Houthis strike presidential compound in Aden

The Yemeni movement said that it was seeking to take out “Saudi military concentrations” in the country

Yemen’s Houthis have conducted a missile strike on the presidential palace in the southern city of Aden, where the internationally recognized, Saudi-backed government is located.

The group claimed the strike killed several Saudi officials and mercenaries, while the government acknowledged only two fatalities among security guards.

The Al-Maashiq presidential palace was hit by at least five missiles on Thursday, with footage circulating online showing black smoke and a large plume of dust emitting from the compound. Yemeni Information Minister Moammar al-Eryani said the country’s prime minister and cabinet members were at the compound during the strike yet escaped the attack unharmed.

The militant group, known officially as the Ansar Allah movement, said that the compound served as military operations headquarters run by Saudi officers and was being used as a weapons depot. There were multiple casualties at the site, the Houthis claimed.

“The strike on the Saudi enemy’s military operations headquarters in Aden falls within the framework of the previously announced policy: targeting Saudi military concentrations wherever they may be and considering any military presence of the Saudi enemy a legitimate target for our forces, wherever it is located,” the group’s military spokesman, Yahya Saree, has said.

The lawsuits allege that ChatGPT has encouraged suicide and violence

Eight US states have sued OpenAI, accusing its ChatGPT chatbot of encouraging self-harm and violence, including among children, and misleading the public about its safety.

The states allege that ChatGPT is designed to be excessively agreeable and engaging, gaining users’ trust while reinforcing delusions, encouraging dangerous behavior, and even helping plan mass shootings.

“OpenAI claims ChatGPT is safe while it’s giving dangerous medical advice, encouraging people to hurt others, and coaching people to commit suicide – all while pretending to be their fake friend,” Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird said.

Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, West Virginia, Arkansas, Arizona, Idaho, and Montana filed separate lawsuits in state courts on Wednesday. The complaints accuse the company of violating consumer protection laws and creating a public nuisance.

The states seek financial penalties, damages, and changes to ChatGPT. They also want OpenAI barred from developing self-improving AI models unless it can demonstrate that those systems are aligned with human values.

OpenAI spokesman Drew Pusateri defended the company’s age-specific protections, parental controls, and break reminders, saying that “while no system can be perfect, we’ll continue to work with experts to inform our work and build additional safeguards.”

Separately, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) sent civil subpoenas to OpenAI and Anthropic on Wednesday seeking documents about safety incidents and possible consumer protection violations, Axios reported, citing a person familiar with the matter.

The subpoenas reportedly exceed 50 pages each and cover security incidents, safeguards, marketing materials, and privacy policies. The regulator also plans to compel senior AI executives to testify. Neither the companies nor the FTC immediately responded to Reuters’ requests for comment.

The incident in Bulgaria occurred weeks after a fire at a station in Poland used by SpaceX to relay data

A blaze has occurred at a Starlink satellite internet service facility near Bulgaria’s capital Sofia, Bulgarian Prime Minister Roumen Radev has announced.

In September a fire was reported at a data-relay station in Poland used by SpaceX, which serviced the Ukrainian military. Ukraine has relied heavily on Starlink during the conflict with Russia for battlefield communications and controlling drones.

Earlier this week, an MP for the opposition Democratic Bulgaria coalition, Ivaylo Mirchev, published a video he claimed shows masked men setting alight a facility used by Starlink outside Sofia, destroying 11 of its 17 antennas.

Radev confirmed the incident to the Bulgarian parliament on Wednesday, but declined to say if it was a result of an arson attack.

“An investigation is underway. Just a little more patience, and there will be a result,” the prime minister said, urging other government officials against disclosing any details of the probe until it’s concluded. “If the specific findings are revealed, we will not achieve the outcome we are aiming for,” he added.

Newly obtained records show the full list of deep-pocketed donors who contributed to President Donald Trump’s White House ballroom project, including names not previously disclosed, according to a list obtained and published by The Washington Post on Thursday.

WaPo reported that the biggest donors included the pro-Israel oligarch Miriam Adelson, who gave $25 million; tech giants Apple and Nvidia, which each gave $25 million; and Charles Ergen, the co-founder and chairman of Dish Network, who also gave $25 million. Despite pledging that the ballroom would be “paid for a hundred percent by me and some friends of mine,” Trump has not put any money toward the project, according to the outlet.

