Report: Pentagon Is Deploying 600 Troops to Latin America

The Pentagon is quietly upping its footprint in Latin America. The New York Times, citing US military officials speaking on condition of anonymity, reports that about 600 soldiers from the Army's 10th Mountain Division are being dispatched to train regional forces and bolster a widening anti-drug campaign. Troops are rotating first through a jungle training hub in Panama, then on to Colombia and Honduras, where they'll join exercises, help secure US helicopters, and stand by to assist Special Operations teams involved in raids on suspected traffickers, the officials say.
Several hundred more soldiers will join a new Western Hemisphere command in Miami, while Reaper drones recently shifted from Africa to Colombia and Ecuador, the Times reports. The ramp-up, pushed by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and backed by President Trump, alarms human rights advocates and legal experts who question the effectiveness and legality of lethal strikes on traffickers—and warn a murky mission could drag US forces deeper into the region.
Adam Isacson at the Washington Office on Latin America research group tells the Times that he can't recall a US troop deployment to the region "that ever came close to 600, except for contingencies like invasions or natural disasters." ABC News reported last fall that the US had begun sending small numbers of troops to train in Panama at a jungle training center used during the Vietnam War, when troops nicknamed it the "Green Hell."
