wells Griffith on October 15 at 9:30 a.m. CEST.
Project Constellation will connect American companies, researchers, and space experts with international partners through commercial diplomacy, fellowships, pitch competitions, study tours, and cooperation on the safe exploration and use of space.
The U.S. Space Forum will bring together senior U.S. officials, space industry leaders, entrepreneurs, diplomats, and experts to discuss the rapidly evolving commercial and policy environment in outer space.
U.S. Ambassador to International Organizations in Vienna Wells Griffith and NASA Associate Administrator for International and Interagency Relations Kathleen Karika will deliver remarks at the Forum’s opening.
Discussions throughout the Forum will address U.S. leadership in the growing space economy, orbital safety, the Artemis Accords and lunar governance, space law, and opportunities for international cooperation with the U.S. commercial space sector.
Participants will include representatives from the Commercial Space Federation, Astroscale, Slingshot Aerospace, Amazon Leo, Meridian International Center, Axiom Space, Redwire, Stoke Space, Voyager, Firefly, ispace-U.S., Magna Petra Corp, and other leaders from the U.S. space ecosystem.
