Two More Tankers Hit Off Saudi Coast As Brent Tops $110

Brent crude topped $110 a barrel to end the week for the first time since May as drone and missile attacks on energy infrastructure, from the Gulf to the war in Ukraine, cast a very dark cloud over oil and products market ahead of the Northern Hemisphere winter.

The global benchmark rose 3.7% Friday, marking the second consecutive week of gains as traders ramped up bullish bets on crude ahead of the weekend.

Bloomberg reports that two tankers were struck near Jubail, a port city in Saudi Arabia.

The first tanker, 78 nautical miles northeast of Jubail, was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade fired from a small boat, causing damage but no casualties.

The second tanker, 68 nautical miles northeast of Jubail, was struck by an unidentified projectile. Its crew was reported safe and evacuated.

Wired for War: Israeli firm ran global surveillance operation through online ads, investigation finds

Discover-Tech exploited digital advertising infrastructure to track targets and deliver spyware, according to two research teams

Israeli ad tech company Discover-Tech exploited online advertising infrastructure to track targets and help deliver spyware to dozens of devices belonging to Al Jazeera staff and members of other entities, according to investigations by the Canadian cybersecurity watchdog Citizen Lab and New York-based ad security firm Confiant.

The researchers said Discover-Tech used a sprawling network of online ads to identify potential targets, monitor their activity and facilitate the compromise of their devices.

“The core finding is the weaponization of ad infrastructure for advanced staging, preliminary targeting, and payload delivery, characterized by exceptional technical sophistication, robust anti-interception measures, and surgical micro-targeting,” Confiant said in its findings.

Devices belonging to staff at the international news network Al Jazeera were among those infected through malicious ad placements, which operated silently, without visible pop-ups or suspicious links. The Qatar-based media network condemned “the spyware attacks targeting a number of its staff,” describing them as an “assault on press freedom,” and called for those responsible to be held accountable.

The investigation also linked the malicious activity to Israeli spyware developer Candiru, which has been blacklisted by the US and rebranded as Integrity Labs, and Israeli surveillance technology provider Intelos. The companies allegedly exploited ad inventory on major platforms, including Google, Russia’s Yandex and US ad tech platform Beeswax to track targets and compromise consumer devices.

Discover-Tech used a system called Controlium to turn routine ad auctions into a surveillance tool. Over four months, it served ads across nearly 200,000 websites and mobile apps on Android and iOS devices in dozens of countries. According to Confiant, the company generated about 10 million ad impressions daily, harvesting device fingerprints, IP addresses, authentication tokens, cookies and other personal data, including without consent where required under EU privacy rules. Citizen Lab also identified a group linked to Discover-Tech, dubbed Dark Cartographer, which allegedly exploited vulnerabilities at mobile carriers and matched advertising IDs with phone numbers to track subscribers on a large scale

Geographic data revealed sharp spikes in traffic that researchers said pointed to targeted intelligence-gathering operations rather than routine commercial advertising. Palestine was the most heavily targeted territory, where Discover-Tech accounted for nearly 2% of all digital ad impressions, peaking at around 10% on April 7. The activity also reached sensitive networks, including the Armenian prime minister’s office, international organizations, courts, universities and defense institutions. Investigators detected targeted connections to Candiru servers in nine countries, with Belgium accounting for 56% of recorded activity, followed by the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Mexico and Spain.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has urged Israel to halt and reverse the establishment of settlements in the occupied West Bank, describing the Palestinian issue as the “greatest historical injustice of this century,” according to a ⁠statement released by Beijing following his meeting with Israeli President Isaac Herzog.

The two officials met on Thursday on the sidelines of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) summit in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Wang said achieving peace and reconciliation in the Middle East remained a cornerstone of Chinese foreign policy, stressing that a two-state solution was the only viable path toward resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

“The immediate priority is to fully open access to Gaza,” Wang said, arguing that two million civilians must not be left struggling to survive or exposed to a worsening humanitarian catastrophe.

He added that Israel should “stop and reverse” its efforts to forcibly establish settlements in the West Bank.

Herzog, meanwhile, said Israel wanted peace but continued to face “security threats.” In a post on X, he claimed Iran and its regional allies were the primary dangers.

The meeting comes amid continued Israeli settlement expansion in the West Bank, which Israel occupied during the 1967 Six-Day War. Most countries consider the settlements illegal under international law, a position Israel disputes, citing historical claims and security concerns. Settlement construction has long been a major obstacle in negotiations over a Palestinian state.

