Why SEAL Team Six Was Called "Six" When Only Two SEAL Teams Existed
In the autumn of 1980, the US Navy had exactly two SEAL teams: SEAL Team One on the West Coast and SEAL Team Two on the East Coast. Then it secretly created a third unit of about ninety hand-picked men, built to fight terrorists anywhere in the world. The man who built it did not call it SEAL Team Three. He called it SEAL Team Six.
This is the story behind the name: the Iran hostage crisis and the disaster at Desert One, Richard Marcinko and the Cold War bluff aimed at Soviet intelligence, the unit's brutal first years at Dam Neck, the drowning of four SEALs off Grenada, the armed standoff with Italian troops at Sigonella after the Achille Lauro hijacking, Red Cell and Marcinko's fall, the birth of DEVGRU, and the missions that made the name famous, from Takur Ghar and the Maersk Alabama to Abbottabad, Extortion 17 and the rescue of Philip Walton.