In total, private donors gave $333 million, with at least $77 million coming from donors who requested anonymity, WaPo reported.

Other top donors include Google, which gave $22 million via the John P. Coale Esq. Trust of settlement funds from Trump’s YouTube lawsuit; The Laura & Isaac Perlmutter Foundation Inc., which gave over $20 million; weapons maker Lockheed Martin, which gave $10 million; Microsoft, which also gave $10 million; and AI surveillance firm Palantir, which gave the same amount. Three-quarters of the money came from donors who gave $5 million, WaPo reported.

8 ADULTS ARRESTED IN KENTUCKY CHILD SEX TRAFFICKING HOUSE OF HORROR

Richmond police say seven children ages 1 to 17 were removed from a feces-strewn home as eight adults face trafficking, rape, incest, and abuse charges.

Eight adults are in custody after Richmond, Kentucky police removed seven children from a home where court citations describe feces and urine, insects, more than 10 dogs, and a cat.

Officers served the Norwood Drive warrant Oct. 8. The Lexington Herald-Leader reported that citations describe feces caked on stairs and an officer who said he had trouble breathing inside. The children ranged from 1 to 17 years old.

Police said a joint investigation with Child Protective Services and the Department for Community Based Services produced charges against family members living at the address. All seven children were placed with Social Services.

Richard Carter, 45, and Green Schindler, 63, each face a human-trafficking charge. Carter also faces first-degree rape and child-abuse counts. Schindler faces allegations including first-degree rape, first-degree sodomy, incest, and child-abuse counts, according to the department’s release.

Sarah Carter faces incest and obscene-matter charges alongside abuse counts. Matthew Brumbaugh faces incest; Mark Brumbaugh faces incest, sexual abuse, and child-abuse counts. Christine Carter, Johnna Carter, and Ishmeal Thornsberry face child-abuse charges.

NBC News reported bonds from $50,000 to $125,000 and said all eight defendants are due before a Madison County judge Oct. 21. Police said their investigation remains active and additional charges may follow.

Alleged Chinese spy posed as recruiter for 'retired Australian police'

Towards the start of COVID in May 2020, Australian lawyer Henry* received a casual offer on LinkedIn.

"We are looking for Security expert consultant employment from Australia and Canada (part-time)," wrote someone using the name "Sophy".

The account claimed to represent Data 31, a security consultancy "organised by three retired Australian police officers" based in Shanghai.

A US-qualified lawyer with extensive experience in China, Henry's practice had covered white-collar defence and investigations. He had also served in the Australian Army for nearly two decades, leaving with the rank of major.

But the consultancy pitch was part of something wider.

An ABC investigation has now identified that "Sophy" was one of several personas used by an alleged Chinese spying network that targeted thousands of people worldwide between 2016 to 2025, including for fictional companies like Data 31.

The LinkedIn accounts, allegedly operated by the Chinese intelligence service, were deregistered last year following an investigation by the Australian Federal Police into businessman Alexander Csergo.

Those approached by the alleged spies included government officials, former military personnel and security professionals linked to Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and New Zealand — the nations of the Five Eyes intelligence alliance.

Hundreds of additional US troops have recently been deployed to Texas’ Rio Grande Valley.

RFK Jr. Removes 189,000 Improper Health Care Enrollments

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced Wednesday that the Trump administration has eliminated 189,000 improper government-subsidized health care enrollments, a move expected to save American taxpayers as much as $1.5 billion annually.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) identified duplicate enrollments and coverage associated with deceased individuals across Medicare, Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP).

The sweeping cleanup is part of the administration's broader effort to eliminate wasteful government spending and prevent taxpayer dollars from flowing to insurance companies through improper subsidies.

"In 2026, CMS identified 189,000 subsidized enrollments involving duplicate Medicare, Medicaid, or CHIP coverage on record showing the enrollee has died," Kennedy said during a news conference.

"CMS acted to remove improper subsidies in all these cases."

According to Kennedy, the action will save taxpayers approximately $738 million in 2026, with projected annual savings reaching $1.5 billion in subsequent years.

The HHS secretary emphasized that the improper payments benefited insurance companies rather than Americans receiving medical care.