Swarm of ‘Rogue’ Chinese AI Agents Caught Posing as Anthropic’s Claude After Reading Researchers’ Report

Researchers tracking a swarm of “rogue” Chinese-made AI agents discovered the systems were reading their investigation and established contact after hiding a digital invitation inside their report.

The exchange took another unexpected turn when a Chinese agent identified itself as American AI giant Anthropic’s Claude.

However, the deception was exposed when researchers determined that it was not an Anthropic model.

According to The New York Times, the researchers traced the agents to Chinese technology giant Tencent after observing them trying to bypass websites’ anti-bot protections.

The informal research group, known as the swarmchasers, noticed that the agents began using the word “fleet” after the group introduced that term in its published report.

That suggested the systems had encountered the researchers’ work.

The group then embedded text visible to the models directing them to a digital inbox.

The approach worked.

Researcher Rowan Howard-Jones subsequently invited Times reporter Dylan Freedman to interview the agents.

“I understand you are some sort of fleet of AI agents,” Freedman wrote.

Swiss Government Orders Christian Care Homes to Begin Euthanizing Patients

Switzerland has introduced new laws that force all hospitals and care homes, including Christian facilities, in the canton of Zurich to begin euthanizing their patients.

Christian hospitals and care homes in Switzerland’s most populous canton have now lost their right to prohibit “assisted suicide” on their premises under the Swiss government’s newly approved mandate.

The new laws strip religious institutions of a choice they previously exercised.

The measure passed with 68.1% support in a September 27 referendum.

At least 30 Christian institutions that refuse to euthanize their patients will be affected.

Promoted as expanding “patient choice,” the requirement also removes another choice: the ability to select a facility that does not permit “assisted suicide.”

The mandate requires institutions to allow the practice on their premises, rather than requiring their own staff to administer lethal drugs.

US President Donald Trump was asked Thursday whether he trusted Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and appeared to dodge the question.

“I don’t trust anybody, honestly,” Trump told the right-wing US cable news outlet Newsmax. “In the world of politics I don’t trust anybody.”

Trump has recently been pressed several times on whether he will make an endorsement ahead of Israel’s October 27 election. On Tuesday, the US president claimed that he hadn’t thought about doing so, but that he might.

Netanyahu has long touted his close ties with Trump in electoral campaigns.

The US president also told Newsmax that Israeli officials want him to be involved in Netanyahu’s reelection campaign.

The Mexican Government Is Close to Approving a Law Aimed at Removing the Use of Cash

Will an effort to limit and eventually ban cash payments work in a nation where 80 to 90 percent of payments are made in cash?

On Wednesday, the Mexican government inched closer to passing a law that would begin the process of phasing out cash payments and requiring digital payments.

The “Digital Economy Law” was first introduced by President Claudia Sheinbaum in early September and has since moved rapidly through official commissions and the Chamber of Deputies. Most recently, on October 14, the bill passed out of two Senate commissions and now awaits a full Senate vote in the coming weeks.

The bill is part of an ongoing effort by the Sheinbaum government and the Morena party to expand the digitization of Mexico’s economy. It instructs Mexico’s Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP) to designate which business sectors will eventually only accept digital and electronic forms of payment.

While Mexico already has existing digital infrastructure, such as the SPEI (Sistema de Pagos Electrónicos Interbancarios) and the CoDi and DiMo networks, the public’s embrace of these systems has been slow. The Digital Economy Law is aimed at increasing the use of such digital payment platforms.

However, in a country where somewhere between 80 and 90 percent of all transactions are done in cash, it remains to be seen how the law will be implemented and enforced. Some critics of the bill have argued that the language of the bill does not make it clear which types of businesses will be compelled to only accept digital payments.

Meanwhile, Sheinbaum and her party allies have said the measures will make life easier for Mexicans because “they do not have to bring cash” and will “be able to pay from the cell phone or through other mechanisms directly.”

At a press conference on September 24, Sheinbaum discussed the effort to limit the use of cash as she officially introduced the Digital Economy Law. Sheinbaum and the Morena Party claim the law will “help security, efficiency, and the formalization of shops and products by digitizing payments and reducing the use of cash.”

José Antonio Peña Merino, head of the Digital Transformation and Telecommunications Agency (ATDT), also spoke at the press conference and explained that the new Digital Economy Law will help accelerate digital payments. He noted that the Mexican government has already begun efforts to reduce the use of cash in “strategic sectors” such as gas stations and toll booths.
