Major Canadian Military Base Hit by ‘Tragic’ Fire

An incident at a Canadian military base in Alberta on Saturday led to a fast-moving fire that left people dead and injured, although officials have not yet disclosed the number of casualties or the extent of the injuries.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said a “serious incident” had caused the fire at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Wainwright, while Alberta Premier Danielle Smith called it a “significant and tragic fire.” Canadian Defense Minister David McGuinty confirmed the tragedy in a press conference on Saturday night, in which he said the fire was the result of a base incident but did not expand on what the incident was. Numerous federal partners are working with Alberta to learn the details of what happened, McGuinty said.

“I’m saddened to share that there have been both fatalities and injuries as a result of an incident on the base,” McGuinty said.

The exact cause of the fire was not immediately known, although the blaze comes a little over a week after Alberta officials issued a high wildfire danger alert on October 5, warning that dry fuel and little rain had amplified the threat. High winds were present in the region on Saturday, contributing to the fire's spread.
